Stich! Man, this time last year I would've completely given up after the A shape but thanks to you, a couple of weeks ago I started to try to learn all my caged minor shapes using everything I learned in the major chord vid you mentioned along with everything you've showed me about intervals. I f'n nailed em!! I've gone from knowing absolutely no theory to figuring out how to build minor chords on my own! I've said it a bunch of times but I don't think it's enough. Seriously man, thank you! 👊

I agree Mike, there are lessons on it if you trawl around, but whenever someone does a caged video it always seems to be the Major one. But if you know the minor one you can mix 'em just like your pentatonics. And as caged and pentatonics kinda go together it gives you many more possibilities. Plus there are songs using both. Stich addressed the Cm and G well also.

Glad you are back! I've never understood the purpose of CAGED until this video. You have a way of explaining things on the guitar I've only seen from you, Paul Gilbert, and Steve Stine. I wish I had more than 1 like to give.

Ok, this is awesome. I took lessons for 7 years a while back and built up some solid technical abilities, but never learned any music theory. It was all just learning tabs and playing covers. After a 4-ish year break from playing, I'm coming back and trying to learn how to improv and really understand some theory behind what I'm doing. That being said, I'm so glad I've found your channel. Learning the CAGED system was eye-opening. Learning how the CAGED method is applied (e.g. Sample in a Jar) is mind-blowing and exactly the type of thing I've been looking to learn. Next step: learning which chords sound good together and why. Thank you!!

THEE biggest misunderstanding I've learned so far about the C-A-G-E-D system from watching your videos is that the C-A-G-E-D are NOT NOTES but SHAPES played WITHIN a chord. Nobody ever explained it to me and you can image the confusion that set in as a result. NOW I'm beginning to understand the damn thing!

I find it odd that one of the minor chords has the same shape as an Amaj7 chord (1st & 2nd frets) I guess it makes sense. On the piano if you play a C chord (C-E-G) and combine it with an Em chord (E-G-A) you get C-E-G-A or a Cmaj7 chord.

Thanks Ian! Great video. Not sure if you have any videos on tones or effects but curious how you made that sound effect on the last note of the Sample Intro. I finally bought a new guitar which I am enjoying the sound of and the fact that it stays in tune and doesn't ring on the frets. I have a cheap zoom pedal which gives me a tone that's okay but now I feel like an amp and/or new pedals might be fun.

Nice video. I've been trying to incorporate CAGED into my playing for years, and in the last few years started using the Em, Am, and sometimes Dm shapes to add different voicings. I stayed away from C and G minor CAGED shapes because they seemed like finger twisters. You have confirmed that it's ok to do partial chord shapes for those.

I think I understand the Caged system concept so far, my only problem right now is that the chords don't sound the same in progression as the previous progression (I hope it makes sense). For example a progression of E chord, d minor chord and c minor chord. All barres are on the 3rd fret so it is : E major chord (C shape), D minor chord (e shape), C minor chord (A shape). The problem is when I "transpose" or take the chords a shape higher. THeY DON'T SOUND THE SAME. For example: E major chord ( A shape), D minor chord(D shape) and C minor shape(G shape). Awesome video though I wouldn't even understand what I'm writing without you. But could you please help🤪

You are experiencing what we call different voicings. All voicings are going to sound a little different. When you are playing a song you should use whichever voicing the song uses. The voicings for this video are going to lead into… playing different voicings with other people and also mainly the road map for soloing all over the fretboard. So even though they sound different, they are supposed to and it will lead to a much better guitar freedom than you think. Keep watching the playlist and the main idea of caged will become even clearer.
