In their big fight Mei literally had to say she made those decisions on her own accord for her mom to start to understand that she wants to do different things now and start to let go of the idea that she needs to fully depend on her to be okay.

@themememaster78448 ай бұрын
@@XyraStarI was thinking the same thing but I think it works on both levels. Her mom means what she says, and she means it in a positive way, but the upsetting part is that she attributes perfection to being something like what beautiful describes. It's not that she is trying to avoid complementing her it's that she thinks that she is perfect and that anything less would be unappealing. I'm suprised they took this scene out of the movie given how significant it is to setting up Mei and her Mom's characterization

@kaitlinschneider5092 жыл бұрын
@@mocha7707 I mean, I think it can be both. Her mother definitely enforced a standard of perfection onto her, but she was doing it out of love because she thought she could protect her daughter from having to feel like she did I guess? She wasn’t doing it out of malicious intent, so it’s still sweet in its own way. And by the end of the movie the mother accepted that Mei Mei wanted to keep her red panda, so she showed personal growth since this moment and I think that’s what ultimately separates it. Hovever, that doesn’t change that she was forcing standards of perfection onto her from a young age. It doesn’t make it right or okay, but at least she was satisfied with who her daughter was (from what she saw) because we’ve all seen plenty of Disney moms who are never satisfied with their children’s efforts. Both perspectives are important.

@@briannalovely-hz1pz You can have one Narcissistic trait and not have the disorder, You need to score multiple traits to be consider a clinical Narcissist. In the case of Ming she is more of an Helicopter Parent than a Narcissistic parent. Narcissistic parents love their kids conditionally, don´t see their kids as individuals but as extensions of themselves, are not capable of taking accountability of the damage they cause since they have no capacity for empathy, they deflect and shift the blames and they are perpetual victims. Helicopter Parents on the other hand are controlling not because they don´t see their kids as their own people but because they are extremely anxious people that want their kids to always do well and always be safe to a point that is detrimental and toxic and ends up backfiring. It comes from a place of love and care but it ends up being harmful. Plus the explanation of why Ming is so obsessed with perfection is not because she is a Narcissist but because, Just like Mei, She grew up having to behave perfectly walking on eggshells to please her mother, And when you have untreated trauma and unaddressed baggage because of your parents you end up repeating their harmful behavior when you have kids. This is why no one should have kids before healing their childhood trauma. and don´t get me wrong, I´m not justifying her, she is not a good parent most of the time, I´m just pointing out that the reason of her bad parenting is not narcissism.

But that was still a very villainous "perfect". Like... seeing your child in a servant role and being happy about it is already alarming on its own xD
@Wandervenn Жыл бұрын
I mean... it was still terrible. Her daughter was perfect because she dressed her and trained her to be her standard of perfect. She wasnt saying her daughter was perfect, she was essentially saying that she herself did a perfect job with her daughter. Her daughter is just an extension of her own efforts at that point.

@@Wandervennoh my god you re reading it too much is actually hurt lmao it's just asian mom moment
@Wandervenn Жыл бұрын
@@KABLAMMATS Reading it too much? It is literally the plot of the movie. This is a deleted scene not a short. The point of the scene is to further show the toxicity of Mei's relationship with her mom just like in the movie with the scene where Mei has to give up her social life to please her mom by working with her. It isnt reading into it when it is the actual heart of the movie's conflict.
@tnecniw Жыл бұрын
Not… really? The point of the scene (Beyond being funny) would be to show that Ming is a woman with a very specific view of how things should be. She isn’t toxic towards Mei-Mei, at the least not intentionally. Heck, half the time she is right… She just wants the best for her daughter, even if it does smother her.

I like how her tearing the sheet and stepping over the table in a dress showed her impatient, quick to anger, and more childish side while her methodical fast set up showed her perfectionism. The "your perfect" bit was the positive affirmation she never got as a child but the micro management of her daughter was her childhood. Everything in this short foreshadows her parenting style. Even the dad allowing his wife to do her thing and just being there to support everyone in the end shows his parenting style.

I love this scene so much. You can tell that mom really does love Mei Mei, but at the same time unintentionally being controlling and setting expectations of perfection (even if that wasn’t her intent). Calling her “perfect” while fixing her hair, posture, and surrounding area hits as both loving and as foreshadowing for future consequences. I love it. It also unlocked a memory I had as my Asian mom did the exact same thing.

In what world is the mom "genuinely believing" here? You are falling for the trap of narcissism: you interpret what they say through your own lense instead of theirs. When the mom said Meimei was perfect, she was referring to her own staging, planning, posing, etc. Meimei was a prop, nothing more. The mom was patting herself on the back while forcing her daughter to serve her... all showcasing how "perfect" mom is, allowing her to say it, which in turn allowed Meimei to believe she had any merit when in actuality she was an obedient prop and as soon as she deviates she will be scum and trash out to tarnish the mother she claimed to have loved... Tl;dr tell me you've never dealt with this without telling me...
@clarefung3268 Жыл бұрын
@Undomaranel Well, we each have our own interpretations. According to your saying, a parent complementing your grades is the equivalent of complementing themselves for raising you correctly. I just feel that Ming wouldn't be the kind of people to say they love someone, rather use their actions as a love language. She's fussing over how they look and complementing meimei is her way of showing she cares. I can't deny your interpretations is also one way you can look at this situation, but the same goes for you. It really depends on how it resonates with you.
@displeed20 Жыл бұрын
this is Just top notch narcisme
@Undomaranel Жыл бұрын
@@clarefung3268 Wrong. A parent congratulating you on your hard effort and achievements is a far cry from an impersonal "perfect" as you're kneeling to them. Context matters, not just the act, or else every love making session is also rape.
