To fix unclogging is super easy and works much better than you think. Put it on the stove on high. It sounds weird, but I'm apparently it's the oils that get caught in the filter, and fire will completely unclog it. It will add a cool discoloration effect too. If you are uncomfortable with setting fire to your filter, put it in the dishwasher on high heat. It works good too, but burning off the oils with high heat makes them flow like new again

Since Aug '21 I have been using the Shengshi Pour Over Coffee Dripper - Manual Reusable Stainless Steel Cone Filter, 1-2 Cup Paperless Single Drip Brew Coffee Strainer with Double Mesh Liner Silver. Virtually the same design as the Cafellisimo Filter. $11.99. Watching various KZbin videos regarding the use of paperless cone filters I have learned to customize my coffee. I measure out 16 grams of McCafe Premium Roast Medium for a 2 Cup mug, bring the water to boiling in an Anchor Hocking microwaveable 2 Cup Measuring Cup, transfer the boiling water to a Hoafy Coffee Pot, 350 ml Stainless Steel Drip Coffee Pot Long Gooseneck Coffee Drip Kettle and pour over the grounds in a slow circular motion. A total eight minute cup of coffee. The work of cleaning out the spent grounds and subsequent washing pale next to the cost and trial and error of paper cones. I have successfully transitioned from buying 12 oz lattes at $3.50 to $4.50, plus tip, to $12.00 for 1 lb, 14 oz of ground coffee every five weeks.

You definitely have to start with the water hot hot hot...I usually bring water to a boil and then give it one minute to cool before pouring it over my coffee...I generally pour a 12oz cup which takes about 2 minutes, so it's plenty hot for me, and I add cream as well, partly to cool the coffee down for drinking, so I might be a sissy...but overall I'd say the pour over method probably isn't ideal for a "steaming hot" cup of coffee

Do you notice any appreciable difference in flavor/quality/etc. using with a paper filter vs without? They should make a larger volume version called the Cafellississimo. :-)
@ChefBuckRecipes

I don't notice a difference...sometimes I'll use the cafellissimo on a thermos and make multiple cups of coffee in one pour, but it's more time consuming and the coffee cools and needs to be reheated...lately CG has been having her own cold brew coffee in the mornings while I drink a hot cup of coffee...I find the filter ideal for 1 cup at a time

I don't buy a lot of gadgets since I usually use whatever is around, but this filter has turned out to be a pretty good buy for me. I bought a new hand blender a few weeks ago online which felt weird since I don't buy a lot of new stuff...I'm so used to going to thrift stores and hunting around for bargains, it's just fun to do, I think...but with social distancing, I've been buying more stuff online and restricting my shopping to only infrequent trips to the grocery store...we're planning some short trips around Florida, though, just for a change of scenery and to give my mother-in law a break from having to look at our faces every time she turns around. You take care as well!

Hi Chef... maybe the discoloration is just from the oils in the coffee grounds. Have you considered soaking it in a vinegar and water solution... kind of along the lines of running vinegar water through a automatic drip coffee maker. Just a thought. I've never had pour over coffee. Looks good!
@ChefBuckRecipes
@ChefBuckRecipes 4 жыл бұрын
I've never cleaned the filter with vinegar, and it still works fine for me...I do use a soapy sponge, and it's usually pretty soapy, which might not be what the manufacturer recommends, but I wash the filter in a timely fashion and rinse it well and it's holding up just fine, so I'll keep to my routine...I don't mind the discoloration around the top, but I mention it because it's the only noticeable change from when the filter was brand new...when I was researching the filter, I noticed that some folks with clogging issues had suggested a vinegar rinse, and wherever I've worked in a restaurants, there is always a regular schedule of coffee machine and coffee pot cleaning with vinegar.

I never pour the filter full to the top, so the discoloration must be from just being on its side after I wash it...it doesn't have any impact on the filter, it's really just the only noticeable difference from when I first took it out of its box

I find this filter is perfect for my morning coffee, but if CG wants a cup of coffee, too, then it's not ideal. You ever use a moka pot? I really like those, and a filter isn't required, but a stovetop burner is, so it doesn't always work for traveling

@ChefBuckRecipes
@ChefBuckRecipes 4 жыл бұрын
the grind definitely makes a difference--too fine a grind and it packs like mud and drips much slower, too course a grind and it drips too fast and doesn't impart enough flavor...coffee grinds run between the extremes of extra course and extra fine, and the ideal recommended grind for a pour over coffee is between medium and fine

@ChefBuckRecipes
@ChefBuckRecipes 4 жыл бұрын
it's definitely not easier than paper filters, since you can simply toss a used paper filter or bury them in the compost--and I'll use a paper filter in my cafellissimo if there's one around, but a paper filter does have to go in something---a fancy pour over device, maybe a simple funnel, maybe an automatic drip coffee maker....but a paperless pour over filter can be used all on its own, so it's pretty ideal for travel

Have you tried instant coffee? I'm from England but living in Chicago for 20 years now, and I can't believe the bad rap instant coffee gets. I guess it's from back in the day when coffee was dehydrated using heat, but now it's done using freeze dried method. Also a big mistake Americans make is heating water in microwave, and for some reason this makes terrible coffee and tea. I think instant coffee is the perfect travel tool - only downside is you need a way to get boiling water - we use a small travel kettle. I'd recommend Nescafe Tasters Choice French Roast to try. A heaped spoonful in boiling water and you go from there. I'd love to hear what you think! Love your vids btw :)

I like the ritual of coffee, and the taste, but what's more subjective than taste? One of the best cups off coffee I ever had in my life was a hot mug of Folgers Instant. I was backpacking through town and an old fella invited me onto his porch for a cup of coffee and I'll never forget how good it tasted, and that was decades ago. When CG and I backpacked on the Appalachian trail, we often carried instant coffee. I find instant coffee to be quite serviceable, and I don't turn my nose up if it's my best option. I bought instant coffee during our recent travels in Mexico--although I mostly didn't love it--but that can happen with any kind of coffee, it's all so subjective. But I prefer fresh ground coffee. And freshly brewed is worth the effort I think.
@5_of_776
@5_of_776 4 жыл бұрын
@@ChefBuckRecipes Very true of course, taste is subjective! On reflection, I think the instant coffee thing may be due to trying to make it with microwaved water, which somehow ruins the coffee/tea. Maybe it doesn't get hot enough? I don't know. And some instants I don't like too much either. Very one dimensional and I suspect made with cheaper beans or something. So I amend my opinion to say that SOME instants are wonderful :) But I do wish Americans would give it more of a chance. I personally love the convenience of instant.

I've been using a plastic Melitta Cone pour-over thingie for years and it works fine. I use the cheapest store-brand paper filters, just fitting a standard 1-4 cup basket type into the cone, instead of paying more for the cone-shaped ones. The Melitta Cone is inexpensive. I paid less than $5 for it 7 years ago and it hasn't gone up much in price. $5 - $7 or so depending on where you buy it. It makes a decent cup of coffee, depending on the coffee brand, roast strength, and grind size. I rinse it after each use, and give it a good thorough scrub every few months. I, too am baffled by those little Keurig cups, seeing them as just another source of plastic waste. The paper filters are biodegradable and made from a renewable material. Now get off my lawn, you lousy brats!
@ChefBuckRecipes

haha!--kids and their Keurigs!--with the rock and roll and the long hair! When we lived in Seattle I mostly made coffee with a French Press--cause it tastes great and it's easy to make 2 cups of coffee at the same time--but for those times when CG didn't want a hot coffee, I'd just make a single pour over for myself using a plain funnel and a paper filter--and that worked great
