Guild wars 1 got me closer to my brother. We never got along or did anything. But then I got guild wars for Christmas and after showing him the game he bought it the next day. That was 2008, now in 2023 we play guild wars 2 every week and we are in our 30's.

This is me but with my father. He got it for me for christmas, within a month he got his own copy, and my uncle got his own copy haha. We played for years and years straight every day, and eventually GW2, which we dont any more (my uncle still plays though). Created a full guild, my dad created a forum/website and everything for it lol. Was great times. I know I will remember that forever and I'm sure they will too. Funnily enough regarding the same age comment, I was in elementary school at the time. I was the leader of the guild/alliance, our guild was always around maximally full so it was pretty large, and we all played together for years so we were close. I was decently composed even being that young so I am pretty sure many assumed I was an adult until I mentioned I broke my wrist "at lunch" (on the playground) . I remember at that very moment based on the responses, my cover was blown LOL

I’m old and was about 21 when the original guild wars came out. I played it quite hardcore. I remember farming the fissure of woe and the underworld with my friends to get the obsidian armor. The actual guild vs guild PvP and the alliance battles. The insanely epic thunderhead keep mission. Dealing with the mursaat and going through the path of ascendancy. Guild wars was a masterpiece of a game. And I was initially excited when they announced GW2 but that excitement wore off quickly when I realized it wasn’t really even the same kinda game. I resisted buying it but eventually broke down and started playing. I’ve had fun with GW2 off and on over the past 10 years, but I don’t think anything will ever top the original game.

Early in our marriage, playing GW1 was date night for us. We couldn't afford a babysitter for our 3 little ones at that time. GW1 was the substitue to a dinner, movie and sitter fees. There are so many fond memories of that time and it was a great time meating some wonderful people in game via TeamSpeak. I moved on to GW2 years later but hubby could not be bothered (maybe when he retires in a few years we can play together again (🤞🏼)) I'm now working on my college aged children to pick up the game...

I 100% AGREE, i quit gw2 2 or 3years ago after no updates for WvW.even though they promised gw2 was about WvW.. Gw1 was an experience I would honestly die for to relive again. The low level PVP the expansions. the high level pvp, the G'v'Gs, the exploration aspects, the feeling of action mmorpg DnD to MMO feelings, the personalization of building your own guild which people would join by recruiting for your guild. I ran a successful Kurzick guild and kurzick allliance #2 at the time for Ab'ing and faction which i was the leader of being only 15 years old at the time. The fantization of building unique builds that were not used by anyone else in low level arenas with lower HP and using a sword instead of a bow as a ranger, the secrets of getting a pet lv 20 when you are only lv 7 the secrets of speed running areas to get ahead in the game without doing story...the progression of paying people to run you to a city far far far away when you could scam them at any moment all existed years ago.

The thing I remember the most was hanging out with my guild-mates, not even so much actually playing the game. This was a group of people I spent 4-6 hrs per day for 5 years with....I hope they are all doing good and look back on their time with this game as fondly as I do. I just logged back in after years and oh boy it was one of the most pleasant trips down memory lane i had From the music to the zones and my good ol cringy ass nicknames. I'm 30 now but i played the game when i was like 13 ? Like you i never really got to experience like hardcore endgame content but i remember managing to finish the main story of prophecy after GW:EN released lmao, so like 5years after i started playing the game ? Like you said, it was mainly fooling around with people, exploring, doing random quests, helping people, getting helped... Such a good times... I also felt very old when i saw that my account was 220month old so basically more than 18years old, could you imagine ? My trusty Warrior was still there, him and his dragon fiery sword i worked so hard to get because i saw the king early in the game wearing one... Truly GW:1 is a masterpiece. It deserves a remake of it graphics and textures without touching the original game, it's one of a kind. Not a single MMO out there is close to being like GW:1 it's truly an original style and no other MMO ever tried to do another GW-like game. I remember having so much fun in pvp, spending hours in random arenas, i wished there was enough people in the game to play arenas again but unfortunately nobody plays the game anymore :( Only afk stragglers or bots

I missed Guild Wars the first time around - was playing WoW and Eve Online back in 2004-2006 - but the fiance and me played through the entirety of GW1 last year as a prelude to playing GW2 properly... glad we did. It's amazing how well it holds up, but it's also frustrating how many excellent ideas from the original were abandoned in the sequel. Like, as much as I enjoy the ridiculous 10 FPS meta event bosses with hordes of players in GW2, I find myself constantly thinking "This zone is cool; imagine how much cooler it would have been as an instanced mission environment with an actual challenge, and henchmen/heroes to make up the party gaps." And damn, the sense of journey! We literally took our characters from Ascalon pre-searing, right through to Eye of The North, and when you actually look at how the game's story leads you across the massive world map, and how you make friends along the way, and then move on, and discover new things... by the time you cross the deserts riding giant sand worms and reach the demonic hellscape of Abaddon's realm, it really hits you; that you've been on an epic adventure. As much as I love GW2, reaching the end of the core campaign in that one simply didn't hit the same note. Instead of me and the fiance being heralded as the heroes, we had... uh, Destiny's Edge inexplicably showing up to do a slow hero walk despite having done literally nothing whatsoever to assist in the defeat of Zhaitan except talk about themselves a lot then get on an airship.

