A tip, when inserting the palette knife angle it slightly upwards to the back of your painting, and avoid touching the new sheet or it will show as a dark line when you apply a wash.

Artist for 50 yrs. here. Finally getting around to watercolor. Like you I tend to be impatient, so have always shied away. THANK YOU for these suggestions. I have found many elaborate and time-consuming ways to deal with paper warp. Some of them were kinda weird funny. The paper pad block seems to be ideal. I live in the desert, so dry times are brief out here.

What a wonderful, economical idea. Thank you so much! One tip so you don't have to be so careful if you happen to get medium or gel on the top sheet is to use washi tape around the edges--same as if you were getting ready to paint and leave a white border for framing.

I flatten my paintings by using an iron. Dampen the back, .put face down on clean paper and put a white flour sack towel on top, iron it on cotton setting. Then put heavy books on top until cooled off. Takes 20 minutes or less from start to finish.

Did try that once but someone had use a stiffening products for shirts before and I ruined my painting.

Great idea. I had thought there must be a way to turn pads into blocks, but had no idea how. So went looking, found your video which so clearly explained how and with what. Today I turned 3 pads..a cheap one, another cheaper one (so nice to paint on a flat surface) and an Arches (which I used to buy in blocks for more $ than the pads). Already have started a painting on one of the cheaper pads, which now feels more expensive. Thank you!

I finally tried converting a pad into a block.. Thanks for the tip, Eric. For comparison, an Arches rough 9x12 12-sheet pad costs $29.12 CAD at Amazon. An Arches rough 9x12 block is $66.00 CAD.

Café Watercolour.. This was a very good idea..,I'm really picky as my professio n before retirement was 50 years as "freehand pinstriping, I bring that up as reference because its impossible to gain a reputation if your work isn't as perfectly straight & uniform as humanly possible. Your reasoning on this area of wrinkled paper is very good. How I now keep my artistic interests alive now #1 graphite portraits, ...& #2 b I love the "light" quality it watercolour which may be the most difficult to get good at. I also have experimented with thinning acrylic paints and use in the glaze technique. But I absolutely cannot stand spending hours/days on a water based painting and see all the wavy warping. As a retired man I don't have a budget to buy the best quality materials, but life has taught me that with some forethought...one can have reasonably great results by finding persons as yourself to learn the "ropes" I have an old sketch pad I rarely use, but maybe only 90lb wt. My regular pads are 140lb Strathmore & Canson Creme. I subscribed to you as I rarely subscribe but you seem very serious minded no cute chatter. 👍 Paolo
