This animation shows a Light Maintenance Facility being planned into the Brisbane community south of San Francisco. This will be a service point for any trains in need of emergency repair services and supply trains and crew to SF in the morning.
The Northern California Light Maintenance Facility in Brisbane would serve as a location where trains are cleaned, serviced, and stored and as a service point for any trains in need of emergency repair services. The facility would supply trains and crew to the San Francisco terminal station at the start of the day.
A Light Maintenance Facility (LMF) is used for routine maintenance and operations for the California High-Speed Rail system. The LMF in Brisbane is one of three proposed train maintenance facilities in California that would support high-speed rail operations.
The LMF would be designed, constructed, and operated with LEED® Gold Certification - it will be energy-efficient and environmentally sensitive. With three overlapping work shifts, activities would occur 24 hours a day. Most maintenance activities would take place overnight, between 10:00 pm and 6:00 am.

I read this title and thought "Have people objected so much that you have to build this facility in Australia just to keep them happy?" 😆

I definitely think that, as a member of the general public, Alternative A looks a lot less intrusive to the businesses on Bayshore Blvd and the Bayshore Caltrain station. If Alternative B is going to overflow the old abandoned rail yard boundaries in the West then I think that it might lead to some complaints. I look forward to more info on this project.

Now that Biden is President maybe we’ll get some rail funds from the federal government. Hopefully as part of a larger infrastructure program.

@Acerailfan3101 F40PH we just just outvoted the Republicans in this state by 5 million votes and control like 45 of 53 congressional districts. 10 million votes for Biden. Where exactly do you see the nimbyism? Most of it was in the first phase and that’s already getting built.

@Acerailfan3101 F40PH I don’t care if they speed it up as long as it has the funding to connect LA to the Bay Area

@Acerailfan3101 F40PH so good news. LA Metro CEO Phil Washington was named the lead of the Biden/Harris Transportation Agency Review Team. This has tremendous implications for rail projects as Metro is closely tied to the development of high speed rail in LA.

Assuming that the property is already paid for, it will cost more in wages to locate near San Francisco. I wonder why a valley location wasn't chosen?

There will be a Heavy Maintenance Facility in the Central Valley. This Light Maintenance Facility needs to be near the northern terminus of the line to store trains, serve as a base for engineers and conductors, and perform light maintenance tasks close to where the trains start and end their journeys.

Wouldn't a short tunnel going under the tracks to the yard be cheaper than that enormous embankment and trellis?

most probably. But it's also possible that the soil isn't easy to work with? Dunno

I still have to say that from an operational stand-point that the Maintenance Facility for South San Francisco should use the former SP Bayshore facilities. The property has stayed unused since the 1990's. It's several acres of land that the city of Brisbane would love to get their hands on for housing development, but all the land is zoned industrial use.

Why not build the maintenance facility on the west side of the Caltrain tracks in the former SP Bayshore Yard? You could reutilize the land there for a light maintenance and storage facility there while also breathing new life into a piece of California railroad history. Same could go for reutilizing the former SP Taylor Yard in LA for a light maintenance facility there.

The land where the proposed maintenance facility is planned has never been built upon. It was created after WW2 when the Bayshore freeway was built. Given it's proximity to the bay you would think it is more valuable for real estate development. The land to the west was the Southern Pacific Railroad Bayshore yard and locomotive maintenance facility. You would think it would be well suited for use as a maintenance facility as remediating it for that use would be simpler than for other real estate development.

Very true. The land to the west was the option for Alternative B. However, the number of tracks required for the LMF means that it would have to expand the western boundary and remove several businesses along Bayshore Blvd. Overall, Alternative B was identified as the more expensive option so Alternative A is currently the preferred option. The land to the east is currently used as a dirt storage by a soil and rock company so it must not have that much value right now. Fun fact: This alternative includes a new park along Lagoon Rd. so that might indicate Bayshore’s intention to develop this bay-side land further.

Also a lot of that landfill built in the WWII era is radioactive and uninhabitable, Hunter's Point and Treasure Island being two areas that have gone thru a bunch of legal hurdles to redevelop (beautiful views indeed tho)

Southern Pacific Railroad Mussel Slough near Hanford, CA. #MusselSlough #HanfordWar History is repeating 1880 settlers v's the southern pacific railroad over land titles. Read the history of Dinuba's history and Hanford CA during the 1800's.

Remembering this is where GS-4s and other Espee locos were once maintained makes me sigh. Many photos were taken of SP trains bursting out of the tunnel from the Bayshore station platforms.

From maintaining one generation‘s California rail icon to another. By the way, the old SP yard location with the roundhouse is still planned to be unused on the west side of the tracks. I hope any future developments on that lot pay tribute to its unique history.
