Question: Why did you SMOG your car in July 2021? Being a 2019 don't you get 8 years before you need to smog it? Or was that when you transferred ownership? And that smog was only a few days before they implemented the ECU testing. Were you running the SC and tune then?

No smog shop near me would pass your car based on the aftermarket look of the engine bay. We cant even have writing on coolant hoses!

What i did is changed my secondary air pump with aftermarket one and failed the smog with “modified software”. Is putting back my original pump will reset my ecu to its original function.

Alrighty, big question time because I just heard of this bs and I’m worried about my project car(E46 M3 just so people know). So I was planning to convert the SMG to a manual configuration, all mechanical with slight modification to obviously fit the shifter parts. But here comes the issue that I currently don’t know if it will still be legal after the 19th. The current ECU on the M3 reads the SMG, obviously, and to make the manual work I’d have to flash the ECU to read manual. Technically I’m modifying the software but it’s doing nothing emissions-wise, but still modifying to read the manual transmission. Would this be still illegal in light of this new law? Am I SOL? For urgency and actual concerns sake, I never comment or ask anything in KZbins comments section, so I would definitely appreciate a reply.

Any update on your situation? I'm currently going in for a smog and am hoping just flashing back to stock will allow me to pass emissions. Planning on leaving smaller pulley on and staying off boost until I pass.

i think the important question is if flashing back to stock tune via (BM3/MHD/tuner apps) will pass or you have to get a new ECU/ or pay 1k$ to re-image the ECU at the dealers. Would you be able to verify that?

Which is basically someone that combs thru every piece of your car to make sure it is oem and any aftermarket parts related to emissions have a carb #

What a horrible law by horrible politicians. I understand how the tester can see if it’s not OEM. But how does the tester know the difference between Whipple’s CARB tune and a custom tune from OST? Both tunes are custom when compared with the OEM tune.

@@LowLifeMods btw for people that think its about the environment its not, I grew up in a time were we has smog alerts and air quality was hazardous here in Cali way back in the mid to late 80's. Modern cars are a hell of a lot cleaner and more efficient even older vehicles with newer/updated smog equipment run better and cleaner this is about money plain and simple and also pushing this green fallacy. Even our former governor Jerry Brown admitted to this when he raised gas prices, he said Cali isn't making as much money from gas taxes because cars are too efficient and use less gas. Just blows my mind how these people still get elected after pulling shit like that.

California ruined cars and computers for people that love the best. I don't understand how a CARB tune can be seen vs a non-CARB tune. There has to be a trace, so if you have the info for original, I doubt anyone would know. When I lived there, there was always a tax with repairs to keep it legal and make power. Yet I made better emissions than a Prius.
