Great to hear. You certainly do have this under control now! :) Keep it up. When stumbles happen, pop back up and get back on track. Things happen but you have shown everyone you understand money / life management now and you have made your own luck. So much better than hearing, “well, I hope if this happens then that will happen”. That thought process very seldom works out and it’s just sad to see. Thank you for sharing! It gives me hope. Very little debt currently but bankruptcies (yes, plural) and bad credit is making life hard. Need to find a way to work with my spouse to get a emergency fund and retirement fortified going forward. Almost 50 and have never had a safety net in life. Lucky I guess I’m a Chef and Chefs don’t get sick or miss work ever. :) Actually teaching culinary now (last 16 years) so that greatly helped income. Still broke 50% of the month. I’ll get there. At first I was disappointed with how Caleb handled this, how he could have called things out but didn’t say much but then I gained respect for him knowing his limits and being honest in saying that he cannot help this guy. You can’t help someone that wouldn’t be able to take any of your advice due to their mental/health situation. Caleb is rooted in that reality. Instead of trying to convince this guy to be something he’s not Caleb just says “well you know you” and that’s all you can say

I tried all his methods, blowing my paychecks (i did have a retirement account which i was sane to not blow) and maxed out credit cards on games and spent all the shit to distract myself. Turned out i got more depressed living to paycheck to paycheck anxiously waiting for my next paycheck, i went back to frugal and started saving again.... its not easy but nothing much others can do. he's on the right course going to therapy but he needs to know life goes on.... he can't live in the streets or expect the goverment to have a policy to bail everyone suffering mental issues everytime...

As someone who suffers with major depressive disorder I kind of understand what that therapist asked of you. They offered a more permanent solution to your depression, when you lose weight, eat healthy and exercise daily in most cases your depression gets A LOT better and you start being motivated again. Antidepressants are just a quick fix that doesn't really address the root of the problem. I tend to binge eat when I'm depressed so my weight used to be up and down all the time until I put myself on a strict diet and exercise routine that I'm not allowed to break because I've done it before and I always fall back into the same unhealthy things I did before. So be strict with yourself and don't allow your emotions to control your actions. Good luck my man.

It is hard to cook when you're depressed. At my most depressed state I tend to eat cereal or cheese popcorn when I'm by myself because its all I can get myself to do. However, I have started cooking one large thing a week that I can then just warm up for several meals. For example, a large tray of enchiladas, a large pot of chili, crockpot lasagna, beef vegetable soup. It's easier than weekly meal prepping in my opinion because it's just one thing not several.

That therapist that said he should eat healthy, exercise, cut out sugar and gluten sounds like they know what they’re talking about. Most therapists won’t even touch on the lifestyle factors that contribute to mental health issues so mad respect to that guy/lady. Most people who have depression and anxiety can easily solve it by changing their lifestyle with nutrition, exercise and sleep. It is a very rare circumstance where that doesn’t get rid of it, but at the very least it helps a lot.

For folks who don't have someone around when they are feeling ill, I recommend cans of soup - always get soup you really like and not cheap whatever because $2-4 of soup for one meal is a decent price. All the other quick meal options are good, but having a stash of some canned or boxed food like your emergency fund that can be made up in minutes has come in handy during even unexpected bad weather.

Chris you seem like a genuinely great guy. Mental health is hard, and I commend you for coming on here to share your life and struggles with everyone. I know it's hard to see through the clouds of depression an anxiety, but as a total stranger(and someone with anxiety, ADHD, and body image issues), I think you'd be a super cool guy to be friends with and hear the stories of all of your adventures. Honestly I don't think that therapist was deliberately trying to destroy his mental health. A lot of suggestions would have probably helped him. Taking care of your physical body will do a lot more for your mental health than pills and psychotherapy. The problem is that most people in a sub-optimal state of mind can't do the physical health suggestions until they get past some other barriers first. I think the therapist he had jumped the gun on the physical health suggestions and definitely should have tried to implement them at a slower pace so it wasn't as overwhelming.

I think the issue was that the therapist said in order to continue seeing her, he would need to do all of those things. It was not just a recommendation, it was an ultimatum or threat, to go walk but many other things and if he did not do them then she will no longer see him. I agree some of these things will help and improve mental health but under threat of being abandoned by said therapist is extremely unhelpful and arguably dangerous.
