Caffeine is a drug! No doubt about that! But how much is too much? And what happens if you drink too much caffeine?
Caffeine is not only found in coffee or tea, but also cola, energy drinks and some brands of processed foods, like ice cream or potato chips! Even though it is not considered to be addictive, people, including children can develop a physical dependence on caffeine!
This physical dependence means that people can experience severe withdrawal symptoms when they decrease their caffeine intake!
Coffee and tea can improve or worsen your psychological health, and also physical health! It can worsen or even cause anxiety! But it can also improve depression! Coffee can worsen your LDL cholesterol level, but also protect against liver cirrhosis! So, what are the health benefits, coffee vs. tea?

Thank you this was very helpful! Great work. I find it curious that a lot of studies about anxiety and tea say that tea helps but studies about coffee and anxiety says it does not.

I like it, excellent overview ans the graphics are a lot of fun to watch. It would be amazing if you could link all the sources of the info too somewhere.... but that is a tall order :)

Why is coffe so bad when somebody has got reflux?

At the end of the esophagus, there is a small muscle, called sphincter. It prevents stomach acid (and its vapor) to enter the esophagus, normally. Because of different reasons (high fat meal, coffee,...) it can loosen up and allow/permit stomach acid/vapor to enter the esophagus. Thus, high fat meals and coffee increase the risk for reflux (GERD), and can worsen existing reflux. It seems that decaffeinated coffee is better than coffee with caffeine for reflux! Other compounds, produced by roasting coffee beans may also play a role. Or in more complicated words by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine: "Coffee reduces lower esophageal sphincter pressure, permitting gastroesophageal reflux. Although studies have repeatedly shown that caffeine itself is not responsible for GERD, some evidence does indicate that decaffeination of coffee significantly reduces reflux. In addition, other compounds, such as those formed from roasting coffee, may trigger reflux indicating potential multifactorial associations."

Am Ende der Speiseröhre gibt es einen kleinen Muskel (Sphinkter). Er verhindert das Magensäure(dampf) in die Speiseröhre eintritt, normalerweise. Aus verschiedenen Gründen (fettreiche Mahlzeit, Kaffee,...) kann sich der Muskel lockern und damit den Eintritt von Magensäure(dampf) in die Speiseröhre erlauben/zulassen. Also erhöhen fettreiche Mahlzeiten und Kaffee das Risiko für Reflux (GERD), und verschlimmern bestehenden Reflux. Es scheint, dass entkoffeinierter Kaffee besser als Kaffee mit Koffein ist, für Reflux! Andere Komponenten, die beim Rösten der Kaffeebohnen entstehen, könnten auch eine Rolle spielen. In komplizierteren Worden des Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine: "Kaffee reduziert den Druck des tieferen Speiseröhrensphinkters, was Speiseröhrenreflux zulässt. Obwohl Studien gezeigt haben, dass Koffein selbst nicht für GERD verantwortlich ist, gibt es Evidenz die zeigt, dass entkoffeinierter Kaffee Reflux stark reduziert. Zusätzlich können andere Komponenten, die bei der Röstung des Kaffees entstehen, auf mögliche multifaktorielle Assoziationen hindeuten."
