This was a great and informative podcast! Thank you for posting it. I have been wrestling with this identical calcium crystal situation for a while now and recently d/l the Orenda app to try to help me but I am not having much luck 😞 The 16,000 gallon pool specifics are: pH trying to keep it below 8, Calcium 600 (I know - we are in Nevada) TotAlkalinty 180, CYA 60, totalCL 5, FreeCL 1. Salt 3400 (as recommended by CMP Powerclean salt cell). I did add 30 lbs of boric acid but that has not seemed to help much. I am not sure how best to proceed so any suggestions or advice would be most welcome! Cheers!

I have my pump on a separate timer than my salt cell. Salt cell programmed to shut off an hour prior to pump so that water flows through shut off salt cell for at least an hour. I don’t get any scale on cell anymore (along with LSI balance of course) SC1000 and CV700 are great products btw. Thank you for all the information.

Orenda is a temporary fix. How high of calcium needs to be to drain?

Salt pool in AZ with periodic flaking... Salt 3900 CYA 50 Calcium 620 Alkalinity 50 pH 7.6 Temp about 76 to 78 F

What tds/salt are you putting in the Orenda calculator assuming salt is at 3600 ppm

You would put in the TDS, so salt + calcium + alkalinity + CYA

With a new surface the calcium levels are through the roof and only come down with time and dilution

They shouldn’t be through the roof. The calcium level should be tap water CH + added calcium. Hopefully the water never got aggressive (below -0.30 on the LSI, red on the Orenda Calculator), because aggressive water can dissolve calcium from the cement and increase CH levels.

Keep your alkalinity below 80 and balance the LSI at that level.

It’s easier to see in the spa because the spa is a smaller body of contained water. Similar to a cup of sand in spa versus a cup of sand in the pool. Much more noticeable in the spa.

Well yes, that and most pools plumb their return lines to the spa first, so it’s the most likely place to get the flakes anyway.

Lower alkalinity to about 60 ppm and increase calcium up to 300+. Chelate calcium with SC-1000 and it should begin to clear up.
