The fact that Caesar was able to invade Greece because of a calendar mistake, will always be the funniest event in this war to me

Please tell me more(i am noob in Roman history)
@johnronald97674 жыл бұрын
Joël P Caesar after he invaded Italy, was prevented from crossing into Greece. Pompey’s navy was blockading him because it was much larger, stopping Caesar from crossing. At the time sailing across the Mediterranean was dangerous so the Romans didn’t cross during parts of the year. Before the war Caesar was also elected to the position of Pontifex Maximus (high priest). One of the Pontifex’s jobs were to reset the calendar because the old Roman calendar tended to drift, and if it was not fixed summer on the calendar would drift and actually be winter in real life. The guy who was blockading Caesar believed that it was now winter based on his calendar so he pulled his ships in to harbour for the winter as it was to dangerous to sail at that time of the year. The thing was that Caesar had been at war for around 10 years at that point and hadn’t reset the calendar in that time. The calendar had drifted to an extreme amount of time. So it was actually still summer and safe to sail. Caesar realized this and crossed into Greece, completely unharmed from the blockading ships because they were in port. Caesar then defeated Pompey in battle on land and forced him out of Greece. Pompey fled to Egypt where he was executed.
