This has been quite interesting for me as a burned out GW2 vet who recently picked up ESO and found it a fesh and exciting wonderland to explore and i feel similarly to a lot of the things you described. Rather than about the respective games, maybe it's more about the difference between trying a new game that has had years of updates and refinement, where you don't know the meta and it's still full of possibilities vs a game you've been playing for a while and exhausted, always catching up with new updates as soon as they drop.
@gg05irgm Жыл бұрын
This is the real answer GW2 has similar downfalls when you figure it all out as well and actually theres not really anything to do but farm for armor skins a lot of it can be done much more effectively working a job and buying gold through the store. Endgame lacking a lot and going somewhat stale. My biggest gripe however is that none of the chars are really satisfying everything thats powerful and strong is taken down or made annoying or complex. When classic wow came out it was such a realization to me that you dont need to butcher everything, its about all classes being given unique powers. In vanilla wow i felt so damn overpowered in my own way no matter what class i played i felt i had tools that felt like cheating! But in the end even feeling like that i wasnt overpowered and vanilla wow was the game where the player power is clearly lowest and yet it made me feel that way! a true lesson because i wanted to feel class identity and strong powers and not to have everything made a pale almost average ability.
@gewreid5946 Жыл бұрын
@@gg05irgm I feel like devs are removing complexity and excessively streamlining things rather than making things complex. But i definitely agree that ANet is valuing balance and all classes being equal for "competitive PvE" at the detriment of uniqueness, flavor and FUN. In that context it's kinda weird though that of all MMOs i went to ESO, where each class can fulfill each role and has their skill lines optimized for that as well as shared skills that can be used by every class. And often are overtuned compared to class abilities. Dawnbreaker of f***ing Smiting lol

Guild Wars 2 does have it's flaws. I won't get into the details because what I consider flaw might not be a flaw to you. What I will do is suggest that you give it a try. It's a free download and you can play for free to your heart's content. Trying it won't cost you a dime. If you do enjoy it, then you can buy the expansions (I suggest you wait until the go on sale, it's so much cheaper) to open up more zones / regions, get access to mounts and so much more. Having a friend already in game is a bonus because they can show you the ropes and, in my opinion, it's always better to play with a friend. So, yeah, try it. With this video, you have helped me put in the words and the concept of 'having fun without hassle', which is in fact, the core concept of playing a game, minus away all the troublesome part of management, pressure, and hectic busy works. A game that allows player to have fun instantaneously, anywhere, without the need to endlessly grind, prep, and team up. A game that we can just, pick up, have fun, and say hi to the stranger we meet along the way, go to sleep, head to work, and do it again. The correct definition of playing a game.

Exactly. There's no stress. There's no grinding to end game or grinding to support end game. GW2 is very much an 'at your own pace', do what YOU want to do (as opposed to what the devs want you to do) type of game. ArenaNet got it right. You should be able to PLAY the game, not work at it. When you start looking at it as a chore, it's no longer a game.

A tip for ascended Viper gear (or any ascended armor/weapon actually). 1) Unlock the ability to craft the exotic version of the relevant insignia/inscription for the stats type you want. (In the case of Vipers, you just buy the recipes from one of the Aurillium vendors in Auric Basin) 2) Either craft the current cheapest ascended gear by materials cost for your weight class, or you can drop/earn ascended armor/weapon boxes in a variety of places like Fractals, certain world bosses, Strike Missions, Raids. Strike Missions are probably the most chill way to make consistent progress towards gear boxes from the relevant vendor. You can skip doing the hardest ones. As a plus you can specifically select the armor/weapon box that contains the stat type you want. (note if you have any Seasons 3, 4, 5 of the Living Story you also have a large range of content where you can gather/earn map currencies and trade them for stat-selectable ascended rings/trinkets/backpacks, and in the case of Bitterfrost Frontier an ascended rebreather/underwater headgear). 3) For any ascended armor/weapon pieces you have that don't have the stats you want (e.g you got a box drop that didn't have the right stat type, or you did as above and crafted the cheapest possible ascended gear) Just throw said item + 5 Globs of Ectoplasm + 1 Anthology of Heroes (from the mystic forge attendant for 10 spirit shards) + the exotic insignia/inscription you unlocked earlier and can craft, into the Mystic Forge and it will spit out a new ascended piece with the stats of the insignia on it (Do remember to remove all infusions from the item first if you have any slotted, or you will lose them). My last tip would be a general one, and that is that for the vast majority of GW2 content, you do NOT need ascended/legendary gear. Exotic gear is cheap by comparison even for certain crafted stat types, readily available from a mass of sources, and ascended/legendary is only 5% more stat points than it. Only high tier fractals requires you to have a bunch of ascended gear, and that's only so you can slot agony resistance into it. Everywhere else your own personal skill with your character will often be the biggest determining factor on your effectiveness in combat, not whether you're in exotic or ascended gear :)

