Something I've noticed as a habitual coffee drinker is that there is a PROFOUND difference in how coffee affects me depending on what I do after I drink it. If after drinking coffee I get up, start moving, start exercising and getting my heart pumping, coffee is like a legit mood-boosting superfood. It helps fight my depression and gives me greater clarity of mind in ways that normal exercise without coffee just doesn't. BUT if after drinking a cup I remain sedentary, it gives me anxiety and brain fog or just makes me feel more distractible, like my mind is racing around trying to latch onto something to focus on. So I always try to do something physical after drinking my coffee, even if it's just going for a walk or doing some push-ups or weight lifting. If I don't do any physical activity then it's like the coffee turns on me and makes everything inside my body run at redline instead.

A colleague of mine swore up and down he was addicted to caffeine. He'd talk about it non stop. Counting the days without it and reporting withdrawal symptoms evem after 3 weeks because of the half life. He'd gone 3 months without it and then drank a soda and started flipping out, getting shakey, talking about how he could feel the caffeine in his system. Fretting that hed undone his progress. We let him go on like that for about 3 hours. Then we told him it was Sprite. Sprite doesn't have caffeine. He hasn't said a peep about caffeine addiction since.

Coffee drinkers definitely do not add salt for effects on hydration. The filter brewing process does take some minerals out of the coffee, _yes_ but sodium has an interesting effect on bitterness; a very low concentration of salt dilute in water, then delivered as very few drops at a time is enough for a _drastic_ effect on flavour, by making it less bitter. It's basically a sweetness booster and it's _very_ cheap to incorporate saline solution in coffee for enhancing its flavour profile. We're not eve talking about a grain of salt. We're talking about _molecules._ A few grains of salt divided by one-hundred and fifty. It's that potent.

To answer your questions at the end, I don't like coffee. I occasionally drink tea with milk, but mostly I take ZipFizz (one in the morning, one in the afternoon for 100mg caffeine each). I've tried to like coffee but just couldn't. Caffeine seems to help the intensity of the stress response I have to excessive noise, visual chaos, and other stressors (I'm mildly autistic). Thanks for pointing out that caffeine doesn't give energy, it just suppresses tired. It makes me sleepy though (I'm also a bit ADHD).

But in general I wake up every day feeling absolutely refreshed and alert from the get-go, which was not the case on caffeine. It's strange, I have heard enough stories like yours that I was curious if I'd notice any benefit from stopping caffeine intake. Especially because I don't actually notice any effects what so ever from drinking caffeine or even mega dosing with caffeine tablets which was a different experiment I tried during an exam period in Uni. Anyway, I stopped all caffeine intake for 5 weeks figuring that any effects should be noticeable by then. Previously I was drinking at least one cup of coffee everyday and anywhere from 0-5 cups of tea. Only occasionally drank energy drinks as I only every drink them in the first place as a replacement for soft-drinks (soda) since I like the flavour. Throughout the whole 5 weeks I didn't feel any different, didn't feel any particular craving for coffee or tea, though I did miss having good hot drink options. Talked to my family about it, and wasn't particularly surprised to learn that neither of my parents or sets of grandparents noticed any effects from caffeine either. They expressed to me that they also only ever drink it for the flavour. None of them quit for a period like I did, so who knows if they would notice effects from quitting. Completely different and varied responses from friends with some treating caffeine like a full blown upper, swearing that a cup after lunch would completely inhibit sleep and keep them alert for the whole arvo. Others were of the opinion that caffeine didn't do anything at all and was purely a placebo. Personally I'm of the opinion that like every drug it just affects people differently and it's not a particularly strong one in the first place. I might just fall into the unlucky (or lucky depending on your perspective) few who don't get any effects from it.

On a societal level, if everyone is being affected that way, it's going to affect things in a really negative way. After more than 60 years of drinking coffee using every method, grind, roast and place of origin possible I've settled on pour over drip with medium roast Columbian beans that I grind relatively fine with a small electric grinder. 2 tablespoons coffee per 6oz water at 200 degrees F.

