california jack is a great but wierd game I have never found the ruleset for this game that is the same so many variations

Yea. I think it’s been around the block a few times. So many people have played it, but the rules changed as it traveled around. I’m guessing over the years the rules were miscommunicated a little bit at a time or people adopted the game and changed it to their liking. :)

This is a great game, however. there's nothing in place to prevent someone from cheating in this game. Because each player must follow the lead suit, but, the 2nd player could easily lie about not having a card in the lead suit and play another card in a different suit than the lead one just to avoid picking a worthless card (and forces player 1 to pick up the worthless card). How can I overcome this flaw? It's bugging me
