Three tips to augment Mike's great tutorial here. 1. To allow the transport to run so you can hear the playback metronome in an empty project, be sure to un-check 'Stop at Project End' under Options in the Track View menu. 2. When drawing tempo changes, set the snap resolution to match the smallest timing interval in the music, regardless of the tempo - e.g. an 8th in Mike's drum pattern example would do the trick; having tempo changes in between notes isn't musically necessary, and may cause audio-stretching artifacts or problems with tempo-synced plugins. 3. Before enabling Clip Follows Project in the Audiosnap palette, be sure to open the drop-down to the right of the option and select 'Auto stretch' as the mode. Other options will cause the clip to immediately stretch to fit the current tempo before the tempo is changed which is likely to produce undesirable results.

i love your accent - and of course the amazing tutorials for cakewalk. every time you sign in i understand you to say, "hi i'm mike and i hope you will." the first thing that pops into my head is, "will what?" anyway, i'm definitely a noobie with recording software, but did plenty of sessions back in the reel to reel 16 track studio days as a musician - the blessed 80s. up to now i've just used audacity. but i'm getting into recording at home now and i thank you for your help.

AudioSnap is a great tool. If you have an existing audio recording that was not recorded to a metronome, you can let AudioSnap analyse the tempo of the clip, so your tempo map will follow the audio. If you now add midi instruments, you can use quantize and all other great midi features and it will always fit.

Thank you Mike! As always your Cakewalk lessons are very helpful. I pretty much use Cakewalk for all the one man band covers here on KZbin and I key in the tempo using the mouse and then use tempo view specially to adjust midi drum tracks to the actual reference track I am intending to cover. Though visually sometimes a little tedious, it gets the job done when the bpm hovers around a particular number in a song rather than being fixed.

Nice! Just finishing a song where I had to figure this out for myself. Did not know about the tempo view. THAT really would have helped in my project. Also working with some poly-rhythmic sections and it appears at first glance Cakewalk is not set up for that. Discovered (not unexpectedly) most of the free drum plug ins are limited to grooves/rhythms of 4/4 and 6/8, so much hand programming required for "strange" time signatures like 5/4. Thanks for this video and the "time" you took to produce it. Big help!

One small complaint I have with cakewalk is how it displays the tracks when tempo changes mid song are involved, basically it is keeping the visual spacing of the beat markers constant and then scaling the actual time ruler to deal with the tempo change, I much prefer the way pro tools deals with tempo changes by keeping the actual time ruler scale the same throughout and then adjusting the beat marker spacing when a tempo change occurs, that way a after a tempo increase a 1/4 note in midi will look smaller on the screen as well as sounding shorter (as it should if the tempo increases). It also means that in tempo changes in cakewalk the play head will visibly speed up/slow down as they happen which is a bit off putting to me. Its nothing that actually affects me doing anything in cakewalk, just a visual thing I wish would change

Your videos on Cakewalk are the best I've come across - clear, straightforward and practical. I learned a lot about tempo here, but I still have a question.... I often record an improvisation without setting up a tempo, so that it can flow freely. But then I like to produce a score. Can I add tempo changes real time so that the score automatically produced in Cakewalk from a midi track accurately maps to the beat? Thanks!
@August_Hall3 жыл бұрын
so the explanation is soooo clear and perfect and it worked for one track, but as soon as I used it for the one song I really needed to increase speed by 5 BPM it all went tits up. The vocals went at right speed but not trumpets. Does having multiple clips in the same track affect the way it is processed... i am very new to all of this!

I'm plagued by timing issues in my songs. If I quantize drums so they're better on the grid, they don't match the timing of my audio tracks. This instructional video has given me more ideas. This topic is quite important to me. I typically lay down a guitar track by following a metronome click track, but of course it's not perfectly in time with it. Then, when I lay down a drum track, I try to follow the guitar track, which is not exactly on the metronome beat. Ahhh! People have told me my music is pretty good, except the rhythm is frequently off a little bit.

Thank you for your excellent super-clear videos. Pardon my long preample. "Cut Time" or 2/2 time signature can be confusing at times. There are two beats per bar and a half note has the duration of a full beat. Comparing with 4/4 signature, the quarter note has the duration of a beat. When I load an audio track, and set a tempo 150 bpm in a 2/2 signature, it plays back identically for 4/4 signature at the same 150 bpm. In 2/2, I then see twice the number of bars as expected because it takes double the number of bars to span the same time period. Finally here is my question... In 2/2, the BandLab metronome clicks sound on half-notes as expected at 75 per minute. However, the displayed tempo above the tracks is counting quarter notes at 150 bpm! This seems inconsistent with what I hear and the definition of a "beat". Having said that, the BandLab is advantageous because it iseems consitent with a more familiar 4/4 time signature. Is it a "bug" or a feature. I trust your reply much more than from other KZbinrs who have superficial knowledge and experience but don't recognize their limitations ! Thank you.

I will have a hard time remembering all the shortcuts from dozens of videos. I hope all those can be found in the menus somewhere, too. Another way to get AudioSnap is to go to the inspector on the left, click on the clips tab and there on AudioSnap. What you could clarify in a future video is how the key setting (the project's key v AudioSnap key) is influencing the audio tracks. I never understood it.

Peter, love your Cakewalk tutorials thanks and hope you stay with it I plan on it. I have a problem I found some old recordings of my late Father recorded 20 or 30 years ago. He was playing solo. I wanted to play with him again so I set it all up in audio with cakewalk. It sounded good all except he would slow down to get the licks in which make me have to attempt to slow down to match thus didn't sound very good. Is there anyway I can straighten his timing out with cakewalk and stay in tempo. I can adapt to a point but overall it sound really bad. Do you have any suggestions? I'm no pro at cakewalk but pretty good musician. thanks man
