A note of caution for American expats who die in the Philippines: a death certificate issued in the Philippines has to go through hoops working with the US Embassy in Manila in order for the death certificate to be accepted by financial institutions in the USA. This can delay settling the decedent's estate and can prove challenging for heirs who reside in the USA. Consider this difficulty for your estate planning.

Can you prepay an attorney or agent to handle that? With your heirs having their contact info also

Very good interview and interesting topic. Yes, my dad remarried a couple of years ago after my mother passed away to a younger lady in the Philippines and he’s doing quite well. She is able to take care of him and having fun at the same time raising chickens, goats, pigs, and growing bananas; things one can’t do in San Francisco.

CA or the Philippines? I spent 40 years in CA, San Diego, Orange County, got married in Santa Cruz... Run from CA, as fast as you can. Real Estate 30% higher than the national average. 13% state income tax. $7.00 gas. Homelessness everywhere. Crime everywhere. Gangs everywhere. Angry people everywhere. Road rage everywhere... most expensive healthcare in the US... and the most liberal policies in the nation... verses paradise in the Philippines? If you choose CA, you'll also ned a Therapist and they're not cheap either. Yes, rent your San Diego home and let a rental agent deal with that, then when you pass, your son gets your home to do with as he choses. That would be my plan. God bless you in whatever you decide.

Just a note about flying into Baguio. It is one of the most dangerous airports in the world for landing, especially if the wx is anything but good. I know, I'm a pilot who has landed there many times. PAL only recently resumed flights. I'd personally fly to Clark and take the bus or rent a van from there.
@d9918

Trouble is the road to Baguio is treacherous, I've often heard of deadly accidents on that hilly windy road.
@BigWalley3putt

@@wickman.r4662 also, the runway is relatively short. It has significant drop-offs at either end. There's a very steep runway slope making an approach from the east hard to get on the ground and even harder to get the plane stopped. When approaching from the west there's a high ridge approx 2 mi on final that one needs to skim at approx 100' in order to get on a proper glideslope. No one has crashed recently because larger aircraft haven't landed there for several years, and yes, the road is dangerous. I'm just saying that flying there may not be the preferred mode (IMHO). Travelers should at least be aware of what they're getting into.

From Oregon I would have to say frankly I would even choose living in Cebu City full time over most of southern California. Both are rat-race crime-infested and simply not my style. Looking for a small home, two or three-bedroom, LOL quiet and maybe near the beach or up the mountain. I would pay about 450 a month not condo unless it was just a start out with short-term. I wonder about leasing a native Filipinos land and building Onnit? 🙏🙏

The problem of renting ones own home, isn't passive income, dealing with renter's can be a living nightmare, plus property taxes, HOA insurance, repairs, upgrades etc is a never ending uphill battle, meaning always going up in price, and the home has equally a better chance of falling in price, than increasing in price, and the increase in price can barley keep up with the other rising costs (property taxes HOA insurance repairs upgrades etc etc)

I know the feeling of losing your partner because I'm widow too. It would be nice idea to have someone who will love you and take care of you or have a private nurse in Philippines. My aunt is also from California thinking of retiring in the Philippines and have her private nurse. Even I'm still in my mid 40's thinking of retiring in my humble country Philippines where people are warm and friendly after living abroad for a long time. I wish you goodluck on your plans in the future. Sweats alot will keep you slim. Lol😅❤

Hey Mark, you've mentioned numerous times that a geriatric nurse can be hired for $400 or $500 a month (possibly even as a live in). I was wondering if you could do a little more research into this and tell us exactly where they can be found and what the exact pricing would be. Thanks for the videos you do, im trying to convince my 80yo mother that her life would be so much more fulfilling living in the Philippines compared to living alone here in the US.

There’s a specialized caregivers, licensed medically trained groups and office is in Cebu City with a salary of 7K 5 pesos/ month. Almost 200$/ month. Im searching in préparation in bringing my sick sister from the US. 2 caregivers 24hrs. We’re from Cebu town but I prefer to stay in the city for emergency. My idea is hire a nurse once week visit. Chong Hua Hospital ( accept international health insurance ) and Perpetual Succour Hospital international standard. Most my families are in medical field so they’re helping me search even for a gereatric doctor. This is just an info to give you an idea. Cebu is not that huge so your mom can visit beaches or Resto in the mountain.

poverty, low wages, mental illnesses & the lack of needed services. the point is- if you are poor, if you are addicted, if you are mentally ill in an expensive west coast city like san diego, you're far more likely to experience homelessness. high housing costs; rental costs & vacancy rates are far the biggest predictor of rates of homelessness in a community. the average california housing value is $758,600.
