How to grow caladiums! Caladiums are a great addition to the garden. These easy to grow plants offer an exotic and lush appeal wherever they are placed and they are fairly fuss free given a few simple needs are met. In this video I cover how to plant caladiums bulbs, how to grow caladiums, how to water caladiums, how to fertilize caladiums, how to grow caladiums indoors and how to winterize caladiums ( how to store caladium bulbs ) Oh, and pest and problems with caladiums. Growing caladiums is fairly simple outdoors. Give caladiums lots of water in a rich and well drained soil that is slightly acidic in the part shade to shade and they will do the rest. Growing caladiums indoors is a little bit more tricky as they prefer a warm environment. Caladiums as houseplants is a possibility though, just be more cautious with watering and give lots and lots of light. When planting caladium bulbs it is important to remember to only plant a bulb on it's side if you are planting very shallow! Planting a bulb sideways more than a couple inches below the soil will likely just kill it. In general when planting caladium bulbs, the flat side goes down, and the pointy side goes up. In the example in my video I had to plant them sideways because many of them were growing from the same side as their roots, which isn't normal but happens sometimes when bulbs are mass divided.... and done so sloppily. Like I said, growing caladiums indoors and/or growing caladiums as houseplants isn't as simple. The houseplant care is different from outside in that they wont want to be watered as often since the temperatures are cooler than the warmer temps they prefer to have. Storing caladium bulbs is easy! Just dig them up, clean them off ( dirt, roots and foliage ) allow to dry for a few days and store in a breathable container, place it in a dark and dry location for at least 12 weeks then replant. How to propagate caladiums is also simple. Typically it is easiest to just divide the bulbs every year or so, making sure to keep 3 eyes on each bulb. Caladiums can be grown from seed which can be harvested from the spent and dried flower heads on the plants. Caladiums are easy to grow and rewarding plants for the home and garden!

Advice for indoors : you will likely need to stake the leaves of the medium and tall varieties. Put the stake before planting the tuber so you don't poke a hole in the tuber ( can make it rot ). If the plant is already grown, sneak the stake(s) at the edge of the pot. Wonderful houseplant. When at rest, you can unpot and keep the tubers in a paper bag at 20°C ( room temperature ). Mine all grew back when I planted them in early April.

Love your video! I just bought my first caladium about a month ago. Love this beautiful plant. Mine is the beautiful green with burgundy veins. I live in the mid section of NC and these beauties would never survive the winter. Had the pot outside and moved them in recently, about a month ago, September 28th and it did great and then wilted and the stems would bend and seemed broken. I noticed today that one leaf had a white mold looking fugus on one of the plants. I took it outside and decided to split up the plant. To my surprise I found some bulbs not attached to the existing plant and separated the living, (hopefully) into 2 separate pots and of course set beside each other. Plants love to be together, as you know:) I have a 22 year old Philodendron that has produced so many babies and they love to touch each other. Makes since:). Now I have replanted the caladium into 2 different pots and I have compost soil that I used as a base and co mingled the existing soil and it had some misc. roots with soil. I found about 4 bulbs, maybe more but did not want to manipulate the soil too much. They have roots but there is a dark orange color on the bulb, is that normal?. What should I do? One is really big, looks like a ginger root. LOL. Should I plant each in a planter and hope for the best?

Well Jeff I learn something new I didn't realize you could easily grow these from seed I always cut the flower off cuz someone told me that it takes energy away from making leaves to produce a mature seed set. But I guess we could even hand-pollinate them and that's how they get all these different varieties that we see every year. Might be kind of fun to try to grow them and see what happens

The one thing I learned from Rick's orchids is that there's mobile and immobile nutrients in plants not just orchids. So that's why I wait because I think the guy I used to listen to on the radio gardening show on Sundays also said leave the leaves on the plant until they're completely dried up. That's probably why he said that is because the mobile nutrients go back down into the bulb. When I bring mine into the house in the fall I enjoy them because they're already in pots not in the ground and when the leaves are completely dead and dry I cut them off and put them to rest. The other thing when I used to plant them in the ground if the soil gets below 60 degrees and it's rainy in August kind of rainy and cold they will start to rot in the ground and it's so hard to pull them out of the ground when they still look so pretty. You can also cut some of the leaves off and put them in a vase to enjoy. But I just did with the guy on the radio said lay them on the sidewalk and let them dry out same goes for amaryllis lay them on the sidewalk in the Sun let those mobile nutrients go back down into the bulk then cut the leaves off but... Apparently you've had great success with your way so it just proves there's more than one way what's that old saying to skin a cat I wonder where that saying came from sounds horrible! No wonder there were rats spreading the plague in Europe they didn't like cats very much! I hope your shoulder is healing well I keep you in my prayers

