California authorities hold briefing after 13 malnourished kids freed from home

Authorities in Riverside County, California held a briefing after a 17-year-old girl escaped her family's home where she and her 12 brothers and sisters were locked up in filthy conditions, some so malnourished officers at first believed all were children even though seven are adults.

What a very Brave brave girl for braking out and seeking help. She saved all of them. This news made me cry. The oldest 28 y/o weighs only 82 pounds. I saw a video interview with neighbor on ABC, he said he worked late and when he came back around midnight he saw the kids forced to march in a line for hours in the house..How he could watch that, record it but not call CPS or the police is beyond me.Wishing them strenght to recover .

praise god that the truth will be found out of the horrible abuse i pray for a harsh punishment be given to the parents i pray that they turn to you lord for help that these kids who are scarred emotionally and spiritually . will . gain love and peace in there lives and. hope and. i pray for continued healing of the children i pray for the police and counsellors that are caring for the family god bless them all.

These horrid cases seem to always happen with home-schooled children, as they are secluded. There needs to be a law in place, that home-schooled children are checked on by social services, on a regular basis.

Home schooling does not make people crazy, this is ludicrous what you suggest here. These parents were clearly deranged, which has nothing to do with home schooling, rather some psychological/neurological aberration/s. It would be foolish to assume no bad things can happen to regularly schooled children, unfortunately they also can suffer abuse at the hands of crazy adults. Making some law to check is a good thing but then it must occur for all families, not just kids which happen to be home schooled otherwise you would introduce a potentially dangerous bias. School teachers, no matter what their extra curricular training might be in "detecting child abuse" amongst their students, are not "experts" in this field and therefore can and do make mistakes. So schools are not fool proof against such horrors either. We heard here in this video some views from neigbors who admitted they thought something was strange but turned a "blind eye" rather than at worst being embarrassed for interfering if nothing was wrong. In this case, had they interfered, this horrible horrible thing could have been brought to light a lot sooner.

Moneca Savoie Homeschoolers are not the problem! Sick people that seclude to avoid being found out are the problem. And all the people that saw red flags but didn’t want to “get involved” are the bigger issue. My home school son plays high school football at a public school. My oldest child is happily married after a successful education. My second oldest graduated 3rd in his public high school class after a home education and is actively involved in theater. I’m an impressive mother and would be disgusted if I were treated like a criminal that needed to be “checked on” by social services because I wanted a higher education than what one teacher in a class of 30+ kids could provide. If you homeschool your children you actually DO have governed tests and educational check points that expose your children to the community. These tests are required to be governed by an outside public school or educational official. I didn’t see any reports of people exposing concern whether it be for seeing malnourished/abused children or the fact that they didn’t have recorded test governing. There are annual well child check ups that went unnoticed for 13 humans. People watching a midnight living room parade for hours. Not to mention the estranged family relationships and obvious concern with in the family members. This didn’t go unnoticed. It went unreported! Maybe we should be invoking laws that protect whistle blowers. Or using some of our media attention to point to anonymous phone lines that allow people to know where to turn WHEN we see something wrong.

They used home school as an excuse and hid behind it. I knew one dad that did something similar. BUT I knew MANY MANY families who actually taught their children at home. The kids grew up happy, healthy, smart, well adjusted, etc, and went out to make lives of their own.
