It will work with a sub setup, if you’re using two channels routed through the sub and then hi-passed over to monitors. As for assisting subwoofer integration, we don’t do it yet, but we’re thinking of ways how to assist people so they get the best out of their gear. Reference 4, however will help if your sub is badly integrated, but take care that you get it right.

The Sonarworks looks like a nice alternative to Genelec's room correction system (for those of us not using new Genelec speakers). The corrective eq should be helpful for getting a balanced direct sound. It will not change the variable decay times of a room across the audio spectrum, so ringing bass frequencies seen in a waterfall graph of the room's response will remain unchanged. That is where acoustic treatments come in, but building effective bass traps is difficult, costly, and takes up a lot of space if you install enough to be effective. Have you ever heard of anyone using a phase inverted delay to match and cancel the bass modes of a room? I'm not sure it would work, but it would be great if dsp could help reduce the long decay times of sounds in the 30-120Hz range. Achieving balanced decay times in studio mix rooms, home living rooms, and live venues seems to be the final frontier for sound quality and clarity.

One of thee most important videos. More on this topic would be a great thing. Other speakers, amps, connection, how to correct, understanding especially what is perfection or optimum equalization and how to read it for exact product completeness. Other software or hardware devices in the home user semi pro range expense side for us common/uncommon folk. So, in the end, when the product walks from the room, everyone is satisfied, with hope that the product is not returned for correction. Does this make sense? More?

I had a chance to audition the LP-8's at a local studio recently and was genuinely shocked by how well they held their own next to Genelec 1031A's, which I've been mixing on for decades, and were 10 times the price. I'm a fan of the Sonarworks software as well, but it can't work miracles. In a room with truly horrible acoustics, the frequency response issues are largely caused by reflections - a time domain problem. Trying to rectify a time domain problem by altering the frequency response of the monitors with EQ can actually do more harm than good. It's the equivalent of treating a gunshot wound to the chest by putting on a clean shirt. I have NO doubt Warren already knows this, but maybe some of his viewers don't.

The thing with reflections is that not all of them work in the same manner. If they reach your ears 25ms or less after the direct signal, your brain will basically sum them up as one. This is how you get the peak from desk bounce for example. Now the thing is - you can EQ that peak away completely. As for late reflections after the 25ms treshold, that’s where treatment has to come in. Getting that RT30 in check will help with hearing your mix as it is tremendously.

Thanks Warren, Kali and Sonar works. I was listening with my Sony MDR-V6 and heard the mid range drop massively. I have been a big Tannoy studio monitor fan, but the Kali look really nice and sweet for the price. I know Sonar Works software is non monitor brand specific. I was also thinking about the NS - 6. I hear they are great for mixing since they are very, very flat. I heard that when you first hear the NS - 6 or NS- 8 you are like what the snizzel ( sorry warren LOL ) since there are very different then anything you have heard before.

Did you calibrate your iLouds at your mix desk? What is better for a small-ish room, 9.5' x 11' (8' ceiling), the LP8 or the LP6 with a good sub-woofer (that can switch in and out), reasonably well treated?

Where the mini DIP-switches flat on the Kali's? Would have been interesting to see how flat you could have gotten them with and without the DIP's, without even adding Sonarworks. I had a pair of Gennies I did this experiment with and was actually able to get them so flat in that room I didn't need the Sonarworks plug active in the end. Ordered a pair of LP-6, and will try that same method with my Sonarworks mic.

I had the headphone addition for a good while and recently upgraded to the studio addition. It definitely works.