@TropicalPlantParty I've tried growing them both inside and outside. I bought 11 of them this spring but wasn't able to pay much attention to them - or any of my plants, really - because my husband was in the hospital for over a week with heart and kidney failure. When they all died I figured it was because of neglect. So I bought 11 more of them when he came home (Both times from WalMart. I don't know if that may be part of the problem, but thought I'd mention it.). I was able to pay more attention to them then, but I'll be doggone if those didn't die, too. I only water my plants when the soil is dry up to my first knuckle (or is it my 2nd one? It's my middle knuckle, whichever number you call it. lol). Also, I use Espoma Organic Indoor Houseplant Food (liquid fertilizer - I love it! :) ) every 1 - 2 weeks, or once a month, depending on the plant. Inside, I had them in a kinda medium indirect light. Outside, they were in bright indirect light. Maybe they just hate me? LOL TIA for any advice you can offer me. 😊

Hope you are doing Beyer better.... to the caladium video from last year... My caladiums made it through the winter just dormant in their pots that I bought them in or planted the bulbs in. Just put a little water every once in awhile on the top inch of the soil so the caladiums didn't think they were growing in a desert or sleeping or taking their winter hibernation in the desert... By the way when I substituted after teaching for 32 years in a second grade class they were studying the desert. Did you know that desert animals hibernate in the summer? I was almost 70 years old at the time and I was surprised delightedly to find out I learned something new that day really new! Oh well back 2 caladiums... They are one of my favorite summer plants besides the alocasia and colocasia which AR related to caladium... Thanks for this video no matter how much you know about a plant somebody else might teach you something new and you always do thanks! God bless and hope you're doing better

I bought a pot of white and red ones. The white ended up having fungus knats, I think. I put it outside and sprayed it down. It’s died a couple times from lack of water but she always bounces back. The red one I’ve kept on my porch inside. Even with my cat eating a couple of her leaves she’s doing great. My cat has eaten so many house plants she should honestly be dead. She has a gut of steal. Do you ever have issues with your cats eating plants?
@TropicalPlantParty
@TropicalPlantParty 5 жыл бұрын
That's a great testament to how strong they are! Yes, my cats will eat any houseplant. That is part of the reason I keep most of my plants in my garage during winter. I have used pinecones to keep them out of the pots, works great! And spraying the plants with deterrents kind of helped, but eventually I just moved the plants out because I got tired of spraying them.

Okay, I have some of these in two pots/planters. They were small when I purchased them but now they have grown quit large and are beginning to droop from the weight? Do I need to replant them in a larger pot, or just prop them up with something? I don't know what I should do at this point. Any advise would be helpful. Thanks!

My Caladium is an indoor plant. I live in an area where it is fairly warm year round. My plant is starting to droop. Should I cut the foliage and leave the tubors in the pot? Or should I remove them from the pot and put them in perlite? Also, when should I replant?

If the Calladium is in a pot, can I just cut the foliage off and leave them indoors in the same pot?

In what part of the world do you live? I live in zone 7, I think, (it’s the highest zone in the U.S.) we stay kinda dry here and the native soil is mostly clay but I’ve added plenty great organic soil. I’m just not sure if they will be happy enough outside.

I know they say they should be planted in part sun to shade but mine always stretch to get sun. They grow best in containers here, they come back weak the second year if they are planted in ground (damn nematodes). You know they have a big Caladium festival in central Florida (Lake Placid), right? I think it is in a week or two.

Yeah, the ones under the Alexander plan are getting a lot of afternoon sun. ... they are also on drip which can make a difference. We will see how they do when temps get in the triple digits though. Caladium festival!? I want to go!

I made a beautiful planter of Caladiums with beautiful white & pink petunias……thanks to you! I live in zone 6a-6b like you....can I bring the caladiums in for Winter?? Do I need a grow room with lights & humidity? My new winter project :)
@TropicalPlantParty

Hi Kathleen! They are easiest to let go dormant in winter in a dry and dark spot in the house and then just put them back in the sun when it's starting to warm up in spring with a gentle drink of water.

I am purchasing my first batch of caladiums and getting about 100 bulbs/tubers soon. They are mixed varieties but no names so it will be a complete surprise. I wanted to do a Caladium KZbin growing project and wanted to send them out to some of my KZbin buddies so that we could all grow them together and see what varieties we get. Are you in? If so Instagram me your address and as soon as I get them I will send some your way! PS I just ordered the Thai beauty online it is crazy insane! I can’t wait to get it!

Hey you! Of course! I'll dm you right now, what a great idea! Thai beauty is so pretty! Crazy timing btw! I was just looking at my calendars to decide when I should pot up and start my 'frog in blender' bulbs. Since I cant safely move the plants back out until late april or may I know I should wait till march, but I miss them and want them back in my life! 🤣😂😅

Zone 7 here.....I have a somewhat shady spot where I just planted Daffodil and would like to plant Caladium over top of them when the daffodil are finished for the season-- sometime in April or early May. Are caladium toxic to other plants nearby and how deep will their roots go? My research shows that daffodil bulb does not need much water after their leaves have expired.
@TropicalPlantParty
@TropicalPlantParty 4 жыл бұрын
I don't know about them being toxic to other plants but I have never had issues with that or read anything about it. They have fairly shallow roots, should do well above daffodils except they like a lot more water than the daffodils will need.
