I use a grinder on my horses but it took awhile to get them used to the noise, vibration and smell. So, to try and use a grinder on a horse that isn't used to it can be a recipe for disaster.

Yes, it is life changing because it makes up finally mature beyond our own wants and needs. Life gets clear and a ton of stuff you used to care about doesn't matter anymore. Just support each other; no expectations, no advice, no criticisms. Let your instincts guide you. I believe in both of you and I know you can do this. Give each other grace and tell everyone else to butt out. Thank you for the video.

@caleberickson_The_Dying_Breed Looks like surgery will be needed to repair it. It sucks though. Both stallions I trained, in their first full year of campaigning, made it to the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto. I'm supposed to be riding them, but for a missed step and a fall, someone I trust wholeheartedly will be riding them instead. As you get older, you don't bounce as well as you used to! LOL 🤣 Jenn 💖🇨🇦

Caleb, I've really enjoyed your videos. It wasn't that long ago that I discovered that cows get their hooves trimmed (who knew?). Until recently, my idea of farriers was that they simply put shoes on horses and that was it. It's obvious that foot (hoof, claws, whatever the animal) care is very important to the health and well-being of the animals. Since then, I've been fascinated watching people like yourself performing this vital service. I know the animals appreciate it, especially when it's done, and clearly the owners do too. Congrats on the young-un. Looking forward to the next video.

How do people not realize that horses are intelligent creatures that deserve basic respect? If I had an ingrown toenail (which I've had before and it was extremely painful), I wouldn't want the doctor to just walk in and yank my foot. A horse is almost 10x my weight. I don't want to piss one off.

This guy… we want to keep the horse comfortable. - My farrier- (me) this is an old mare and she’s got arthritis in her hips and back. Farrier- jerks feet up way high- she pulls. He smacks her with rasp. ‘Your horse is not trained. You better train this horse to get worked on or I’m not coming back!’
@nyxcin119 күн бұрын
Sounds familiar: do you live in North Idaho? I have arthritic seniors, told my farrier and he completely ignored me, then would throw a fit when the horses want their foot back, then not wanting to pick them up, doing what Tank is doing by not wanting to put weight on the painful leg. He wouldn't take the time and won't 'inconvenience' himself. During the summer, he rodeos and has been hurt doing that, but he refused to show courtesy and respect to arthritic senior horses. We came to an understanding. Maybe he'll go back to California.

What always amazes me is how people do not consider the physics and physiology of 1000 + pounds of animal held up 24/7 by four rounded pieces of tissue only 6-8 inches wide by 10 inches or so high (I know those measurements are off, but they make my point) LOL. Can you imagine the amount of pressure per square inch? Or how important measurement and conformation are to the proper function of each? I give you great credit in your ability to explain the importance of what you do to people who ask. I also applaud the time you take to let others know that the problems you see are not always due to neglect or bad ownership. Anyone who has ever assumed responsibility for an animal, pet or other, knows stuff happens! What you need to look at is what is done once they are aware there is a problem! I really enjoy your videos and your work ethic and attitude towards the animals you help!

Not a farmer or work with animals Would a bag filled with something like dry rice etc You could fill a couple a.couple of small sacks so you don't have to use your hand or boot to balance and hold the hoof . So maybe a square bag maybe 3 inches high which you can create a v notch in it to lay the hoof up on it I hope this makes sense

Congratulations on your new arrival- your son and for your qualifications. That’s a lot to do in a short period of time. I was wondering if glueon shoes might help with the concussion forces going through his hind end and thus help with his lameness. Oops you answered the question. I was too quick to post this question. Would a polyurethane (plastic) hammer help him with the nailing- so the hammering doesn’t jar him as much?

I notice in your videos that you generally trim flat, which would be appropriate if you're preparing the hoof for shoeing - do you ever trim horses with a bevel? I typically trim barefoot to 45 degrees on the quarters, 60 on the toe to assist in breakover and the hoof's overall function. It also benefits your roll and dressing, and of course, rounded edges provide the most protection from cracking and chipping. If any terms are unfamiliar, I'm English so we may use some different words here and there:)
@caleberickson_The_Dying_Breed13 күн бұрын
@zahkgames5812 depends Balance is different than flat and level generally flat and level is to goal but pathology dictates actually trim an some i unload quarters on some i trim a heel lower than the other and again on some i role the toe on the front
@zahkgames581211 күн бұрын
@@caleberickson_The_Dying_Breed It's the old "Don't balance a strong structure to a weak structure" I wasn't questioning the quality of your work, we both trim very differently I feel, and we must because the environment demands it. I see recessed soles, thrush, white line disease etc because it's so wet over here, whereas for you I think you're working in drier conditions, so you'll probably see more cracking and chipping than I do.

I disagree with you with the glue on shoes. It depends on what shoes you are using. Some are extremely expensive and time consuming, but there are some that go on easily and don’t break the bank. BUT the hoof and environment determines which glue on shoe you use. In my experience most farriers don’t have enough experience using them, which is why they aren’t used more.
