They're VERY good. I'm glad I discovered them. I am always interested in that historical period in time. My female ancestors may have disagreed, given the modern household inventions, but I sometimes feel like that time period went by too fast. 💜

@@honorsilverthorne7227 I'm a woman and I completely agree with you. Present day is certainly a much easier, more affluent life but I wish I was alive in the 17th or 18th century. Life was more difficult but it feels somehow more fulfilling with a stronger sense of family and community. I think people today (though more able to connect with eachother) are just lonely and lost

Since dried fruit is used as a sweetening agent and any dried fruit used to be described as "plums", many plum cakes and plum puddings do not contain the plum fruit now known by that name.

@Lauri A ~ ~ funny you should comment on that expression. I had never heard it, except the times that I knew it to be true. So when I started dating “this guy” and he said that that, I believed him, I mean, afterall , I really liked him. Notice I’m not saying my age as I wasn’t young at that time! Anyway after about the 10th time, I questioned him about all these books he had read - then I found out ! Little embarrassed on my part, mostly all lying in his part!

Ron, have you every tried Lactaid? Yesterday I whipped egg whites by hand using a whisk and it took a LOONNGG time. Justine is very dedicated to whisk eggs with 1820's equipment. I crochet and my favorite sweater pattern takes just under 2000 yards for a size 2X. That is actually a good price for hand died yarn. Thank you Kandye for the tour of your store.

Well done, Ron for doing this tasting alone. You speak so well and are an excellent cake describer. Caraway seeds are a wonderful, and now much underused, ingredient. Here in the UK we have a traditional medieval recipe for Cattern cakes, which were made, especially by lacemakers, for St Catherine's Day/Catterntide on 25th November. I make them every year and they are delicious. As for plums, our old plum pudding, eaten at Christmas, has no plums in it either. As someone else said, 'plum' was once a word used for currants, which is a bit confusing to us now. Thank you for another wonderful video. I loved the sound of the rain.

Used the fireplace until we found a good Home Comfort wood cook stove. Milked two cows twice daily made butter. Sold butter and eggs, cakes , pies , bread , rolls etc.. made lye soap. Raised live stock to butcher. We had a feather bed not straw. Love the videos!!

I am also lactose intolerant. I have used goat's milk for years, but just recently found out that sheep's milk doesn't have the issues with a "goaty" flavor. It's also supposed to be a little sweeter than cow's milk. Just a thought...if your future property is wooded, goats might work...if you have pasture, sheep would work. From experience, I know sheep respect fences much more than goats do.

Nicely done! Thanks 4 sharing your time/talents with us all! Ron, maybe set a nice little carrot on; 'Alfred's lap' to make up 4 calling him; 'Albert' so many times! LOL! Justine would have teased you about that one. I find the pound cake thins interesting. Looks like a nice treat to pack away on a trek, to keep you caloried up! I wonder if you have rhubarb on your lot. Rhubard, cut into inch sizes with water and brown sugar simmered to a soft boil for about a 20 minute period, then used as a glaze over cakes or just with some cream or with strawberries is; YUM! Justine, I could just smell the teas you enjoyed so much! Thanks 4 the tour and nice rocking horse Ron! Health and God Bless! :)

6:35 In old recipes, interestingly, "currant" is actually meant to refer to a type of small raisin (sometimes called "Zante currants"). The berries that we call "currants" today got that name more recently (maybe because someone thought they were similar in some way?)
