Just bought this monitor. Thanks for your video. I'm just now messing around with it and so far it seems really great. I have one question. My display doesn't appear to take up the whole glass. Hi Caleb, some help needed here. 2 questions not related to the shinobi. How do you film with that dark background without having noise in the image??? Did you use a lens with less than 4f? I’ve been trying to shoot a video with more light than that and I get noise 😭😭😭. I’m using canon EOS R with 25-105mm (it only opens at 4f, 400 ISO!) second question: would you please link those red straps? The one you have on the HDMI cable??? Crazy looking for them. Out of all the videos I see you understand that underexposing the background and adding in the light to you makes the video look awesome. Why other guys who have 4k flat color corrected videos is beyond me. High contrast video is the smart good looking way. Use this style as it makes your video eye pleasing. What studio lights you use for this light?

Great review. I actually have this monitor but haven't used it nearly enough. Almost got bit on a shoot with the focus on the small LCD screen SO I'll be packing this with me. Question: It looks like in your video, you have the image in your camera LCD and the Shinobi at the same time. I'm shooting on a Canon M50 but can't figure out a way to get both which would be great since I still need to use the Canon's touch screen to change settings. How did you get both screens? Thanks!

Great video, I have a question about this item. I bought this to work with a Nikon z9. Is it compatible with Nikon Z9? Atomos does not list being compatible but have found where someone is using it but having issues with taking photos. I want to use it for video. Any info from anyone is appreciated. I fit doesn't work its for sale come with two batteries charger. arms, power cable, HDMI cable. FYI. I hope I can get it to work. Thanks.

Question, I'm planning on getting this with the Nikon Z6. Cameras like that have touch screen LCD on the back to focus, I'm filming myself and I'm the only operator so ideally I'd like to have this external monitor within reach as I'm sitting a distance away from the camera that doesn't have a flip out fully articulating LCD screen. The touch to focus on the Nikon Z6 wouldn't transfer onto the Shinobi (or any other similar external monitor) would it? I'd still have to get out of my seat and reach for the camera's LCD....? But then if I'm out of my seat trying to focus on myself, then I wouldn't be sitting where I'd like to be focused on anymore... what would be the solution to this, please help. Thanks!

Your camera will still film 120fps bit the screen of the Shinobi won't refresh that quickly so it will only display 60fps

Caleb, I have been a stills photographer since god knows when and recently upgraded to a Nikon D810 which, as you know, has video recording. I am wanting to try the video facility but as the Nikon does not have a tilt screen i'm looking to buy a monitor. Here's the question; Where the hell does one go to find out what the monitors facilities you were talking about are? Every video I seem to watch seem to assume I know the lexicon of monitors....what's LUT's. What you use these features for in video recording, they are there for a reason obviously. For example, I've discovered that a recordable monitor will record a better recording as, unlike a DSLR, it does not compress the coding. Is this true? So I cannot make a buying decision until I know I am paying for things I do/do not need. I've dialled in 'monitor tutorials' and just get monitor reviews like yours. HELP! I need a monitor tutorial, where do I go?.

SmallHD makes some nice stuff, but the menu doesn't even come CLOSE to being this good. Also the 5" Focus has 1280x720 resolution, which for me isn't really good enough to judge focus, especially on 5".

@@rampagetv and my Focus powered off today and will not power on and all they say is pay for shipping , pay them $100 for estimate and then they will tell me how much to fix. Which will probably be more than the new half off price it is now. (I paid $600 for mine in 2018 and was hardly used.)

For vlogging only, I'd go with the Shinobi. It weighs less and has a brighter screen for filming outside. If you need to flip the screen a lot more and film mostly inside, the SmallHD Focus OLED is my preference. (It costs much more though too.)

Fairly similar yes, but different ways to use them. I do like how the SmallHD lets you stack different settings onto different "screens" you can swipe between. The Shinobi responds faster to touch and toggles though.

Hi thanks for the video.I am using shinobi with canon R6 and canon R5 and the input signal is stacked at hd50fps on top left of the display. I canot change that and it does not change when changing to 25fps, 60fps ,4k25 or whatever. I canot find any solution for this.

If I wanted to record 4k 120fps or 4k 60fps internally on my a7siii which I do all the time now, and then get this Atomos Shinobi as my external monitor (just so I can see easier), am I still able to record at 4k 120fps and 4k 60fps internally with the shinobi plugged in? Or it visually can’t display 4k 60fps/120fps, how does that work?? Please help!

How do you get footage to play back on the monitor? I'm using a canon 90D and it will bring up video files but it has no way to play the clip to review it. It says "set" in the upper left corner but when I push "set" on the camera, it blinks and comes back up with no play options. I have scoured the internet and cannot find an answer.

hello. I am having a problem with my atomos shinobi. Was wondering if you know weather the shinobi works with only with mirroless cameras . Both on my 5d m2 and my 60 d, once i start to record the screen goes black. It does not let me monitor while recording but it does let me see playback. Is there somewhat of a fix for this or is my cameras just to old for its use??

I like the screen brightness and colors on the Shinobi better + their OS is super fast (responsive touch screen). I like the multiple screens/preset views you can make on SmallHD better though. Plus the rotating tilt bracket. Just depends on what you prefer.

The Shinobi only supports 4K @ 30fps, but the new Sony a7siii that I just got shoots 4K @ 120fps with the CF Express card. So, will this monitor still show my image if I’m shoot in HD @ 120/240fps or 4K @ 60/120fps?

it will work but wont show 120fps on screen. also, even with v60 cards, you can use the 4k 120fps xavcs or hs mode.

Nice monitor but one assumes you buy this so you can use it outside in bright light.... the sun hood is EXPENSIVE even if you buy it separately or in an accessory kit.... SMALL HD hood is about $20 and the Shinobi is $114 !!!! IT IS JUST a plastic cover , so that's insane and highway robbery if you ask me. A sneaky way to charge a higher price albeit IF you need the hood but most people would need it I think.

2:09 when we have a sony camera shooting on s cinetone, which gamma and gamut are we supposed to select? there is no s cinetone in there. is it better to just turn off the camera output log hdr setting on the left of the screen?

Sadly, unless Atomos updates the firmware and adds S-Cinetone, you are better turning it off or use a LUT.

Oligar da Paz The screen on the Shinobi is more colour accurate, so if you want accuracy try to change the a7iii's display.

The Shinobi has some very slight hesitancy between changing screen enlargement back to original scale. There’s 3 view buttons but 1:1 seems to be hesitant returning back. Also input signals can stop but I think it might be cable at fault or it’s sensitivity?
