Born and raised in KC. I've been going to Arthur Bryant's since 1963. I moved away from KC in '84 for my job but on my trips home I always go back to Bryant's. The BBQ scene in KC has definitely changed in the last 40 plus years. I cherish those times I had at Bryant's when Arthur was "on the pit" himself. My most memorable moment at Bryant's was meeting and shaking hands with Satchel Paige after an Athletics game, very cool. Thanks for the video.

It's not the given #1 in KC, but it's definitely among the top. Everyone has a different #1 and it's all subjective but they are great. I would say them and gates are the old school and created the game as we know it in KC so they deserve their props and it's cool to see all that they do. Henry Perry, from Memphis, started doing BBQ in 1908. Charlie Bryant and his brother Arthur Bryant began working at Perry's and then Arthur took it over in 1946. Also in 46 a former cook for Henry Perry named Arthur Pinkard partnered with George Gates to start Gates and Sons BBQ. Arthur Bryant's was acquired by MMD Acquisitions LLC around November of 23 and Gates is owned by Ollie Gates as far as I can tell. The heritage of the two institutions, and their connection with Henry Perry give them the clout to be the originators.

Six generations of my family have crossed the threshold of that door. It's literally right down the street from me. One thing that you might not know if you're not from here is the sauce is to help if the meat doesn't taste right - if the meat is smoked right, you shouldn't need any sauce at all. My grandfather said that tradition comes from the days when heating/cooling meats with various elements (cold storage that needed blocks of ice, etc)

6:42 That's a home run out of Kauffman Stadium for me. High fives to Wayne (and his son, if you're still lurking). I'd been here a few times previously, but on the last trip, a very good friend of mine and I made the trek to visit the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum and see the Royals play a couple of games. I brought him here on the first day, and when I suggested we try another place that had been recommended to me by someone from KC, nope, he was just fine with coming back here. I didn't argue. So, we got the whole experience of waiting in the line before they opened, and two days in a row of some of the best barbecue I've ever had.
