I think our society has had an unwritten contract that working at fast food was an entry level job for youngsters that got their work permits so that they could get their feet wet in the labor market while earning a little spending money for those new shoes, a night out to the movies or to save up for that first car. The oldest person working were the shift managers. Fast-forward, we now have 30-50 somethings with full blown 3-4 kid households that are demanding pay equating to jobs that require entry level skilled trades, some certification, or that may be mentally or physically demanding.
@jillthinksimabreakfasttaco4904
@jillthinksimabreakfasttaco4904 2 ай бұрын
Yep. And while they increase minimum wages for fast food jobs, this increases wages across all other industries because they must compete with fast food. This increases the cost of doing business which is what drives price hikes on all goods and services. In the end, raising minimum wage solves nothing. 30-50s hoping to make a career out of fast food need to do better for themselves and get a real job.

Not a good idea. I live in Orange County and have seen many food places shut down. I've talked with people that work in that industry, and they say that they will get the twenty per hour but fewer hours, or they will get the twenty and regular hours as before, but since they are making more, they have to pay more taxes. This is exactly why we need to inform ourselves before supporting a proposition. Did people really think they were going to get twenty dollars without a catch?

In-N-Out was paying over $20 per hour long before it became the minimum. They're doing OK. That said, probably most of us have worked fast food at some point in our lives. Me included. My first "real job" was at Taco Bell. I lasted about 1 1/2 years. I moved on. If someone wants to make a career in a minimum wage fast food job, that's their decision. My thought, though, is these jobs are stepping stones. Unless you're thinking of being in management, or higher, in fast food, you do need to think about your future outside of flipping burgers. These jobs are young person jobs. When you're young, you can stand all day while hustling in a restaurant. As you get older, that may not be possible. Think about it.

I think the larger thing people seem to forget is how and why we're at this junction point. California has had a problem building adequate housing for generations eventually the elevated cost puts pressure on people to need to get paid more the government puts that responsibility on employers. Employers pass that cost to consumers and that elevates the cost of living in addition to housing then the same cycle starts from the top down. It's the government failing to adequately provide housing for the population the elevated cost putting pressure on every other facet of life. It becomes more apparent when you compare other cities where housing costs have not been as prolific.

Wages go up for a few workers. Workers have more money in their pocket... Then as they have more money, they pay more for rent, gas, and everything else. No net win. Net loss for everyone else this also impacts. As a consumer not seeing my wages go up but am seeing the cost of fast food going up, the situation encourages me to buy less fast food. In fact, regardless of wages, when meals at a fast food restaurant now exceed 15 dollars, I vote with my wallet and don't really visit them any more. Better food value elsewhere. Considering how costly it is to live in California if the people dine at these restaurants, want to keep The restaurant operating they will need people who are interested and what to develop the business to one day Maybe an owner operator. I mean all the factory workers (who were much much more skilled and hardworking than fast food workers) lost all their jobs because it’s cheaper to outsource all that to Mexico and other parts of the world. So now it’s the turn of fast food workers to lose their jobs to automation. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Workers are replaced because of Greed. Sometimes it's good to employ good workers and create a good community. That's all long gone now. Corporate boomers outsourced everything. Doesn't surprise me, boomers had the best of everything and screwed it all up with their stupid egos for future generations

Everyone talks about minimum wages. How come no ones going after a maxium wage. Imagine if the ceo's had to pay the lowest employed at least 10 percent of their salary? So every time they want to give themselves more money they have to pay their employees that much more. Greed... simply greed is controlling everything.

You're right but if someone can't even make college tuition on minimum wage then what's the point of the job? Everything should be a stepping stone but if that stone doesn't even get you to the next step then you obviously become trapped. This isn't even to say that most fast food hires are over the age of 25 and obviously have grown bills to pay and families to feed. Perhaps if rent wasn't $2000 nationally including utilities then labor costs could come down.

Flipping burgers is not intended to give you income to buy a house and raise four children. What California needs to do is tackle the high cost of living, and now the costs of fast food has gone up too. Millions of wasted tax dollars, lack of affordable housing, inefficient government, homelessness and crime are much bigger issues that need addressed.

I agree with most of what you said, but it used to be that you had one person bringing income to home and can raise kids. Just one income. But now you'd need both parents to work, and the kid as soon as they are of age, to work and help pay as well.

They try to make it appear that these people are forced to work at the fast food joints-if you don’t like what they are paying, get a real job. A 35% in crease in labor cost automatically does 3 things, increase prices and as business is lost, reduce staff and eventually shut down as the already financially strapped fast food customer can no longer afford to eat there

Let me debunk this 1. Many fast food workers struggle to make ends meet Rebuttal: Working in fast food is not supposed to be a career. Its a high school job, to pay of student debt, or a stepping stone into corporate. 2. It can help lift people out of proverty Rebuttal: A study in Illinois saw that every time they increased the min wage (3 times), the cost of goods rose within 3 months to nullify the increase in wage 3. Economic boost Rebuttal: No, see Illinos study 4. Labor rights Rebuttal: What rights? Do a job that has a market need and which people are willing to pay a high salary for. Economic needs shift over time, when a job type is in demand, people are willing to pay lots of money for it. When it is not in demand and too many people are willing to do the same job, the wages of that job go down due to competition from employees. Min wage is just legalized price fixing.
