Teens Behind Bars - A Look Back at Ricky's Story & What Happened Years Later

From our archive: Elsewhere on our channel we've featured interviews with teenager Ricky during his time in juvenile detention back in 2009. Ricky was in detention on a bench warrant and had spent a lot of time behind bars as a young kid. In this video, we piece together Ricky's whole story from the time he arrived at the Lake County Juvenile Detention Center until the day he went before the judge to learn if he would finally be released from lockup. During our time with Ricky, he was very candid and honest about the issues that landed him behind bars in the past: gang activity and getting in with the wrong crowd as a youngster. He also discussed his family life and what he thought kids needed to succeed in life.

​@@amfwelsh There's a 2021 news article of him in Indiana who caused hundred of dollars in damage to steal a $1.29 lighter. His mugshot appeared on some bookings site on October 23, 2021 for Failure to Appear in court.

Man... to find out he passed away actually shocked and hurt me, I honestly felt he was going to become someone that not only succeeds but was going to triumph with long life... R.I.P. Ricky, I might not know you but you're story was my life 37 yrs ago at the age of 11 through the boys home's and then H.M. There’s a good Oz🇦🇺 movie about Pentridge called Every Night Every Night & it’s written by old mate Ray Mooney about his time in Pentridge while locked up with Chris Dale Flannery (the Hitman who couldn’t aim straight) & the actor who is in it is David Field, “Chopper/ Keithy George & Acko in Two Hands”. Where does it say Ricky made the wrong choice? He spent 12 years out of the system before he died. Now take your judgements and piss off. This is why the rest of the world hates Americans.

If he stops hanging out with the ones who kept him in trouble he will do better. He will follow bad influences if he is around them. Likewise he will emulate good behaviors if he hangs around positive influences. If he can stay away from the negative and seeks out the positive he will do much better. He can do it but he has to be willing to cut ties with the negative. That's where success lies.

Oh boy. It is so sad he passed away. People sadly don't understand that and how the situation you grow up forms your perception, thinking and at the end acting. Just someone who doesn't understand how socialisation works would claim that there are people who grew up under similar conditions and didn't become criminal. If something comes out different, it is because of different conditions. Just not knowing these in detail, doesn't mean there are none.

Unfortunately Ricky is institutionalized. U can tell. To only have 4 months left then runaway he mentally is in fear of the unknown outside and he seems a lot more comfortable locked up. Guaranteed meals place to sleep and people to talk to . It’s sad .

May he rest in peace. What a hard life to endure at such young age. No one should go through that. The system failed this kid. He had no food in his stomach, no one to care for him. It was either fight or flight. He did what he had to. I read he's left behind a kid. Hope that kid's story turns out different.

He talks smart, he seem to be smart, but blaming his anger issues is lame. If you are smart you'll never come back. You'll learn to restrain yourself. He is being weak, he is weak and doesn't think... he'll be back and forth the rest of his life in jail... no way to live. Sooner or later you'll always get caught.

Apparently he had his grandma but no grandpa and she raised his mom or dad who was a criminal, married a criminal and had no concern for their baby so that doesn’t say much for her either.

@KoalaBeer - sadly, we don't know what happened. We have been told he stayed out of the system so that is a very good sign that he hopefully had some good years before he passed away. We're also told he had a son. We hope he enjoyed what little time he had as a dad. Thank you for watching his story.

Gosh, I wish I knew what happened to Ricky. Did he get married? Did he leave the gang? Did he have any kids? Did he get a welding job or did he go back to prison?

@cindyhuff9041 - thank you for asking. We do know he had a little boy and as far as we know, he never went back to prison. Sadly, we were stunned to learn he died so young after working so hard to turn his life around. Tragic on every level.

I recall seeing Ricardo on MSNBC Lockup when they were covering the juvenile system in Indiana. Apparently, he started acting right once he got released from LCJC, but it's a shame that he died.

So apparently his dad died unexpectedly in 2017 too. Rickie unfortunately was headed back to prison anyway for robbing a gas station in 2021.
