Well said. And history is full of epic moments, e.g. one LBL (?) where Austrian Georg Totschnig went solo at km 1, then the weather turned, nobody wanted to chase or to join, the poor guy didn't want to go solo any longer but forced by the DS to keep on going - I think it needed another 100k they had mercy and catched him. 😂

after the race he said he just didn't have the legs to do much more than hanging in there. And his failed attempt, despite creating a good gap initially, kind of showed it. He was also the only rider of a non world tour team. That is, the underdog among the four underdogs.

The Break really deserved that . Like one of them said after . They realised the gap was holding with the help of a nice tail wind and as long as they kept pounding away at those kinda speeds it was going to take something special to close the gap in the remaining distance.

Remember Taylor Phinney talking about the effects of the media training a young athlete does at the beginning of their careers, during the second Thereabouts documentary? I think at times it’s as much if not more so the audience that does the whining; it’s not all about winning, which is hard enough as Chris touches on for any rider, Ewan included. Let them be real, and know sitting on the Chesterfield means what we think we know is often miles away from what is going on in the races and on the team bus.

Off topic but at some point can you talk about what rider needs to go through mentally and physically to get back to the top after a big crash? We saw that Froomey never got there, you had trouble, Bernal is trying hard and now Vingegaard will give it a go. Remco fell in a ditch few years ago but was able to shake it off with some big one day and Vuelta wins.
@ShawnStradamus520
@ShawnStradamus520 25 күн бұрын
Of the examples that you mentioned, Froomey was already washed up before his terrible crash while the others were young enough at the time of their injuries to recover and get back to their best. It also has to do with what the specific injuries are…

@ShawnStradamus520 Froome was the defending tdf winner before the crash right. How was he already a wash up back then?
@ShawnStradamus520
@ShawnStradamus520 24 күн бұрын
@@AKG77 no, Froome’s last TDF GC win was 2017, which he won without winning a single stage. Then he was supplanted by G Thomas (‘18) on Team Sky (now Ineos) before his crash at Dauphine in spring 2019. But my point was that by then he had already really lost the ability to win road race stages, relying more on consistency and the strength of Team Sky (not to mention his generous inhaler use) to win on GC. His world tour swan song was winning the Giro (‘18) the year before his crash when he pulled a “Landis” out of his hat in a now legendary mountain raid on the penultimate stage after really having ridden notably subpar for the first 19 stages. He never won another world tour race after that…he’ll be 39 on May 20.

Caleb Ewan's crashes are, surely, a function of his riding style - extreme Cavendish with head over the front wheel. Therefore weight over the front wheel. Hence steering instability. While Cav should have retired last year after the crash after the chain jumped off what would have been his record-setting stage win, he ended up outlasting Ewan's generation of sprinters and surviving into the current era (in short, Cav saw about 5 generations of sprinters from the one's he displaced through his generation (Farrar), the next lot (Kittel)... Ewan.

With Molano I'm just not sure why UAE brought him, with some scenarios being possible in my head: - Their points and victory greadiness made them want to be able to compete for every stage? (Them over estimating Molano's potential Giro form and abilities against this field of opponents ) - They promised him he'd go and sticked with that promise. - Their arrogance thinking they wouldn't need him at all. - Them thinking Molano can do more for Pogačar than we've seen thus far. You know that with the Slovenian wonderkid you're likely going to ride in pink early, which comes with responsibilities. While also teams are going to put everything on you because you got the #1 favourite. In that scenario I just can't wrap my head around the UAE technical staff not choosing for the safe option of bringing an extra climber. If Bjerg or Majka falls, this team is seriously hurt. Probably if Majka drops out Pogačar will have to do a hell of a lot more and earlier. And for what? Molano is a capable sprinter, who's able to win against the lesser gods of the peleton. Or surprise them from a far, if other teams make a miscalculation. Yet this season Molano hadn't shown prior to the Giro that he was in top form or could contest with the best sprinters. Now you got Molano there that isn't likely to get even constistently top 5 placings. Maybe I'm not seeing another reason. He's on a contract until 2026 for some reason, so using him makes sense. But not if you got GC ambition in a grand tour which UAE always will have. Plenty of other opportunities.

So Chris, how much talking do the sprinters do to themselves on the bus? We see them here fussing with their teammates outside the bus, but do they continue the drama inside? Something like, "I know I could've won, I know I could've won yesterday, I know I could've won the day before. 99 bottles of beer on the wall, 99 bottles of beer. But I am surrounded by people who do not care about me. They must be jealous, all I can figure. They'd rather see me finish with them than win the stage and pop open the bubbly in front of my adoring fans." 😀

That's what happens with sprinters: dense bones and muscle suited to high lactic efforts. If a team is riding for a sprinter, they expect to go back with him and escort them back to the bunch. In getting back, sprinters often do the fastest descents in mountains stages (as in the year Tom Pidcock won Alpe d'Huez due to his descent at front of the race but he wasn't fastest descender). There is a case for saying that sprinters have it hardest: they have to go flat out in stages they're expected to win and they have to bust a gut to make the qualification time in mountain stages; climbers just sit in with slipstreaming and benefit from the modern light bikes with 24 + gear ratios on the days they're not expected to contend

Ewen for some reason has been a complainer in recent years. Yes, Lotto did him a bit dirty last year and since his crash with Sagan in the Tour he's been hurt a lot, but it's a tough business for sprinters, and always has been. One second you're up, the next you can't win anything. Ewen could be a little more humble sometimes, but he may have had a point yesterday.

You all do Caleb dirty. He basically says that the team chemistry is not there yet and they will further discuss this in the evening. I see nothing wrong there. Its not complaining, just stating the facts.

Caleb Ewan is never NOT whining about something. Blah blah this blah blah that. Cry me a river. I honestly can't stand him. He'd blame anything that moves (or didnt) before blaming himself as he picks his crap up off the deck when he falls (and falls again). The most over-rated rider in the peloton with a completely over inflated sense of self-importance. Not even a close contender - pack fodder.

Caleb is so yesterday's man. Hasn't done anything for quite a long time. Younger guys are faster and stronger. Also Jayco just don't know what they want to focus on....GC or sprints??? - they are too weak overall to do both.

Could do like Cav did when he re-joined Quickstep on the B team, didn't expect any more but did his best and ended up on TdF team as personality issues worked in his favour. He took his chance big time such that the Belgians worked together to block him on Champs

Sprint stages can be great to watch - the last 60km and to have some idea of how long it took to form the break. More like cinema wild west shootouts with a long build up

Caleb Ewan looks alot heavier nowadays just like his teammate Dylan Gronewegan, he can win races it just has to be right circumstances and if he goes to the Tour he'll need some big luck to beat clearly the best Sprinter of Jasper Phillipsen. Ewan gets beat around alot at the end of the sprints and the way I see Ewan winning Sprints again is a straight up flat stage with no hills he doesn't find good position at the end of these sprints and it's because all the other sprinters are way too aggressive and they race like Knuckleheads😂🦋🦋

Just had this thought: Caleb Ewan being so small, he can't see ahead without poking his nose into the wind and that knocks him back a bit. I've said for years that his sprinting style as an extreme Cav - head below the bars almost on the front wheel has too much weight over the front wheel and leads to steering problems and crashes.
