Brings back memories!! Not good ones. Helping my uncle do the same thing on a calf. he was having issues getting the tag in. I stepped in to help hold the calf. Turned my back on the mama cow. She found me, knocked my butt for a loop. Bruised my ribs on one side . Dr. was surprised none were broke. Moral of the story, don't turn your back on a mama cow.

we always put the mother's number on the back of the tag and the bull. but we kept all of our heifer calves. it helped to prevent in line breeding.

How come you tag both ears with next numerical numbers? I don't think I caught that part. I assumed one would be for the heffer and the other for the calf to show relation. But I also thought the heffer would have been tagged before then.

Why 4 and 5? In the netherlands we put the same numbers in both ears. When the come to buy the lambs they have a scanner to scan them so the system knows wich lamb is where.

curious, (aside from future breeding) if you're not doing dairy why do you care about the sex of the calf? I'd think you'd want steers for higher meat yield.

+The Gardden Channel I've come to find that heifers will sell higher than males except for slaughter. Since we sell them as feeders, there is a higher demand for heifers on the market as compared to slaughter since many other farmers look to purchase heifers as well.

no, a heifer is not a cow. cattle is the species of animal. a cow is a female cattle that has had a calf. typically cow is used to refer to cattle in general, but technically it does refer to an older female cattle that has had a calf.
@susangardiner2087

Why do you put a 4 in one ear and a 5 in the other. Does it mean you have 45 female cows now. I get the color part but the numbering system is new to me. I heard of tagging where they have numbers and a letter on the tag but it was only put on one ear for example for first calf of the year it gets 1A the next 2A no matter what gender. The following year calves would be 1B etc. But good catching.
@michaelv5566

Yes - I'm curious about the same thing. I'm not a farmer. I just love watching and learning. Why does each animal have two numbers? (In case one falls out...?)
@kjvandal1401
@kjvandal1401 7 жыл бұрын
Michael V farmers use all sorts of systems to keep track of cattle specifically heifers to monitor genetics to ensure they don't inbreed and to track age. example the tag 4...maybe meaning from cow bred by bull number 4...the 5 may be the year it was born. that way if they decide to keep that heifer they know it's genetics and age. there could be countless meanings of the number but usually they are used for something more than just counting. the color of tags...the ink color...which ear it's in...all could mean different things to different ranchers

+DALA BEAST The part where the tag goes in is very thin and isn't very sensitive. As long as you aim right and do it quickly it won't hurt the calf, it doesn't even bleed. It's comparable to a needle you get in a hospital. If they aim right and if they do it quickly you hardly feel anything but if they do it very slow it hurts like hell.
