Cage Aggression With Parrots and How To Fix It

Hey Bird Gang! Let's talk about cage aggression in parrots! You know how cute little skittles is when you hang out with him outside the cage. Then all of a sudden when you try to change out food bowls or toys, all of a sudden your parrot becomes a naughty bird and is aggressive out of no where.

I keep food out of the cage. It sits on top or just outside the cage. My parrots have to come out to eat. I also change their cages to a smaller cage for just sleeping . They have a larger cage for play time. No aggression and they come out without any issues.

I have 30 years experience with Cockatiels. I have bred and hand raised hundreds. I've also hand trained 3 previously abused rescue birds. But..... I've had a rescue who was previously abused and after 3 years, I've made no progress. He will eat nothing but seed, no matter how many things I offer. He does not consider millet a treat. He doesnt consider any form of food to be a treat. He will sing to me from afar, but will not allow me anywhere near him. His cage aggression has gotten much worse over the 3 years I have owned him, even though he is in an extremely large cage for his size. His location is 6 feet from where I sit most of the day, and 4 feet from where I sleep. He will not only not let me pick him up with my hand, but will attack sticks or one of his own perches (he has 5 in his cage). Because of this, I can not start by stick training him. If I walk up near his cage, he will actually attack his own toys. I assume he was very badly abused, but I'm at a loss of how to get him to bond with me. He must be lonely and bored since he will not interact with anyone. Any advice would be appreciated.

Congrats for your channel! I have a quaker parrot for 3 weeks now, who is supposed to be almost 6 months old. He is very friendly but he starts showing territorial behaviour occasionally. We try not to trigger him though. It's kinda early to be hormonal, right ? How long does the hormonal period last? Thanks for your response in advance and for your great videos! You have such a nice boy there! 😊

Hmmm yeah it can vary usually around 1 year old+ but could be sooner it’s not an exact science every bird is different. A bird can be territorial without actually being transitioning into an adult but it’s usually night and day when they’re just always mean or aggressive or just not acting like they used to but the phase passes with time usually a few months or more. If it’s isolated to just the cage, probably cage aggression, if it’s overall then could be that transition period. Either way keep working with your Quaker in training sessions to promote interaction/relationship.

My cocktail is aggressive when my hands get near him, he won’t allow me to hold him! I rescued him from a family that left him in a very small cage! Never socialized him, or interacted with him! I’ve been working very hard to gain his trust! Just recently he’s finally started to take food/treats from my hands! But he absolutely does not want to come out of the cage! And will not step up to my hands! If you can please please please give some advice! I’d be appreciative!

I too bought a cockatiel from pet shop, which lived in a small cage with 7 cockatiels. Its very aggressive i had gained he’s trust a little, taking treats coming out of the cage, I decided to sell him recently so i kind of gave up on training. But I couldn’t make myself sell him, so I’m keeping him and now he lost every progress and he’s very aggressive..

My mother just bought an Amazon parrot it's a nice friendly bird to me and I don't even like birds but my mom who adores her is constantly being bitten drawing blood in some cases and she's really aggressive and territorial with my mother. Do you have any tips on how my mom can tame the bird to like her.

Help My bird like to run in random areas in the cage and start biting it when he want to go outside Which isn't a problem until he does it the whole time The noises he makes biting the cage and running from place to place is annoying My bird normally goes outside most of the times if not all the time just bcz he seek freedom

I have a 1,5 year old cockatiel she became aggressive towards me even if i just go up to the cage nothing happened to her that i know of that could cause aggression does it mean shes territorial or hormonal? I cant even feed her without her trying to bite me and ive had her for over a month and she even ate out of my hand

Not sure to be exact without more info. Around that’s ages is when they transition to adults and can become hormonal
