Born and raised in KC. I've been going to Arthur Bryant's since 1963. I moved away from KC in '84 for my job but on my trips home I always go back to Bryant's. The BBQ scene in KC has definitely changed in the last 40 plus years. I cherish those times I had at Bryant's when Arthur was "on the pit" himself. My most memorable moment at Bryant's was meeting and shaking hands with Satchel Paige after an Athletics game, very cool. Thanks for the video.

I'm West of KC, and BBQ in KC is sooo sooo amazing, and your story makes so much sense. Imagine Lunch there, and then a visit the Negro Baseball League museum. That might just lead to a visit in the evening to some small, low keyJazz and Blues club downtown!! That's KC !!!!

@@GarethLeonard When Anthony Bourdain did his KC episode he threw serious shade at AB’s and just generally misrepresented the KC food scene. It was a great travesty in food television. This is well done and well deserved. KC on the whole has many hidden gems that don’t get enough attention.

@@GarethLeonard You might not have liked it TBH. The floors were kinda greasy, and Arthur had two FAT boxers that kinda had the run of the place. How he got away with that, I'll never know. But the Q has never faltered IMO.

I was 5 yrs old the first time my dad took us into Bryant's. We would ride the baseball bus downtown and get off in front of Bryants to get our order to go. We'd walk up the hill a couple blocks then go into old Municipal Stadium and watch the Kansas City A's baseball games and the Kansas City Chiefs football games. I am 64 now. To this day Bryant's is best!

I moved to KC in 1988 from New York. Been to bryants many times. On first visit i was blown away at size of sandwich. They put 6 slices of bread grab a handful of pulled pork smash in top, then put fries on top of that. Then wrap all in paper. One hell if a sandwich will feed 3 easily.

One story, I took my nephew to a Chiefs game in the 90's and this is where we went to get our tailgate meal. He was 15 then, and he's told me that was his fave too cause the sauce turned his fingers orange! I haven't been back for a long time, I live too far away, but this will always be my favorite KC BBQ...tell John McGee hey for me!

My parents and I went on a BBQ tour (we are from KC so we know our bbq trust me)....I kid you not, the gentleman who did all of the prep and bbq'ing.....while in line....whispered to us "if you give me $20 bucks cash I'll give you my discount....walk to the right and right before you get to the register ....cough and I'll hand you the beef brisket sandwiches and run out the door" Each sandwich that he gave us cost literally around $20.....We had three.....Years later he was awarded best employee at the company on Facebook.......He screwed us over with some side things like sauce and stuff....but....hilarious and such a great memory! Priceless....This place is one of the GREATEST restaurants in the world (not just bbq but in general).....God bless them! Great video btw!

oh, one more thing. Back in the day - when you were in line, you handed the guy your plate. My dad taught me to hold a 5 dollar bill under the plate and when the guy took it, you got a pound of meat on your sandwich. They haven't done that in years, probably when Berbiglia bought them. But those were the days....

KC Ribs are hard to beat and the history is incredible! However, having traveled the US and the world, Texas is king of BBQ in my opinion. Joe’s, LC’s, Q39, Arthur Bryant, etc are all amazing and I have deep respect for each of them and for KC BBQ in general. I just personally feel the overall offering of Texas BBQ is better and has more to offer. To each their own!

It's not the given #1 in KC, but it's definitely among the top. Everyone has a different #1 and it's all subjective but they are great. I would say them and gates are the old school and created the game as we know it in KC so they deserve their props and it's cool to see all that they do. Henry Perry, from Memphis, started doing BBQ in 1908. Charlie Bryant and his brother Arthur Bryant began working at Perry's and then Arthur took it over in 1946. Also in 46 a former cook for Henry Perry named Arthur Pinkard partnered with George Gates to start Gates and Sons BBQ. Arthur Bryant's was acquired by MMD Acquisitions LLC around November of 23 and Gates is owned by Ollie Gates as far as I can tell. The heritage of the two institutions, and their connection with Henry Perry give them the clout to be the originators.

Six generations of my family have crossed the threshold of that door. It's literally right down the street from me. One thing that you might not know if you're not from here is the sauce is to help if the meat doesn't taste right - if the meat is smoked right, you shouldn't need any sauce at all. My grandfather said that tradition comes from the days when heating/cooling meats with various elements (cold storage that needed blocks of ice, etc)

A LONG TIME AGO I REMEMBER ORDERING A SANDWICH AND FRIES SO BIG I WALKED OUTTA THERE FEELING LIKE I WAS CARRYING A NEWBORN BABY. HOWEVER, I WOULD GO UP TO GATES TO GET MY SAUCE CAUSE ARTHUR BRYANTS TASTE LIKE IT HAD SAND IN IT. IF YOU KNOW, YOU KNOW!!!

Never ate Bryant’s sauce after that first grit. Nobody in my family eats the sauce, or food. Too many rats and roaches.

Great video! The comments are equally great (if not better); some great memories from times gone by.

I like the Don't overcook attitude, I don't want meat falling off I want it to fight back a little.

I was in Kansas City 3 years ago and I thought the ribs at Arthur Bryant's was awful. I've had much better BBQ ribs at other joints. There is a BBQ joint called Firefly's located in Massachusetts that have much better ribs.

6:42 That's a home run out of Kauffman Stadium for me. High fives to Wayne (and his son, if you're still lurking). I'd been here a few times previously, but on the last trip, a very good friend of mine and I made the trek to visit the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum and see the Royals play a couple of games. I brought him here on the first day, and when I suggested we try another place that had been recommended to me by someone from KC, nope, he was just fine with coming back here. I didn't argue. So, we got the whole experience of waiting in the line before they opened, and two days in a row of some of the best barbecue I've ever had.
