On our trip to Halifax last summer, we had two humpbacks decide they wanted to clean our bottom for us. First one we felt a bump in about 100 feet behind the transom the fin came up and gave a slap. Freaked us all out The next morning, we heard a similar thud and saw a pod of Minkies about 25 yards off our port. So kind of know what it was

Wow ok that is super super freaky. This is the type of story we've heard from time to time - enough that we think about whales fairly regularly while out there! You just never know. We cruised Lake Brasdor and loved it. Its a beautiful area!

These weeks have really been fun. The whales are so exciting, but so is simply relaxing on the beach and finding remarkable shells. The birds were hilarious and I can easily relate to how Bill just talks to them like they were drinking buddies. Loved the sunset timelapse

@@CalicoSkiesSailing isn’t that the truth. I remember years ago when I broke my T6 vertebrae in a motorcycle accident (a 3-beer story) I spent quite some time with a voice in my head telling my I was made of porcelain and everyone treated me like a wounded soldier. It was a long time before I realized that *I* had to begin moving forward and just enjoy the world as before and pretty soon everyone else did as well. I see that time coming bit by bit. This episode was the perfect example.

Bill, the next time you need to swing your boat around don't pull, push. Use the nose of the dinghy to push the boat around. Pulling, especially with a RIB and tied to the transom, is very hard on the motor and the boat. Just a helpful hint from someone who has learned the hard way. Hope all goes well and you guys keep fighting the good fight.

Interesting, there is a differnce on the engine between pulling a pushing? I mean for a outboard playing tug boat either way its hard on the engine because you’re going to get a lot of cavitation

good video. Just caught an extremely quick glimpse of the whale. Yes, I agree a boater scare having a huge beauty swim under or so close to boat! Even though you set anchor in that anchorage. My first experience with a whale was just outside of San Francisco. We were fishing with my grandfather, I was about 8. It came up under the boat and lifted the boat, pushing it aside. My Dad and Grandfather were not to happy. I thought, this is better than Disneyland. Adrenalin junky at 8. All the best to your sister on a speedy recovery.

A sailing instructor I knew back in the 90’s was also a cellist for the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He said he was practicing his cello down below in a sailboat somewhere near Stellwagen Bank (off the tip of Cape Cod), and he swears the vibration/reverberations of his playing attracted a pod of whales close to his boat. Who knows 😂

My Kids were waist high and going down the channel into SanJuan Island a Menke whale came along side - my kids were literly hanging on to the life lines and looking down this whale's blow spout. whale swam aside the boat for 30-40 minutes and only left us when we turned to go into the marina.

ha that may have been easier..its difficult to maneuver the boat backwards without getting so movement astern, since our primary hook was already down that wasn't possible. Ideally we would have had the tender ready to go with the stern hook as we set the primary anchor. As our friends arrived we helped them set both anchors at the same time

Tom, for your reference I did the same thing over the summer when winds shifted and I dropped a second hook. When I messaged Bill about it I think he told me at the time he normally does run the main engine. Then I pissed and moaned about not having a windlass on my 37' boat and how nice that must be.

@@CalicoSkiesSailing I respect your point of view. Where im from (Portugal), Whales (actually orcas) literally hunt you down and rip out your rudder sometimes sinking the boat... 10m (35 feet) waves in 8 sec period are very common, you either have no wind or 40kts, fishing traps everywhere ready to break your prop while you are just trying to keep the boat from going beam in to the wave and get knocked down etc etc... that's why i thought almost hitting a whale in a fair wether day was not a big whoop 😂. Thanks for the reply 🙏 cheers

@@reversingentropyI haven’t heard of any of those boats sinking or people being harmed? 59 North had a good in depth conversation podcast on this topic that included people with local knowledge. Sounds like once again the biggest concerns are related more to boat damage, and how to humanely deter the Orcas. Fishermen using explosives which is arguably inhumane. It is all still in the context of humane treatment of the wildlife as the key conern. Do you agree?

@@darrengladstone3159 Multiple boats sunk no deaths so far that i know about. All information available on Google. It's easy to be all delicate about the issue and talk is very easy. The truth is, there is no solution, it is what it is. I have seen terrified sailors after an attack, they all say the same... It's very agressive it's not playful at all. Nevertheless polar bears, wolfs, tigers etc aren't friendly either if you venture in their habitat, you are taking the risk. That said, now we pay attention to orca predicted location the same way we do for tides and weather.
