At the end of the day, the WNBA is still a business. If the teams aren't making a profit, you can't expect them to increase player's salaries. If everyone that is complaining about the amount of money the women are being paid actually went to the games, they would be able to afford to pay them more.

They've outright said that they're spending upfront to make more money in the long term as team values increase. Even talking PTAOI though, the last time we heard publicly, the WNBA was in the hole $10 million with revenues of $60 million. Last year, they grossed ~$200 million. I'd guess they're definitely in the black now. But the player pay % has probably dropped even further than the 25% i mentioned before, now it's probably closer to 10%.

I wish people would understand this. It's nothing to do with sexism, It's basic economics, the WNBA whether you like it or not, is not as popular as the NBA or NFL etc. As a consequence, this means less investors and money, less money means that they can only dish out so much money. If the product is more popular, more money will come, until then....

A proper response that would challenge this notion is that women's professional sports have been around for only a decade or slightly more...while most male pro leagues have been around for 70 to 100+ years. Thus, the male leagues have had significantly more time to build an audience. Whether or not that argument is actually why is beyond the point.

If NFL or NBA players made similar money to WNBA players the issue would be that the owners who are already wealthy beyond any normals persons wildest dream would be simply filling their pockets with even more money that other people work their entire life to perfect their style of play the NFL and NBA are extremely profitable and the players should share in the wealth. It’s actually very simple entertaining and great players bring in viewers viewers=money owners don’t bring in viewers why should all the money go to them.

The biggest exposure the WNBA has gotten over the years is the president negotiating the release of a Weed smoker player who got caught smuggling contraband in Russia. They got more CNN support than the game itself. The WNBA has done everything they can to gain more exposure. Talent was never the problem the appeal is. Support the brand.

Why are the women’s basketballs smaller but the hoops are the same size? The WNBA needs to start making money before they can pay players. Everyone who whines about it needs to go buy tickets and put butts in seats. Last year attendance was up to a whopping 6,600 per game around the league. That’s lame duck Oakland A’s territory.

Its veey clear Caitlin isnt doing this for the money. If she wanted money she could've gone overseas and made good money or taken the deal from Ice Cube and made money too. She went to the WNBA to help elevate them and draw more eyes to them and clearly its already working. This young woman just loves to play basketball and shes pretty good at it too. She could've gone anywhere and made so much more but she wanted to go to the WNBA.

I think the only thing that sucks with that contract is the 4 years, WNBA doesn't generate money so they can't pay their players millions but Clark will bring more eyes to the game so the WBNA and her team will make way more money over the next 4 years. I wouldn't be surprised if her next contract is in the couple millions a year.

The WNBA needs to get their CBA right. Like, the NHL makes less than the NBA so naturally the players earn less, but since they have similar CBA's, if the NHL became as popular as the NBA the players would get similar contracts. Even if the WNBA was as popular as the NBA, the players would still earn A LOT less.

Fact is that if she was paid a percentage of revenue, she'd be paying the WNBA to play. That's why her cheque is what it is. It's also a rookie contract, and every sport has rookie caps, if not outright pre-determined tiered deals. It's silly to have outrage over this.

The salary at the time of the draft is standard for that moment of time. BUT now that there are major developments with an influx of WNBA income through TV deals etc (Thanks to CC 100%) those salaries for players should all go up and be allowed to be renegotiated if players wish to do so. Some are being overpaid and would be smart to keep it the same. This should include rookies in my opinion.

The WNBA does not currently have the resources to allow a massive contract. This new crop of talent might change things but that takes time. The league didn’t just explode with revenue because the draft happened.. they need to sell tickets, and more than just tickets to Fever games. Watch Chicago’s attendance this year. That will be a good benchmark for how impactful this draft has been in terms of value