@Royal.Grand.Majesty Жыл бұрын
I've played almost every mmo under the sun. There are many games that implement systems to force players into daily chores, never-ending gear treadmills and constant "Forced Balancing" to promote alt creation. Guild Wars 2 respects your time with it's horizontal gearing systems. You can leave the game for a while and return and your items will still be relevant. The community is very helpful and communicative. There are players that have open groups on LFG allowing players to join and teleport to them bypassing difficult jumping puzzles. You can find many mesmer players helping new players with their portal to reach difficult locations when they don't have access to mounts yet. It's also the only mmo where I truly feel that every map is alive with something going on at all times of the day and unlike majority of other mmos where it's just a means of levelling and never returning. Some large maps are so big and structured to have multiple levels, you can sometimes find your-self lost and needing to way-point back if you don't have a skyscale or griffon mount. Also this is the only game where mounts are more than a means of transportation and a necessity to completing some activities such as springer ground-pound ability for some heart activities or reaching other-wise unreachable restricted areas, such as the Jackal portals and roller-beetle breakable doors or just traversing dangerous terrain such as using a skimmer to float over quick-sand. With the implementation of fishing in the latest expansion, players are now given a semi-afk low-intensity gold farming method for those that wish to multi-task other things. All achievements, fashion, mounts and mastery levels are account bound making alts much less of a chore. There are races which involve mounts of all types such as very fast drifting style racing with roller beetles, races with elevation with springer, underwater ones with skimmer, super-speed flying with griffon and many more. There's so many hidden areas all over the game some you will find, how-ever most you will most likely miss unless you have a keen eye and spend time exploring. The variety of activities that you do while levelling is diverse and unique from anything else I've played. Gone are the days of kill x amount of this or fetch x amount of these. The large-scale events in this game, are truly 'Large-Scale'. Make sure to adjust your graphics settings accordingly because meta-events with full maps can get quite hectic. Fractals [GW2 Mythic Dungeons] implements many other activities which require thinking and not just killing mobs, such as unlocking locked doors, dodging traps and jumping puzzles to list a few. World vs World is the closest i've felt in an mmo to being in an actual large-scale war, you need to experience it to believe it. PvP has it's ups and downs with constant balancing, but the great thing about PvP in GW2 is that you just need to complete the tutorial and you can start pvping straight away, you will be scaled to max level and all gear is equalized. Raids and Dungeons are what you would expect from any typical mmo how-ever arena-net seems to have more focus towards other game-modes such as Strike-Missions and WvW at the moment. Dungeons in GW2 are unique in a way that you can choose [vote for] multiple routes to complete the dungeons leading to different paths within the dungeon and culminating in a different boss fight at the end. Strike Missions have been added recently and are basically Raids without the Mobs, basically boss-rush mode for players who a searching for difficult pve content but are short on time. Every year there are festivals for every season that introduce even more large events and group social activities which players can participate in to earn unique rewards and fashion unlocks. The mastery system in GW2 doesn't increase player power but rather quality of life improvements and accessibility of certain systems. Fashion in GW2 is very diverse, I've seen almost perfect imitations of super-heroes, real life celebrities, cartoon characters, characters from other games and so many weird and wonderful looks. You can also dye your mounts to match your fashion as-well, leading to some epic looks while mounted. With infusions you can modify your looks even further and create effects which complement your fashion. You can be as dark as night itself or a walking disco-ball, most people tend to not go to those extremes but I have seen some looks that I can never forget. GW2 is known in the mmo community as the game that does everything different, sometimes something different is what you need.

ESO now kinda has this system in the green champion point constellation, but it’s not nearly as fleshed out as the system in GW2.

