The lake/Skyline/lack of industry on the waterfront! Recently moved to Dublin (Ireland) and while there is access to the water, there is still a ton of industry and honestly makes it a bit of an eyesore. I didn't realize how lucky we were in Chicago to have unobstructed water access and gorgeous views of the lake/parks/architecture! It's underrated!

I agree. I grew up on the east coast and ironically, cities like Philly, Baltimore, NYC, all of which have bodies of water bordering them, do not have ANY desireable looking swimming or recreational areas along the water front..... Chicago is the first city I've ever lived where it borders a huge body of water that is that is this beautiful.... AND you can actually swim in. Just this morning, I went jogging along the lakefront trail and kept thinking to myself "I actually live here."

This is a great video. No clue how the algorithm recommended this to me, but I watched it and enjoyed it. As a Chicago native tho (I did leave but come back regularly, only in the summer), I have some additional context for anyone considering moving to Chicago. This is in no way meant to take from the purpose of the creator's video or change her opinion of the city, I'm just providing additional context for anyone scrolling the the comments. Chicago is cheaper than other big cities like LA or NYC, but if you're coming from a regular city, Chicago is probably going to be more expensive. Yes, houses are cheaper than a lot of cities, but property taxes are pretty outrageous and the houses are old. One of my houses in Vegas cost about $350k with annual property taxes around $1,100. Same size house in Chicago I can get for probably $160-225k (depending where at in the city), but property taxes would probably be closer to $3k+/yr (depending on where at in the city) with consistent 3%+ increases every year and the house would probably be close to 100yrs old or older. If you own rentals, it's also not a very landlord friendly city. Unless you're coming from NYC or LA, rent will likely be higher too. From outsiders looking in, you gotta understand (not even including the many villages & suburbs).. there are 4 different Chicagos lol: The Black Part The White Part The Mexican Part Chinatown And you can say downtown is the middle. Chicago is historically (by design) a very segregated place, and depending on what part you live in, your experience of Chicago can be vastly different. This doesn't mean you can't go to the Mexican Part if you're a white person or you can't go to the White Part if you're a black person. I'm simply saying that LIVIING in a particular part can potentially yield a different experience and opinion of Chicago than presented in this video. With that said, if you are considering moving to Chicago, you should probably visit first and move to a neighborhood you think is sufficient for you. Also, there are good and bad neighborhoods in each "part", but if you don't make enough money for the good parts, you should probably look into getting a concealed carry permit because you're gonna be priced out of not having to deal with regularly occurring Chicago shenanigans. You'll most likely be fine if you know how to move accordingly, but you should at least learn some basic de-escalation tactics or learn how to box or something. It's tons to do and experience in Chicago, yes, but this video seems to focus on those aspects which are more touristy; and I understand that this is her actual experience living in Chicago, but your actual experience may differ... Lastly, the creator said she hails from Cali and Arizona, so she loves the winter. Imo, It's new for her, or she's discovered that she's one of those people who love the cold. As a Native who left for Vegas, and bounced around the world while in the Air Force, who also lived in Arizona... Chicago winters are absolutely hell. Ain't no way I'm trading a Southern California, Arizona, or Vegas winter for one of Chicago's. If I want snow, I'll go to Tahoe for a weekend.. point is, do not let this video make you think that the winters are worth it. If you aren't one of those people who love the cold, you're probably gonna hate Chicago in the winter, especially if you're coming from a place that does not get as cold as Chicago. With all that said, idk if it's nostalgia or it's by blood or birthplace bias, but I never feel the same love for any other city I've been to like I do for Chicago.. Best city in the whole wide world!!... never moving back tho lol

Great points! I live in Chicago, originally from AZ and I hate it here and plan to move away as soon as I’m finished grad school. Hate the 6 mo of winter, horrible vegan food scene for a big city (but it’s the Midwest so understandable I guess), and I live in South Chicago where theft, screaming at people in the streets and physical altercations are the popular pastimes.

My daughter moved to Chicago and has done very well for herself. (she doesn't own a car, either) When I went to visit her for the first time, I was bowled over by the sheer size of they city, but what impressed me even more were THE PEOPLE. I found them to be super nice, down-to-earth, and generous.

I was born in Chicago but moved away to Seattle when I was 8. After living in Seattle for a few years we relocated to Orlando FL, after I graduated I moved to Atlanta Ga for college. Fast forward to 2022 I was able to move back home to Chicago for the first time since I was a kid. I must say I don’t plan on living anywhere else it just hits different when you’re experiencing living in your hometown as an adult for the first time.. love my city and your content! ❤️ Side note: Chicago is definitely more affordable than Atlanta surprisingly. I was paying $1500 for a studio in Midtown vs $1100 here for a one bedroom in a really nice and safe area near the CTA can’t beat it!

