I think your teacher should give half his salary to Mr. Leonard !! The good thing about being a teacher is they get paid irrespective of how good or bad they are !! whereas any other job, you get fired if you are not good at it. Majority of teachers I have seen are horrible !! that is my experience. Then we have very very few people like Leonard who are exceptions to the rule. ! Mr. Leonard is a dream for most of math students. Thanks to you tube and thanks to Mr. Leonard's great heart which thought of recording and posting the videos. They are invaluable treasures of knowledge and great tools to have around one's knowledge belt, and save millions of students lives from destruction and hopeless existence due to those kind of teachers out there. God bless Leonard and his family !

He's testing for concavity by examining the second derivative on each side of the PIPs, which is correct. But he's calling this the "Second Derivative Test", which I think is incorrect. The Second Derivative Test is defined by most textbooks to be another way of testing for maxima and minima, NOT for concavity. The second derivative tells us concavity - that is a fact, but the Second Derivative Test is not a test for concavity - with the Second Derivative Test, we plug a point into the second derivative and if the result is positive then the curve is concave up at that point, meaning that point is a relative min. If the result is negative then the curve is concave down, meaning that point is a relative max. Of course, his textbook might define the Test differently but I would be surprised if that was the case.

X^4 is always concave up, yet at x=0, f''(x) touches zero. That's why you check to see if the second derivative changes sign across the possible inflection point.

for 22:16 how can x=-1 be a 0 when its undefined? should there just be no inflection point because there is no x value that will be 0?
@LunarPegasus757 жыл бұрын
W Nooristany you prob already know this but critical points include -where a derivative is equal to 0 -endpts -where the derivative does not exist or in other words makes the function undefined (which in this case was x =1)
@fibblasnubbla91056 жыл бұрын
Yes! I agree. This time the professor seems to have made a serious error. Not often but it happens. You cannot divide by zero as he just did finding the point x = 1 where f''(x) is 0. f''(x) is not 0 at x=1 - on the contrary, it approaches the assymptote x=1 infinitely. The funktion f(x) does in fact have an inflection point at x=1 but it does so in a strange way, notably in the sense that f'(x) ie the first derivative or slope of main function increases indefinitely as x approaches 1 (in order to have slope = "infinity"). x = 1 is a critical point vs 1st derivative in sense it is't defined at all. I am surprised no one in the class reacted....:) Apart from that I think this is a fabulous series.... Love

This point (1, 0) [Nota bene : not -1, 0] is undefined for derivative functions (first derivative g', second derivative g'' and so on), but it is perfectly defined for the original function g. g has no derivative at this point (because its slope is vertical).
