High Phosphates In Pool - What To Do About It?

Very good explanation, accurate, and simply explained. I’m not a pool expert, but I am a biochemical engineer, and a pool is essentially a CSTBR if not managed correctly. I am all about a simple approach to maintain a pool, grounded in the science. I used to be steadfast that phosphates were not worth removing and that an algae bloom was an indicator I wasn’t managing pH and Chlorine levels well enough. But as I’ve owned my pool and phosphates have climbed to 1000-ppb over 4 years, it’s become increasingly more difficult to keep algae out. 1/5th of a $30 bottle of phosphate reducer, and 20 minutes of time brought my levels back to zero. It’s so simple.

Trust me, your assessment is right. My pool store has told me over and over that 1000 phosphate level is fine, when I’m seeing that this is the reason using yellow out and shock on yellow algae is not working.

Another potential source of phosphates is the very tap water you use to fill the pool. Test your water source and consider using a filter on the hose if it tests high If you add phosphate remover to the skimmer if will quickly concentrate in the filter where it’s more effective Even though it’s not necessary to keep your phosphates at zero it’s pretty easy to to so. Just add 1 oz every 1-2 weeks as prevention instead of letting it get high before treating it

My pool looked fine, but the person at the pool store told me that I had high levels of phosphates, and as soon as I put it in the skimmer the next day, it was cloudy which made me really upset, but after watching this video, I actually googled, and this was the first video that came up on the search After listening it makes perfect sense now. Very well explained. I can't keep a good chlorine reading. I was told it was because phosphate reading is about 1000. If I use phosphate remover will I get a good chlorine reading when I add chlorine again before I remove the altered phosphates from the pool?

My pool has clear water but algae on the plaster wall surfaces. I robot vac every day and the chlorine levels are around 10 ppm now. (Maybe shocking the pool is necessary. ) The ph is 7.4. It seems the algae has formed a resistant layer and lives in the plaster. I am trying to eliminate a phosphate level of about 700 ppb and used the testing kit you feature in the video. It is easy to use. One issue is trying to find out how concentrated the various phosphate removers are and which are actually concentrated at all.

Thank you, excellent information.. my level is 1200 ppb, with very little algae growth on a few areas of the walls, oil looks great.. free chlorine 4.5, they want me to use NoPhos 103oz, run pump for 48 hrs straight $$$😮..uh, no -not doing that I’ll be broke, what do you recommend, just add when pump is on normal cycle, I did buy new filters, should I not install them until I treat and run ? ..appreciate any help

With all the phosphates going into the filter (I have DE), won't the filter eventually redistribute it back into the pool? Should the pool filter be cleaned; if so, when in the process should it be cleaned? What kind of common pool chemical contribute to increased phosphates in pools?

My Summer Waves above ground pool is running around 4000 bbl after filling this year. Last year was fine. Nobody has any idea why it's so high and the water from the tap if was filled with is normal. The phosphate remover I bought from our local pool store make no difference so I am trying again.

Will my sand filter properly remove the phosphates after adding Super Phos or, as I was told be pool store, must you vacuum the pool floor after 24 hrs filter on 24 off or so? I typically use a robotic pool bot to clean bottom and filter on top of my sand filter. I was told that after treating, the phosphates will sink to bot of pool and must be vacuumed. My pool bot’s filter basket is not fine enough and concerned running it after treatment is just kicking phosphates back into the broader pool environment. Please comment! Thanks.

Lanthinum based phosphate remover causes a pretty small and light precipitate that mostly gets caught in the filter, but some can fall out to the bottom of the pool. Aluminum based chemistry caused larger sludgy precipitations that often fall out faster and usually make it to the bottom of the pool before they make it to the filter. If after adding phosphate reducer your water is cloudy and the filter isn’t doing a fast enough job of clarifying it, you can add a floc (clarifier), which will help the small cloudy particles stick together and either fall to the bottom or filter out more easily. I have a DE filter and DE is really good at removing very fine particulate, so this is not something I’ve had to do, but it may be helpful for a sand filter and robot combo.

Hi, my pool chlorine level is perfect and my PH level is perfect but i am still getting algae in my pool. What do you suggest i do please? Is it phosphates in my pool even though my chlorine & ph are fine? Many thanks

It could be, you'll need to test for phosphates to check. Also make sure your Cyanuric Acid (stabiliser) levels aren't too high. The higher the Cyanuric Acid level, the less effective chlorine is in the water. So if you have a Cyanuric level of say 100 and a Chlorine level of 3, that 3 isn't a true 3 and can lead to algae issues.

Green to clean is ammonium sulfate fertilizer this s*** did they sell at Leslie's pool supply is $35 I can buy an entire bag of ammonium sulfate at the fertilizer store for $20 so why is the ammonium sulfate not getting rid of the algae if I'm using the phosphate also at the same time come on man help me out I'm having a hard time with my pool this year