Very much agree with all of this. I had a similar journey that ended in finally trying out GW2 just six months ago. It is such a fun, dynamic, and varied game. My wife found out she loved to fish, my son does pvp 24/7, and I play with them or do the meta grind depending on my mood. So much stuff to do, and jumping into and out of groups and conversations while doing so never seems like the chore that it did in every other MMO I have played before this. Also, aside from pvp tryhards, the community is heads and tails more civilized and accepting than anywhere else. The fact that LI builds are common conversations in map chat is a testament to that.

The cooperative nature of the community, the liveliness and events of zones, the story hell EVERYTHING. It felt like what a true MMO should set out to be. Base game is a bit nondescript at the beginning, especially if you play a human as they have the most basic/vanilla starting zones. And since the game locks you out of the main story until you hit level 10, it can seem a little confusing to know what to do or where to go before then. Give it some time though and it might just grow on you!

Great video! Can’t wait for more content! I myself have tried most of the main mmorpg’s, I tried elder scrolls online earlier and then again revisited it after EOD. I enjoyed many things about it, but I found as I got further into the game itself it really started showing a lot of negative qualities amongst it’s good qualities. My brother, his girlfriend and I were all playing and we ventured off into PVP and we had a lot of fun until the Lycan’s started running us over that is. Never got to trials, ran lots of dungeons but besides that just PVP. As for GW2 the new end-game content is strike missions, think raid boss encounters but just the boss itself. Harvest temple challenge mode lasted almost a week before the first team cleared it when it was originally released but that being said the original versions of all the strikes are very accessible once you get ice brood saga, and EOD. As for your ascended vipers gear, you have a chance at getting ascended gear when running fractals usually in the form of damage, defensive and healers. You can craft a cheaper recipe (grandmaster marks) and use fractal currency to buy vipers gear as well. Lastly, you can do icebrood saga strike missions and buy ascended gear as well or raid and do the same. Also, wanted to point out as we are awaiting announcements for the next content from GW2 but usually in the past with living world seasons when they come out if you log in you’ll receive them for free so ensure you log in during the time period that they release in. :) Cheers!

Dude, your talk about ESO was so relatable for me. I remember starting back in 2018 on the Xbox EU Server and completing vMoL at CP 500 or getting all the skins and personalities available in each DLC dungeon. I also remember doing trials like a madman but after getting stuff like TTT or Immortal Redeemer and even Gryphonheart. I remember sitting 2 hours in my room parsing and improving my numbers wasting dozens of pots. I even started going for serious scores with my mates or by myself. I probably ran vMA like 300 times and it never got boring, despite it seeming like a waste of time. I still had fun however, even in hindsight. And while I don't know what caused it exactly, ESO became extremely repetitive and stale and even worse in a lot of regards for me. Dungeon mechanics got less creative, raids were less exciting and the abysmal performance on Xbox One didn't help me either. GW2 seriously impressed me, because there is just so much different content and I never really felt forced to do anything I didn't want to do at that moment.
@Coniff Жыл бұрын
I never made it as far as you did in the trial area (I did complete all the DLC trials on vet though), as arenas and dungeons were my jam. I definitely had fun, but I realized at some point last summer that I was literally just logging in to go to like 3 different places: The town where I had a guild trader in, my house for DPS parsing, and whatever dungeon or trial I was doing. lol

I started ESO in 2016 on Xbox, Moved to pc in 2017. In total I have 4200+ hours into the game. My main gripe has always been the amount of money I end up sinking into just getting ESO+. The games always labelled as a "Buy Once, Play forever!" kind of game, but your stuck into buying ESO+ for dungeon dlcs and zones and the craft bag, then stuck in a corner to buy the latest chapter because of the overwhelming power creep which ends up occurring after every single update. But I loved the Morrowind DLC, I mained the warden up until now. But it's just brutal. LFG system doesn't exist. Then a lot of toxicity in end game pve, which has just pushed me away even more. In 2020 I made my first GW2 Ranger, and since then I've stuck 2400 hours into the game. Crafting legendaries, doing strikes and fractals, it just feels amazing. Not to mention how amazing the metas are. It feels more fun to do dailies rather than a chore. I'll still never get over ESO's visual ambience, the music, the zone designs and so on. Just the look and feel has been engrained on my soul forever. Zo$ needs to update the game in a way to satisfy the players, not just updating the crown store.