One of the things I remember most was trying to get the Hall of Monuments completed. That includes wall hugging so you could complete maps when you could potentially miss a pixel. Okay, not quite that bad but frustrating at times. Although 2D it gave the great impression of being 3D having to go up and down hills. Seeing parts of GW1 in GW2 even if now underwater...

I believe the game is still fun to play today, and when that music start's in Prophecies it always brings a tear and a happy feeling of home. Thank you for uploading any GW1 content, it is great to remember those times with fans as nostalgic as myself :)

Guild Wars was my very first MMORPG I ever played. I was a beta tester back when they would released the beta test game at the start of every month. This game was (and is still) amazing. I still have very fond memories of my guild and doing GvG, which was an amazing aspect of the game. My guild is still intact, though empty, within GWs. I have one huge pet peeve is when folks refer to the ORIGINAL Guild Wars as 'Guild Wars 1'...grrrr! I'm now 59, still play pc games, but rarely dip into GWs. I tried Guild Wars 2, but it didn't win me over and left me feeling hollow. I would go back into Guild wars, but I find it just makes me sad, as it reminds me of all the friends and amazing players I once knew and are now no more. Although, I will say, it still makes me chuckle when I think back to when the 'flame wars' erupted on forums between WoW player fanbois and GWs fanbois - Guild Wars was the new kid on the block and a potential threat to WoW. The player rivalry between the two camps was massive, and each side looked for every and any opportunity to flame the other. Some were just plain nasty, but for the majority it was good humoured, often hilarious and would have me near to tears with laughter. I was privileged to witness an ANet moderator appear in game with their avatar and drop the 'ban hammer' on a player. The chat window went into melt down, and it was so funny. I also had the honour of chatting with Gaile Grey in game as she appeared in character. The other thing I loved about Guld wars was the Holy Trinity of Healer, Support and Warrior - epic and so much fun in GvG. What I admired about GvG was the fact that lower ranked Guilds got to play on home territory, so if you and your team appeared in a strange guild setting, you knew you were a higher ranked guild. Brilliant. Doing map runs for newbie players was an amazing, fun and warming aspect of the game. We did this for free, some players would charge gold, but to be honest, we ( I ) found it the best way to make new friends and potential new guild recruits. There was next-to-no voice comms back then, so every interaction was typed, and some of it was hilarious, and sometimes heart warming. Guild wars had a real sense of community back in the day on release - yes, we had some 'odd' people cruising the guilds to see what they could get for free then vanish, or just be there to troll everyone - but for the majority, it was a fantastic time and experience. I have dipped in just to reminisce and take my characters for a walk or two. European servers are (or were last time I saw, and forgive me if they have since been shut down) a ghost town, so I shifted to US as everyone seemed to be there who still played the game - but no one I knew. To any and all former and current players and devotees of the original, and best, Guild Wars game. I love and respect you all and you all hold a special place in my heart for keeping this beautiful and amazing game alive. Maybe I'll see you in game sometime.

My guild was one of the first of the alpha guilds. What a lot of people don't realize/remember was that AN was such a young company that the volunteer alpha testers were just that: volunteer alpha testers. We were also permitted to report back to our guilds the kinds of developments we saw, etc. A couple of months prior to release, the company decided that they wanted the finished game to be a surprise, so we were informed we were no longer able to give those reports. Testing for Factions, Nightfall, and Eye of the North were under much stricter NDAs. I have to say that testing that game was a consistent high point in my gaming experiences.

@@CaffeinatedDad If I recall, you have to equip a "Signet of Capture" in your skill bar when going into an instance where you're trying to capture an "Elite" skill (Any skill trainer from Lion's Arch on should sell them). After defeating the shiny boss, you use it to copy his skill, which replaces the signet on the bar. If you're playing as a Warrior/Monk you'll only be able to take warrior or monk skills. If you're a Necro/Mesmer, you'll only be able to copy those skills. Also, the bosses are color-coded. Near as I remember, Warriors are yellow, Necros are green, Rangers lighter green, Elementalists red, Mesmers purple and so on...

