Excerpt from "Calcutta, Darjeeling & Bihar (1947)"
Rare amateur footage of East India.
Sir John Laing, heir to the Laing construction firm, was a deeply religious man. Several amateur films were taken documenting his missionary trips to South Asia. This film covers missions in parts of East India and is a valuable visual record of people and places visited by Sir John (sometimes seen in the film).

@Ranjit Tyagi Indians cannot keep blaming other factors for their lack of cleanliness and hygiene. Their disregard for organization and cleanliness shames the nation in front of the entire world. The worst culprits are the corrupt politicians and the poor leadership of the country. Infrastructure and cleanliness must be given priority if India is ever to escape its third world tag.

The reason why British led India looked so clean and disciplined is simple, the British led India was an Apartheid society like South Africa. The White dominated regions like Park Street in Kolkata, was clean with wide streets, good sewage system, whereas the Indian Bengali dominated region of Shyambazar lacked such services. Moreover the government was run by military governor generals who ruled with an iron hand, punishment was severe, so if any one threw trash or spat on the road, he would probably be beaten and fined very high. Which is why people didn't break laws, today there are some places in Kolkata, where cops get beaten for asking young men to wear a mask and helmet. Our politicians don't give a rat's ass about cleanliness or about us.

Priceless videos. It touched my heart and soul. I was born in Kolkata, went to boarding schools in Kalimpong (st. Joseph Convent) and Darjeeling (Mt Hermon School). Have so many family and friends in Bihar and Bengal. True about everything. Our grandfathers used to tell us of the advancements, renaissance center of Modern Indian thinking. Clean and educated. No blaming the politicians, its me and us who have destroyed it. Rampant dis-regard for nature. There is hope. The newer generations are much more aware then we ever were.

@@tapananilsamant2283 a lot of people have clearly pointed out that kolkata was more poised to be amongst the best cities in India when the british left due to its exisiting infrastructure at the time. Just look at the smiles on people's faces.. I mean today we feel that we have such an advanced technology and so many luxuries, but just see how happy people used to be back then.. And a modern day man enjoying an extravagant life style can never experience that.. They had nothing but they were happy, and today we have so much but we are miserable.. A modern day man is trapped in the race of life so deeply that life is no longer a source of joy for him and this is sad..

Life was hell in 1947 .... Literacy rate was 12 % Poverty was 70 % There was trauma of partition, very few industries, most worked on farms, millions of refugees were pouring from Bangladesh and Pakistan, people were starting from scratch. One man had to feed his wife and 5 kids, many couldn't afford college, everyone was walking even cycle was luxury, people ate mutton may be twice a month, no chicken. Only source was entertainment was may be a radio and movies twice a year. If you were a woman and your husband beats you, you just shut up and listen, less than 5 % women worked in offices. Outside city no marriage without dowry. If you are dalit, it was even worse. Even if there was there was dalit atrocity act, crime against Dalits were very common and no offenders got punished. In the 50s we were not food sufficient, had to import medicines. Outside India our image was poor, we were land of beggars and snake charmers. I don't even want to talk about how taboo intercaste marriages were.

Lol, yes, apparently having a college degree and doing a mindless 5 to 7 job for a corporation is the epitome of human existence, the point is not how much worse off they were materially but if they led their lives with deep conviction and meaning not meandering nihilism and existential angst. People not just in India but all around the world led much more meaningful, fulfilling lives than they do today, with their technology and online delivered bug meat dinner while bingeing netflix. But I guess that is completely lost on nincompoops like you.

@Rahul i agree with your point that it is us who vote for them, but more than that they become leader because of their power and money. They offer free stuff coz they know people in our country do not even get basic necessity, they make fake promises nd never fulfill them because they know if they do what will they promise for next time, how will they get more power and money. Also, i have to say not all of them are like this but those who are clean end up disappeared because of those with power, because of some leaders the independence of india was delayed by many years coz they were fighting for power. The constitution of india is weak because our governement is weak, people do not follow the laws coz they are not equal for everyone, our governement officers are one of the first to destroy laws and not follow them, people are not heard by the government. Cases takes years and generations to get solved and get justice.