Im glad I found this video. I played GW2 for 5+ years, burned out to black toast. Went to many others, from korean grinder mmos like BDO to story focused mmos like SWTOR, to even RS3 like you said. The whole bossing, optimising etc. I have finally settled on FF14. The reason I bring this up is because I think in this generation of gaming; the problem isn't that gaming isn't fun anymore, it's that we choose to make it not fun, when we should treat it like you said: a hobby. It took me awhile to figure out, games have issues sure, but if the issue is you cant find a game you enjoy, maybe overlook the flaws and just be there for the journey. Im an extroverted introvert; so when Im tired from socializing/work IRL, gaming helps me wind down and relax. TLDR: If you dont enjoy it anymore, dont force it, and if you dont enjoy gaming anymore, you dont have to stick to one. Just have fun and take care of yourself. Thanks for listening to my ted talk. One thing you may have missed is that there is no gear grind in GW2. Ascended gear was the only time a new tier of equipment was introduced, and that was 3 months after the game launched. The level cap has also never increased. Combined, these mean that if you're getting burned out, you can just take a break and come back later without worrying about falling behind. Also, Legendary equipment is statistically identical to Ascended, so that grind is purely optional if you want Best In Slot gear.

Just a heads up: ascended gear has the same stats as legendary and you don't have to craft it. Strike missions (the content you skipped over) aka mini raids, has vendors tied to them that sell stat selectable ascended gear. 12 strikes total btw. Ascended/legendary is only 5-10% better than exotic and only necessary for fractals because of agony.
@Coniff Жыл бұрын
I’m working through the story in order which is why I haven’t gotten to strikes yet, definitely excited to get there though as the idea of mini raids basically fixes my problem with the time commitment of trials in ESO.
@dragonheart9965 Жыл бұрын
And if you do decide to craft ascened vipers, what you are looking for is the ascended prefix 'yassith'. I beleive you get the recipes for it from the exalted vendor near the center of the auric basin map. The vendor should also sell the exotic inscription/insignia recipes for vipers if you decide to stat change other ascended peices.
@dragonheart9965 Жыл бұрын
Also, in terms of raiding, a two hour block once a week is a decent expectation for learning the fights without an insane commitment, although it may take a month or two to get your first clear. Once you know the fights, a moderately experienced group can generally clear a full wing (3-4 bosses) in one hour, and a practiced static can get below 30 minutes. (The enrage timer on most fights is between 7 and 10 minutes iirc)

A problem a lot of us MMO addicts have is, after so long of enduring the grind and playing like a second job, we end up believing everyone else should go through the same struggles to enjoy endgame and have a constant feeling of the need to mindlessly grind to be "raid ready". GW2 being so fundamentally different with it's horizontal progression, completely goes against this mindset, which most MMO players simply find it impossible to break the programming we've been fed for so very long, we've become obsessed with the vertical progression of constantly chasing better gear for progression. There is so much more to MMOs than grinding and GW2 proves that more than any other.

I always loved GW2, your video makes me want to play it again. I loved the fact that exploration gave you quests to do, not the other way around.

Why I left one mid game to play another mid game lol

20:35, that bit there sounds like the exiting words of that Riddle KZbinr, and I mean that in a good way. Great video. I'm still trying to figure out which I prefer.

@@meadowdear Numbers don't lie - but getting into an MMO with a friend that knows how to be a good tutorial is a great start.

To be fair, GW2 pvp is tragically bad, mainly because the devs don't care about it at all. It is so bad the entire GW2 pvp esports scene collapsed. All of the pro players quit since they hated the pvp in the game that much and the fact the devs didn't care about balance. Fractals are ok now (trash for a long time), but strikes are a joke because of how easy they are, and real raids are just painful to get a group unless you are in a raiding guild. WvW is just terrible and always will be in every game that has it. But the questing, leveling and open world stuff is probably the best of any MMO.

I disagree. I like WvW. I'm a PVE player so no idea about PVP.

I liked WvW compared to Cyrodiil because WvW has several reward tracks and abilities (like the warclaw) to work towards. The gameplay is largely the same: zergs win. But I’ve enjoyed my experience in it so far! I’m also an elementalist so I’m used to being on the ground 😁
