Behind Bars Documentary: Cradle to Jail - Devon, Ken & Kentrell & Life After Juvie

In this series episode, we look back at the stories of Devon, Kenneth and Kentrell as these teenagers were arrested and brought into a juvenile detention center following arrest. Originally filmed in 2008, we see what each teen went through during their time in detention, their visits with family members, and ultimately, their juvenile court hearings where they would learn their fate.
The end of this video has a 2024 update on each teen and what happened to them following their time in detention as kids.

Omg yes same I been in and out of court rooms, police cars ,probation offices, drug court etc from 12-17 I got pregnant while on the run at 17 years old I wide up turning myself in what made me change was feeling my daughter kick for the first time I was serving a 7 year bid lucky my judge had a heart and sent to a group home with other teens who were troubled and pregnant and I never look back since I currently am 20 with four kiddos ,Married , a beautiful home I also am in college majoring criminal justice to become a trouble teens advocate ❤

I was sad to learn that Devon OD’ed it really made me sad. I’m glad that one of the brothers did in fact turn his life around. I hope the second brother gets it together, also.

My heart breaks for families in the circumstances where they live in a toxic environment where violence is prominent. There needs to be rehousing programs and transitional rehab for rentry for these young individuals.

Some kids are born without a hope in hell of escaping going to prison or dying on the streets. Years ago I watched a Werner Herzog documentary about teens on death row in Texas. One 17 y/o young man was sentenced to death for shooting the attendant of a cleaners during a robbery. He committed the robbery to get money for his crack addicted mother in jail. His victim, Leta Ann Wilkerson was a Mom, equally struggling to care for her two small kids. An absolutely horrendous crime committed by someone who was born to drug addicts, sexually assaulted by Moms many boyfriends, brutalized by adults and left to fend for himself. Watching the doc he was like the abused dog who is put to sleep for finally biting someone. Glen McGinnis. Sent to death row at 17 and executed in 2000 at 27. And I can't forget his name.

As the saying goes, children aren't born bad. And recent juvenile brain research tells us so much about how the mind develops. It might not be an excuse for terrible crimes, but it certainly gives us a window into how the unthinkable can happen. I think a program for teens when they get out like maybe like they do in AA have like a sponser to help u stay out of trouble and give feedback to help them stay out of trouble

Young kids don't realize they're there and the courts getting in trouble and none of the friends are there. They don't have no friends being in a gang. They're not your friends if they were your friends they wanna make you do the time. Don't do the crime. Everybody sends everybody seems to feel sorry for people when they cry, especially the parents and don't realize they heard other individuals. They get what they bargain.

​@@keimyb7147 his mom didn't have control over him either though. The judge said a factor for the brothers was a lack of supervision. He straight up moved out his mom's house to live on his own despite being on probation. Their support systems are equal.

He up and decided to move while on probation and ended up getting pew pew. Where was the support system before the hearing? We need to be honest here.

I think the prosecutor is mean I know she has job to do but instead of putting them down maybe trying to find ways to help them cuz keep reminding them how bad they are doesn’t help they need positive feedback and ways to prevent them getting in trouble again I know what it’s like to be told over and over how bad I was but I had to figure it out in my own before I realized what I had to do to change a person can’t be forced to change they have to do it on their own I made mistakes that have mess my life up but I can’t change what I done all I can do is change my ways to prevent from doing it again it was hard but I did it

Foster mom huh? You are exactly who I & my colleagues rallied against to protect kids!! All for the checks! Crime isn't always a choice when you are living in poverty, but you don't seem to care since you clearly are unaware of who ends up in foster care, "foster mom." You remind me of the most abusive so-called "foster moms," in it simply for CHECKS!!