I feel like energy drinks (Red Bull, Monster, 5 Hour Energy) fit that bill better than coffee. All my 20-something working friends who pull late nights but still need to be awake for work in the morning knock back Monsters and Red Bulls way more than coffee. Personally I use coffee for its anti-depression effects. Something about drinking a coffee and then doing exercise works WONDERS for my mental health in ways that I don't think "society" would approve of considering how desperate "society" is for everyone to be overweight and depressed so they can hook you on medications to "treat" it.
@TheCostantinus
@TheCostantinus 2 күн бұрын
@@harrisonmccartney4878 I can agree that energy drinks fits my description better (infact I don't drink them either), but coffee is used for this purpose as well. it's the workout itself that gives you anti-depressant effects, coffee has little to do with it besides giving you a little boost, society hates that you keep yourself in shape, not that you drink coffee. You may use coffee for your own benefit, but most people don't. As long as you don't overwork yourself and upset your circadian rythm to meet impossible deadlines, then you're not doing society's game, coffee or not.

Habitual coffee drinker and lover here. Just wanted to say thanks for another banger. As far as how I choose my beans, I'm not picky about it having to always be the darkest roast or bean. Rather the region. I prefer Ethiopian and Guatemalan coffees. Ethan Chlebowski did a great video talking about roasting and how coffee gets it's designations. I prefer medium beans (though he debunked that it's not necessarily the color but the roasting process) and French Press is the single most balanced way to make coffee. I will die on that hill. Especially if you want to get the full bean flavor and drink it black like I do. Every other method that uses a filter of some sort reduces/removes the oils, save for espresso. Everything is just too acidic, burns the grounds, requires more effort to make, etc.

@@jarduhat8267 whoa I didn't know they made those. I know what you mean, it really isn't easy to explain everything to people who say I'm a huge coffee guy, because I'm really not, haha. Immersion coffee brewing methods are my favorite though. I think they're as close to tasting the bean in a way that doesn't just burn the damn bean, or otherwise do some chemical reaction that changes it and bakes them indistinguishable from one another. I drink coffee black 95% of the time, I like coffee flavor. I enjoy the changes big & small from altitude and environment, the traits/flavors that come from certain regions, etc. so immersion is the way the go!

So. In my 30’s I started having a lot of breast pain. Went to the Dr. he did the usual stuff. (Went several times). He finally told me about some studies at what could cause this. Salt, too much red meat and finally caffeine. Since I didn’t do much of the first two I decided to quit caffeine. After the mild headaches that followed because of the caffeine withdrawal I started to notice less pain. Rather quickly I was free of pain. The first year if I would have just one serving of caffeine I would notice some aching. I think women’s hormones contributed to the sensitivity. I have spoken to other women with the same issues tried laying off the caffeine and it helped them. The best thing about not drinking caffeine regularly is that when I need to stay awake it really works.

