Some of the writing is questionable, but overall it's pretty great. The issue is that basically everyone promoting the show does so by objectifying particularly Sam Heughan. As such, he is not seen as a serious and talented actor, but merely something for women to drool over. People who are not fans of the books therefore think it's something more like smutty soft porn and pass it over. The promotional side of things leaves a lot to be desired. 'Hot Scot, Kilty Pleasures' and all of that undermines the quality of the show.

@anna I find that very unlikely. There's this thing called "no make-up make-up", you know? It's meant to give the illusion of being bare-faced and you look just like yourself, but perfected. I highly doubt she isn't wearing any make-up on a TV show. I mean, even men wear make-up all the time on movies, series, stage, etc. and you can't notice it. That being said, she IS naturally pretty and probably doesn't need much ;)

PlugInKali i know what a no-make-make-up look (most stupid look ever) is and obviously she is wearing something during filming her show. Just like everybody does when they're in front of a camera. But if you watch the show and how she is styled there and especially some of close up shots of her, you will see what i mean. All these promotional things are fake network satisfying events. Do you expect Jimmy to know intimately every project his multiple guests are spruiking on the show? That's why I enjoyed Craig Ferguson's approach. He ripped up the stupid questions given to him by the network and they just chatted, barely acknowledged the superficial reason the guests was there at the end. That said, Jimmy does a fine job of asking questions that a potential new viewer would ask.

Well, he has to develop a character that speaks with an accent that no longer exists. Only that implies discipline and talent to do it in a natural and credible way. I love Catriona too. Caitriona and Sam have had incredible scenes. If they were not talented and credible, a series with two strangers as protagonists would not have lasted as long and less would have convinced the fans of the books.
