In Gloria's version she sounds powefull and conviced and reborn, yelling at the world that she will survive. In this version, however, he sings like he's trying to convince himself that he can survive. Love it.

At first I was afraid I was petrified. Kept thinking I could never live without you by my side. But then I spent so many nights Thinking how you did me wrong. And I grew strong! And I learned how to get along! So now you're back from out of space. I just walked in to find you here with that sad look upon your face. I should have changed that stupid lock! I should have made you leave your key! If I had known for just one second you'd be back to bother me. Go on now, go, walk out that door! Just turn around now‚ cause you're not welcome any more. Weren't you the one who tried to hurt (crush) me with goodbye? Did I crumble Did I lay down and die Oh no, not I! I will survive! Oh and as long as I know how to love I know I stay alive. I've got all my life to live, I've got all my love to give. And I'll survive! I will survive! Hey, hey. It took all the strength I had not to fall apart. Kept tryin' hard to mend the pieces of my broken heart! And I spent oh so many nights just feeling sorry for myself. I used to cry! But now I hold my head up high. And you see me somebody new! I'm not that chained-up little person still in love with you. And so you feel like droppin' in, and just expect me to be free, now I'm saving all my loving for someone who is loving me!

First time seeing the video, and I'm impressed by the brilliant sad humor of a meter reader pouring out his heart alone while doing day-into-night drudgery, giving out tickets to those who are actually living. This kind of video shows off his quirky and very smart storytelling that pervades the lyrics in his albums... and so many people who don't take the time to really seek meaning in Cake's lyrics dismiss them, but they're actually quite masterful. (And yes, I know this is a cover and not John's lyrics - I'm talking about John's storytelling through this video and through his non-cover lyrics.)

I can't believe this is the first time I've ever watched this music video yet I can basically sing the whole song without looking at the lyrics and have been listening to Cake since the mid 90s. I'm a horrible person. I'll try to make up for it by going to some concerts once they go back on tour again. Please go back on tour again soon Cake! Please! 🙏

When I was 13, my parents decided to separate. I already had a CD player so Mum bought me this "Fashion Nugget" because she knew I liked this band from mTV. I listened to this song relentlessly through my headphones in the crappy apartment that she rented. I was so far from my friends; I was so alone and desperate... But I listened to this song and I knew - I wasn't done. I was going to keep on keeping on. I was going to survive. ...And here I am, 27 years later. I survived. Just like you WILL survive.

My sibling and I found a CAKE CD on the side of the road while walking home from middle school. We had no idea who they were. Little did we know, we had stumbled upon one of the greatest albums of the decade, for free. The '90s were fucking cool.

Do you think the dude was mad that he accidentally lost his cd or do you think some girlfriend threw away her boyfriend's Cake because they sound dumb and she wanted the space in the cd case for her Mariah Carey cd?

@@louissaffice6173 The latter explanation is more fitting. It sounds like a CAKE lyric ;)

Word. They will never figure us out. The media kept us constantly on edge until we became critical and stopped caring. So we developed our own ways to view the world.

Every 5 years since the 90s this has been valid. My parents. My friends. Then lovers. Now i thrive with cats and dogs.