I started playing shortly before Factions was released and the time until Eye Of The North was truly magic. It was my first and only MMORPG I played more than one month (even GW2 bored me after a short time because it felt like a WOW copy) and I never experienced something better in this genre. You could start casual and then become very ambitious in PVE and PVP with time. The 8 skill limitation was ingenious and even though meta builds took over after a few years it was still a wild ride in the first few years when nobody knew how to properly play his class and ArenaNet introduced new content and skills all the time. Unfortunately when people started to cry that GW is dead half a year after EOTN was released ... well ... they kind of were right. Damn, I really miss this time. My guild was like my second family for many years. We were bonded by the love for this unique and special game. Antworten

there are two things from GW that i really really miss in GW2: 1st The absolute freedom of choosing skills for my own build. And 2nd the instanced stances, loved to have the whole maps just for myself! (oh yeah, i still play GW from time to time, I even got a permanent pre-searing just to enjoy that unique landscape) My main the still IS r/mo, second is N/M and my pre searing is still pure Ranger. Was I the only one who actually loved the henchies? Another thing missing in GW2... AND don't forget the ascention! Ohhh man, i remember the literal terror it caused on most players, lol GW greatest challenge: Run Lornar's Pass with just about any character, not the "meta" for it, and yes, i've done it with all base classes, some were a real pain "you know where" put it can be done!

These maps start at lvl 15 but are so difficult that the devs deliberately allowed players to use this route to skip 90% story mode because they knew that no one would do it due to the difficulty level. Times when you have hidden difficult options that reward your determination unheard of in current games

@@IvorLongarrow It _could_ be shut down in the future - Though Anet has assured they have no intention of doing so (And I believe them. I've been playing GW1 and GW2 for about 15 years). However, any future is uncertain and Anet could cease to exist at some point, regardless of their intentions. Thing is that with Henchmen, Heroes and the reduced player population playing solo is pretty common - And the game is still good that way. The fact is that I still play _Phantasy Star Online_ offline, and it's still enjoyable. GW1 would be too. Got GW1 because I didn't want to pay per month for WoW. Played it a good 400 hours or so and did everything there is to do. Top memories: soloing the outside the wall mission pre-searing with my summoner necro (before that got nerfed) and just holding out against the army until time ran out. Running around the open world solo collecting elite skills (gotta catch em all!). Soloing FoW and UW for shards and ecto to get my edgy spikey outfits. Running people through some of the tougher missions which could actually be soloed with the right build and skill (again, minion necro pre nerf). Spending hundreds of hours trying different builds to see which missions and areas I could solo with them. Factions was alright, I enjoyed the assassin and some of the new skills. I don't think another game has ever gotten close for me.

Before playing GW I really never got interested because it's instanced, I thought it would not feel a MMO. But after playing I realized it was totally the opposite, it was one of the best features of the game, that made possible making every game zone challenging, and you always had people grouping with you to play along. I don't know why any other MMO was made this way after GW.

I played both of them. I picked up Guild Wars in 2006 at a videogame store (doesnt exist anymore) when factions came out. It was the first "MMO" where you could enjoy the cool aspects of a MMO without having to pay every month. Theres no other game like it. Anet did a stunning job with Guild Wars 2 as well. That game was a black hole in my life... But its a completely different game, they might as well changed the title. It looks like guild wars(shout out to Daniel Dociu), it sounds like guild wars(shout out to Jeremy Soule) but doesnt feel like it at all. They pretty much replaced all the core game mechanics with something entirely new. This is a big part to GW2 being a much larger commercial succes, it became an instant classic and overshadowed GW1 so I guess Anet did a good job all things considered... To this day I do miss the skills/trait system of gw1 in gw2 and it makes you wonder what could have been. Your first MMO will always hold a special place in your heart.

I like gw2, haven't played gw1 in a while, but I wish they didn't strip back the skills so much, there were so many, you could mix and match so much more, it would be awesome if you could slowly unlock them in the massive new open world, probably a headache for balancing, but the variety was unmatched. The class fusion is also a gimmick I wish I saw more in games, it was great.

None of them was save from my junk, poor sods... 8:55 --- What I loved about GW's quests was that the zones outside the outposts and cities changed depending on you quests. In Factions, in Kaineng City, there was a quest, that no sane person would ever finish, except maybe if he was completionist: this quest made you friends with one of the maffia groups there and all mobs were friendly for the duration of that quest. You just never finished it and that zone, usually hard to travers, was then a breeze :D Many quests also chained into each other, expanding the story with new features you wouldnt otherwise have discovered.
