California Governor Gavin Newsom has issued a new executive order directing all state agencies to remove homeless encampments from public properties. Newsom said the move was in the interest of public health, but advocates say it could cause even more damage to an already vulnerable population.

​@@dirk480they won't because 1) those shelters can be extremely dangerous, 2) they often have strict requirements on what times you must get there in the evenings and leave in the morning which often doesn't allow working homeless people to be there in time, 3) there are no shelters for full families and most families want to stick together, and 4) in many cities there are not enough beds. I worked in mental health care with homeless people for several years. They don't avoid shelters just because they like sleeping in a tent.

I'm homeless in Los Angeles. I work and pay bills and contribute to society. I'm not a drug addict either. Basic housing is simply unaffordable now! I lost my housing twice during the pandemic and couldn't afford the skyrocketing rents and cost of living! Especially with my car breaking down multiple times and then getting into two separate car crashes! I've been stuck like this ever since, begging for help! All they want to do is put me in a shelter full of alcoholics and drug addicts, without any privacy! I gave up and bought an old Toyota Sienna minivan to live in instead! The system is a joke! Homelessness is rampant in California because of the temperatures as well, homeless people want to live where it feels good. Some amongst them commit crimes, and California is crime friendly. We do need a permanent solution, but homeless people are attracted to California mainly because its an economic power and the climate is more desirable than others.

There’s an endless stream of homelessness due to all kinds of economic, mental, or drug related issues. No amount of money pumping into so called “affordable housing” and “rental subsidies” programs will make a dent in this huge crisis. There’s no such thing as affordable housing or affordable rental in Los Angeles and California in general. How about building a refugee style camp on county, state, or federal land to provide the homeless a safe place to stay and get off the streets? We all know this works as refugee camps are setup almost overnight to provide shelters to thousands and even millions of people displaced by wars and natural disasters. Having them in one place will also make it easier to sort things out and address their mental, drug, or other individual issues.

They have drug problems, mental problems and a lot of them which I've seen interviewed, are there voluntarily. Just because you can't imagine living that way, doesn't mean other people don't want to. Imagine having no responsibilities, no bills, no stressful job, no drama. And you're high all day feeling amazing. Giving them houses with free utilities would make the problem worse.

Idk what the best solution is but something has to be done. I live inland of LA and the homeless encampments near me start fires all the time, a woman was recently stabbed to death by a homeless man a few blocks from my home. There are a few that I see regularly that are clearly unwell and need help. Leaving these people on the streets feels inhumane. The encampments arent suitable for living in. Is the shelter system totally non-functional at this point or what?

Is anyone keeping track of where the homeless are going after their encampment has been removed? We need these data to determine Next Steps. It's not acceptable for these homeless to form another encampment -- that's an irresponsible and total waste of money being used to clear the encampments!!! We need financial accountability and transparency in this process.

Because there isn't a follow-up solution. He's clearing the encampments and giving them nowhere else to go. There aren't enough shelters and the shelters are very dangerous. You can't just clear an encampment and expect the people there to just disappear into thin air.

GIVE THEM JOBS! Hire those that can work as temporary workers for housing. Give them non-critical jobs to put money in their pockets for those able to work. That will give many of them a sense of Value (many of the them have lost that sense).

Great option there. Unfortunately a large segment of this population is disabled, people forget that disability doesn't pay enough for rent in most cases(never did for me) and that's problematic. What really sucks, encampment are usually safer and better then a shelter. I'm speaking from experience there. I don't think people understand the terror of being hunted because your homeless

The problem of necessity vs availability , this has not been solved. It is surprising that it has taken this long for issues to be addressed. Where will the homeless go? that is the next problem.
