I think our society has had an unwritten contract that working at fast food was an entry level job for youngsters that got their work permits so that they could get their feet wet in the labor market while earning a little spending money for those new shoes, a night out to the movies or to save up for that first car. The oldest person working were the shift managers. Fast-forward, we now have 30-50 somethings with full blown 3-4 kid households that are demanding pay equating to jobs that require entry level skilled trades, some certification, or that may be mentally or physically demanding.

Yep. And while they increase minimum wages for fast food jobs, this increases wages across all other industries because they must compete with fast food. This increases the cost of doing business which is what drives price hikes on all goods and services. California has had a problem building adequate housing for generations eventually the elevated cost puts pressure on people to need to get paid more the government puts that responsibility on employers. Employers pass that cost to consumers and that elevates the cost of living in addition to housing then the same cycle starts from the top down. It's the government failing to adequately provide housing for the population the elevated cost putting pressure on every other facet of life. It becomes more apparent when you compare other cities where housing costs have not been as prolific.

Unless you're a store manager or higher, fast food is one of those jobs that isn't meant to pay a "livable" wage, they're meant for kids in high school or college, or someone looking to pickup supplemental income in addition to their primary income. What did they think would happen when their employers were forced to pay them $20/Hr? These people can't see 5 minutes past their nose. If you wanna make more money, you're gonna have to get your skills up. Period.

Wages go up for a few workers. Workers have more money in their pocket... Then as they have more money, they pay more for rent, gas, and everything else. No net win. Net loss for everyone else this also impacts. As a consumer not seeing my wages go up but am seeing the cost of fast food going up, the situation encourages me to buy less fast food. In fact, regardless of wages, when meals at a fast food restaurant now exceed 15 dollars, I vote with my wallet and don't really visit them any more. Better food value elsewhere. Let me debunk this 1. Many fast food workers struggle to make ends meet Rebuttal: Working in fast food is not supposed to be a career. Its a high school job, to pay of student debt, or a stepping stone into corporate. 2. It can help lift people out of proverty Rebuttal: A study in Illinois saw that every time they increased the min wage (3 times), the cost of goods rose within 3 months to nullify the increase in wage 3. Economic boost Rebuttal: No, see Illinos study 4. Labor rights Rebuttal: What rights? Do a job that has a market need and which people are willing to pay a high salary for. Economic needs shift over time, when a job type is in demand, people are willing to pay lots of money for it. When it is not in demand and too many people are willing to do the same job, the wages of that job go down due to competition from employees. Min wage is just legalized price fixing.