I drink coffee every day, I almost don't even drink water anymore. Im almost completely immune to caffeine, and it used to make me extremely sleepy. It was a ritual to drink 2 cups of coffee before I went to sleep to help me sleep. I have a paradoxical effect to it though because of ADHD and maybe my autism too. I get NO withdrawals if I stop drinking coffee. I could just drink nothing but water for the next month and I won't get headaches or fatigue. Ive done it several times before, sometimes I was forced to because I didn't have coffee available. I know im probably not normal in this way though. The only time I really notice caffeine is when I drink like 3 energy drinks back to back within 20 minutes, and even then I think its more about taurine and sugar than the caffeine giving me the shakes. I also have a massive sweet tooth that I struggle dealing with, trying hard to cut back on sugar. Im a massive sugar addict, but I do a pretty good job now. I barely eat candy even when its offered to me for free now. Then again I ate a bag of chocolates last weekend. Maybe caffeine has a role in that. Also, im one of the biggest coffee drinkers you might ever meet. I can confirm, it does make you pee more. I don't feel dehydrated though, and I crave salt all the time. Maybe coffee has something to do with that too, but ive always craved salt, and ive been chronically under... salted... or something. I get cramps and stuff that are explained by a lack of salts. Anecdotal but I think coffee makes you pee more, especially after first drinking it. So like you have a cup and an hour later it makes you pee, but not as much as lemonade though. That stuff really makes you have to piss and idk why. My blood pressure is significantly lower than most peoples, I eat a lot of saturated/animal fat, a LOT of salt. My Blood pressure is consistently below 90/70, normally hovering around 80/60 or lower. I don't work out anymore but I used to be a track athlete, so my BP should be getting higher not lower. Can confirm coffee doesn't increase my BP. P.S. He asked at the end, how or where I get my coffee. I am picky, shit coffee is shit, they also throw lots of chemicals onto the plants so the better sourced coffee the better it tastes and feels. Last few years ive been getting a Lions Mane and Chaga infused coffee by Four Sigmatic. I highly recommend these guys, there might be better coffee out there but this is some of the best ive got.

I gave up all coffee for 5 months. Not drinking it had zero apparent positive effects. I was also able to stop drinking without reducing. Just stopped one day and no withdrawal. Subsequently, I drank decaf for 2 months but didn't like the flavour. I went back to caffeinated for better flavour. I have pulsatile tinnitus and I discovered caffeinated coffee reduces that tinnitus. I think it is the caffeine, because decaf didn't do that. I once had a long weekend drinking decaf and the tinnitus was awful by the Monday. The audiologist had never heard of this effect before. I suggested to them that cerebral vasodilation could be the benefit for me. Instant coffee takes 15 minutes to have a noticeable effect and lasts for many hours. These days I don't much notice the tinnitus. My brachial blood pressure does not change. As for the sweetness sensitivity, coffee does not affect that for me. I find 90% dark chocolate quite sweet and need to go for 92% to just about be non-sweet. I find milk very sweet which is one reason I never drink it.

I was a coffee drinker for about 17 years and quit a year ago. For the last 7 years of drinking it, I used instant coffee. It was really all about the caffeine for me. I needed two cups a day-one in the morning and one around noon. If I missed either, I’d get a terrible migraine. Eventually, acid reflux made me consider quitting. Since I was using instant coffee, I was able to measure smaller doses, and I gradually reduced my intake over several weeks. By the end, I was down to just a small amount per cup, and I managed to avoid migraines during the process. Now that I’m caffeine-free, I sleep better, and it hasn’t affected my productivity. I also no longer have acid reflux, though I’m not 100% sure coffee was the cause-it’s just a correlation. One thing I’ve learned is that I’m really sensitive to caffeine. If I have even a few sips of my wife’s drink, I’ll end up with a migraine about 18 hours later. I haven’t met anyone else who experiences migraines from skipping caffeine like I did.

Fantastic video! One thing you might add - Darker roast coffee = stronger flavor and most think it has more caffeine, but really it's just the opposite. Dark roast is just cooked longer. The longer the beans are cooked, the more caffeine is roasted out of them. So if you want more caffeine, drink a light roast or breakfast blend. They are roasted the least. Also, the coffee bean is actually not a bean, but the seed (pit) of a fruit. Specifically, a type of cherry.

Quality. I've been grinding beans since the 80's. I love the Technivorm Mochamaster coffeemaker. Correct brewing temperature is achieved by a separate brewing element (most use warming element to brew and it's not hot enough). Brewing time is fast so coffee is not even close to being bitter. A most excellent brew! A conical burr grinder makes uniform sized ground coffee. You need less for a strong brew because of that and its freshness. I'll pass on restaurant and store brews and go without if I can't enjoy the fresh brew I make myself. Some of that stuff tastes like dirty dishwater . . .