Would be interested in hearing your thought on Sonarworks vs GLM/SAM and SMAART? Just sold off my old monitors and am considering Focal Trio's or Genelec's (possibly 1032, 8341/51's or the 8330 Triple SAM) and now Kali's as well!. Demo'd Sonarworks and it was amazing but I did notice (or at least it appeared to me) that the bass was severely rolled off a bit. I did chat back and forth with Sonarworks support and I still was a little unclear on how it works with a sub as GLM/SAM performs some type of time alignment. Our studio is 12x26 and about 90% treated. I am very familiar with SMAART and it does a decent job of flattening. Thoughts?
@cziarno19726 жыл бұрын
Additionally I hear the "value for money" concept but I heard the comment around "how are you going to do your next studio" and the decision is Focal. Interesting...?
@SoundIDCreators6 жыл бұрын
We sometimes use SMAART in our lab and it’s a great tool. A smart guy with SMAART can probably do the same thing. Our software is something that’s for everyone.
@cziarno19726 жыл бұрын
Sonarworks I “hear” ya! ;-). When I demo’d SW I thought I was really nice. The GUI is really good, the wizard is well done and it is really nice to be able to pick profiles on the fly if you multiple reference monitors or different mixes along with headphones. I was a little confused on how to use it with a sub though. I ended up having to run the wizard with the sub OFF and THEN turn it on and feed it in. Was a little confused on that piece. What I heard about GLM is that their is some type of phase alignment running that time corrects the sub or something but I am not sure. I am on the fence between SW with a Focal Trio setup or a 8351 or 1032 Genelec setup with GLM.
@SoundIDCreators6 жыл бұрын
It really depends how you use the sub. If it’s a separate output channel, then it’s a no go, because Reference 4 is stereo only at the moment. However, if you’re running a throughput connection where sub does HPF stuff for the signal that gets sent off to the monitors, then you should be okay. Running a calibration without the sub and then adding it won’t work right as the software will try to compensate the low-end roll-off of the speakers and with the sub added this might end up being a hump in the resulting response. As for your monitor question, I’d personally go with Genelec 8351’s, as they’re masterfully designed monitors. We admire what Genelec is doing as a company and are actually on friendly terms with them. As for GLM, borrow it from the dealer, compare it to our stuff and see what works for you best. Neumann and Adam should also have interesting offerings at your price range.

@@SoundIDCreators Thanks for the feedback! Like most folks I went down the rabbit hole really deep. Started at a lower budget (actually demo'd the A7X's and Be Solo's) and just felt they weren't something I could "grow into" as I started on Rokkits and Yamahas as most folks. I did check out the K310's at a music center and wasn't really into them. I also checked out Barefoot, Ocean Way and Dynaudio and just couldn't dig them. IMHO the Genelec's have fantastic image and precision but the Focal come across a bit more natural. The 8" on the Trio does concern me a bit on the low end side... Didn't get a chance to check out any PMC or ATC stuff...

Great video Warren as all ways! I have the headphone version of Sonarworks and it works great! But I have a question that maybe you or someone can help me with. When you are done mixing the song, do you bypass the Sonarworks plugin before you print the whole mix, or leave the plugin engaged when you print the mix? That's the reason I haven't submitted any mixes lately. Also I'm going to get a set of Kali Audio LP8 studio monitors as well as the monitor version of Sonarworks as well. Have a wonderful day as well.

@joseph valo you MUST bypass the sonarworks plugin in before you bounce.Then when you listen to it on your computer you can engage systemwide.

I have a question for Nathan Baglyos of Kali Audio. I have a room that I will transform into a home studio with acoustic treatment. It's a small room: 3 x 3'8 meters (9'84 x 12'47 feet). So, which monitors do you recommend (would be ideal or enough) for a room like that, LP6 or LP8s? I will put a pair of subwoofers too (Carl Tatz advise in PLAP following video). Thank you very much!

I may have missed it or it might not have been addressed. Were the Kali speaker dipswitches used at all prior to the calibration using Sonarworks?

Very nice tools! So basically this software is doing what one would do with an RTA, cabilbration mic, and graphic eq, yes? In the past I would measure the room, see the results on the RTA, then use a graphic eq to boost/cut any nasty frequencies. This software applies correction via your DAW?
@SoundIDCreators6 жыл бұрын
RTA measures one spot, whilst Reference 4 takes 34 measurements and averages them depending on their position. Using an RTA won’t be able to correct timing differences between the channels as well. As for where the correction is applied, Systemwide app can do it for the whole OS audio. If zero latency is something you require, then a DAW plug-in will be better.

I was debating 305/306p and Kali seemed iffy until I found out the whole story of how they came to be. I wasn't even aware you had reviewed them until last week.. it'll be awhile before I have the monitors but have joined the academy. What's good to work on in the meantime? As far as mixing exercises.

Great video! How do the LP6's compare to the equivalent krk rocket? I have used the rockets for years as they translate well to high end hifi but would like something more accurate but still nice to listen to. My room is less than ideal unfortunately, it is well treated though!

I have a question: I have a room and speakers that produce too much high end - meaning my mixes come out dull and dark. My speakers (Behringer Truth 3031A's) has room compensation switches for high and low freq - now I have everything on flat. Room is not good but with my current acoustic treatment and positioning it's doable. I have found a workaround for the high end in my mixes by tuning them with reference mixes, but would it help if I would turn down the high freq from the speakers? Or just buy tuning software?