I thoroughly enjoyed this video. I’ve been to Chicago before. I went to my basic training for the Navy in Great Lakes and that’s around the timeframe when I fell in love with the city of Chicago. I’m a born and raised southerner, currently residing in Dallas, TX and I keep wondering how it would be to live in a city like Chicago. Dallas is a beautiful city but I’m kinda realizing that it’s not a final destination for me and my fiancé and considering that he has family in Chicago I wouldn’t mind giving the city a go. This video is so so great! I am from Oregon, went to college in Wisconsin which shocked my system but slowly I learned to love it. By the end I was desperately craving the heat and thought i'd never want to see snow again, so I moved to scottsdale. Moving there in May, I quickly questioned my decision. The heat is never ending. And it's not just warm, it's hot at hell. Like living in an oven all the time. Plus the year just drags on since there's no variation in seasons. I didn't realize how much I love the seasons haha. I am now longing for the midwest again as it's seriously such a beautiful place. The people are SO friendly and the seasons are arguably underrated. How can we appreciate summer, spring, and fall without a treacherous winter. There's something very quiet and peaceful about the long winters. Thank you for this video!

You are young - you can go wherever you want. For me, having seasons is huge. I'm not young but I agree with much of what you say. As an ageing Midwesterner, I am sick of the cold and snow. But, our winters are getting milder and, being older, I have the money to get away. A week in Portugal can really break up the winter. The lower cost of living and an extremely well connected international airport means I can zip off to somewhere warm very easily. And, when younger, there was something about braving the cold and snow to meet friends out. It was a badge of honor.

I am a 33 year old teacher from Germany and would like to move to Chicago because of Astrocartography and because I'd like to switch my career to interior design and architecture. Chicago also always amazed me because I am also a big fan of the basketball culture, there is something so fresh and cool about all of it.. People here in Germany are so cold, arrogant and ignorant, I never felt included here. I also have no family so I am quite flexible and free.. BUT people tell me that the crime rate is very high there (Chiraq they say, lmao) and the health care system would destroy me financially and that I would end up on the streets.

@maliyafatima don’t move there. I unfortunately made the big mistake of living there for over 2 years and I couldn’t wait to get out of there. People are really rude, traffic is one of the worst in the country. Taxes are horrific for what it should be in a mid west city. Then the winter is terrible cold for 7 months out of the year. Snowdrifts blocking your car in, salt all over your pants every day. Then now wildfires every “summer” smoke 💨 everywhere. My wife goes there for meetings some times and complained about how bad the smoke is and brings on her asthma. But everyone living there pretends it’s not there. 😂

Such a good list. One thing I'm surprised was missed, #1 and #3 are a big part of why I love living in Chicago, but they are directly related. Chicago has *two* airports that *both* have public transit running right to them. There is no getting picked up at the airport, or dealing with cabs or ubers. Blue line to O'Hare, Orange to Midway, just makes that travel situation even easier. If you have to hop around the US a lot for any reason, or even travel internationally often, Chicago is just the best.

I liked your list. I have only one nit to pick. You mentioned that you liked the great public transportation in Chicago. As a regular CTA user, the only conclusion that I can draw is that you‘ve never used public transportation outside the U.S. Here‘s a suggestion. Go ride the European subways (London, Paris, Berlin, Madrid). They‘re better under every measure than U.S. subways. Then go ride the Asian subways (Beijing, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Tokyo, Seoul). They‘re better under every measure than the European subways. If you rode the Shanghai subway, for example, you would think you went 100 years into the future. All I‘m saying is that the CTA has a long way to go to be good, much less great. Don‘t accept mediocrity.

@@ReiseLukas Whatever floats your boat dude. I grew up in the country and lived majority of my life in small rural communities. It does have it perks but it ends up getting boring after awhile. I mean I can only take the same bar, local pizza shop, and chinese takeout place for so long before I wanna pull my hair out. I prefer city life because it's more vibrant, walkable, I can live easily without a car, and better job opportunities.... I'd only return to rural life when I retire. To each their own.

Yes, Chicago is good for the middle class and above. Other than that Chicago is basically a shithole. The cost of living in Chicago is 31% more than the state average and 20% higher than the national average. Property value in Chicago fell by about 2% compared to the national average. 50% more expensive housing than the national average. Only utilities were slightly cheaper by 3%. Crime rates in Chicago are horrible, about 67% worse crime rates than the national average. This means that you have about a 1/30 chance of being a victim of either a violent or property crime. Chicago is only cheap if you compare it to cities like New York or L.A.

How about the Property Tax and the Sales Tax within the City of Chicago?
@Teadon86
@Teadon86 11 ай бұрын
@@T.S.000 Sales tax is 10.25% compared to the national average of 5.1%. Effective property tax is 2.9%, although, in some areas of Illinois the tax is high as 6.697% compared to an effective rate of 1.1% throughout America. PS: the reason why it is this expensive is because of all the gibs provided to the unproductive demographics of the state and city. The productive demographics (Mostly Whites and Asians) are fleeing this socialist shithole that hates them for simply daring to exist.

I can give you 10 reasons why not to live in Chicago. 1. Crime (THIS IS BIG) 2. High Cost of Living 3. Heavy Traffic 4. Pollution 5. Political Corruption 6. Protests are common 7. Shooting at Festivals 8. Constant Construction 9. Very close living to neighbors 10. Difficult finding parking People who are in the middle and lower class are leaving Chicago due to all these factors. ESPECIALLY Crime. If your rich and like living in small condos away from lower class areas, you'll be fine. If not, find a different place. I've been to Chicago many times, I live near Chicago. I have friends in Chicago. My brother travels to Chicago for work. I know how Chicago looks. And if your are a republican or conservative there, you'll most likely be hated by a lot of liberals, or Democrats.