I put the grounds in a quart jar, add water (currently experimenting with alkaline water), use a coffee filter on top of the water to keep the grounds wet, and let it sit in the fridge for a day or two. I then filter it a couple of times. I find the coffee is much nicer on my stomach because the acidity is lower.

Dude! First time seeing your channel. Great video and your inflection lends well to just listening, as I was. Here's the thing with coffee. Drink it black and choose a smooth one like Community Coffee. The darker ones are fine but more acidic. The reason I say drink it black is if you add sugar, you're adding sugar that your body already doesn't need. Some people add milk or cream, but it gives it a weird texture without the sweetness from the sugar, think eating cake that tastes like sour patch kids it's off-putting. Cream and sugar tastes great but again added sugar. Plane black coffee tastes bad at first, drink it for 3 days and you'll acquire the taste for it.

It allows you to be as simple or complex as you want, and there’s tons of tips and recipes online. I would also recommend using coffee that costs about $15 per bag, 100% Arabica light or medium roast. Has better flavor and less caffeine than robusta. Try it straight first, using James Hoffman’s Ultimate Aeropress recipe. Experiment with brew temperature and brew time to change the flavor towards less bitter or less sour. Those flavors mean the extraction wasn’t correct.

Grind your own beans, fresh daily if you don't mind the noise. Lighter roast coffees, support a local shop if they roast their own. No salt. Filtered water. Keep your machines pretty clean, just a damp paper towel wipe after use is fine. Always use a paper filter, don't rely on plastic basket style filters to do enough. I don't think much about temperatures or fancy brew styles, just a single serve machine for one cup at a time. Decaf tends to be higher quality coffee because the process of removing caffeine adds bitterness and it needs higher quality beans to taste almost as good as caffeinated. I wouldn't bother with decaf outside of an experiment to see the mid-term effects, I'm here for the natural drugs. Chobani creamer is made of actual cream and sugar, no hydrogenated oils or sweeteners. A little creamer goes a long way. I get some appeal for drinking it black, but never got used to it.

Gigantic Coffee lover for longest time, I quit caffeine, for a long while completely, now using it only maybe 2-3 times a month since i learned some intake isn't too sinister, either as a treat (i REALLY love taste of coffee) or tool (need to be up early, all day, behind with stuff etc) and couldn't be happier. It only takes 2 weeks of quitting to get back all your natural energy levels and once you do you realize how much constant over-use of it holds you back. Caffeine is a drug with all the downsides of any drug, the good thing is just how easy it is to quit relatively speaking, the bad thing is how because its mild most people drastically over consume and fool themselves into thinking its for their betterment, that they NEED it, like any other addict will. I replaced Coffee intake with Chocolate Milk in morning and sodas/energy drinks with whatever natural or low calorie juice (usually lemonade etc) at night for anyone wondering about how one coffee lover would do this, simply other stuff i like. Also i DO NOT count super low caffeine things like Chocolate, its technically in there but even during my biggest fasts from caffeine it made no noticeable difference. I quit because i noticed caffeine was making me way more anxious as i aged, thus destroying any benefit of concentration it used to give me, and i figure that change was my body telling me it had had enough of this drug. Besides the desire to reduce felt, static anxiety, what really convinced me was meeting 2 friends with very different backrounds who love their jobs, self made, and work 16-18 hours a day effectively, independently of each other both these super energetic guys with basically opposite diets who turned out to only have similarity of basically almost no caffeine. Each just indulging as a treat, tea at times for one of them (the vegetarian) and tiny bit of soda for the other (the carnivore), not a daily thing. ... ... .... Oh, also after trying dozens of brands for years, for the price, or even ignoring price, Aldi Medium Roast is my favorite plain coffee, ideally cold brewed at home but any method its good. Tim Hortons Iced Capps are what introduced me and caused roughly a 20 year bender, and when i do indulge 2-3 times a month now, usually i go for that (thus why Chocolate Milk made such a easy replacement)
