I love how detailed you are with the breakdown between these two states. It's perfect for those of us who like to compare quantitatively! This content is very high quality and I see it growing quickly--you've certainly earned my sub! One question re: the TX overtime laws though. If you've worked the 7th consecutive day in a workweek, isn't it pretty much guaranteed that the 7th day will be over 40 hours? (i.e. if assuming 8 hour shifts, the 7th work day would be hours 49-56 of the workweek which means overtime, right?)

Hi! Thanks for the comment. Technically, yes if you're working 8 hours per day then the 7th day will be overtime. But they specifically state over 40 hours in one week, which means that if you work in an odd nursing position then your employer can hire you to work every day, 4 hours a day, every day of the week, and you still won't get overtime pay on the 7th day.

I've been practicing as a nurse in Texas for nearly 18 years. The pay is terrible, the insurance is even worse, and they try really hard not to use agency staff. They would rather work their nurses short and get a profit then use agency. I work here because my family is here.

We were a single income home for many years with a family of 5 until very recently when my wife got her BSN and became a nurse in TX. Even bought a house during this time. Cost of living is cheap enough to make it happen fairly easily (for us) actually. My salary alone wouldn't have been enough for us to have the same setup (wife going to school full time while I worked with 2/3 kids in daycare) in California and survive. I was born and raised there and still have family and friends there so I have a pretty good idea what the cost of living is like.

When I collected the data, Houston was the highest paying city in Texas, but the cost of living was too high relative to the other cities in Texas. Also, I'll see if I can start putting the numbers together for NPs.

Different story for nurses working at TMC, world-renowned. It’s a matter of who you work for. I know nurses who works there, able to maintain a mortgage and sustain a lifestyle with just one parent working even non-medical field can do. Can’t do that here in California. One employer over there offers medical coverage for free for life. Here am paying $700/mo for the family to be under the care of the doctors at work. I work for the State hospital.

Have you check the nurses salary in Houston working at the Medical Center area? I currently earn 116;000 annually and will have insurance coverage after (aside from Medicare )working in my current hospital for more than 10 years.I live 3 miles away from the Med Center with a mortgage payment of 1800. My subdivision never got flooded .This is is a regular 40 hours per week.Currently the houses here are getting expensive. Got lucky to get this house 12 years ago.Some of my friends who like to work OT earn way higher than me. I can’t think of a hospital in port Arthur that can pay this much unless you are in managerial position or a Nurse practitioner.

I have about 10 years experience and my friends who I used to work with in Htown said I was crazy to turn it down. They asked if I was in management and I said I just applied as regular RN. Having lived in both states, your data can be somewhat misleading. It would be better to compare cities like San Diego vs DFW, Houston area vs LA area, Austin vs SF... I do agree the working conditions are better in CA, but the quality of living is really a toss up based on your preference. No state income taxes and lower housing cost in Tx will offset some of the wage disparity. Example; You can buy a nice home in TX with great schools and amenities for around 400k, a similar home/neighborhood in San Diego will put you over 1 million easily.

In future videos I will go more in depth and include safety and crime rate per city but this video only takes the cost of home prices and tax liability into account. And I'm comparing all major cities in each state, not pinning one city against another.

@@NursesToRiches Even by your standard, the only way to compare housing is to find similar area, neighborhood, and schools. I know plenty of CA families making a combine income of 200k+ living in a dump. All I'm saying is there's definitely a trade off.

A FIRE video for singles maybe 🥺 The way I see it, as a single young man with no kids, working nights and weekends, with 3-4 overtime shifts a month in Sacramento, I could invest close to $75-$100k per year while living off of $40-$50k. I would rent a room and basically live like I do as a student. After ten years, compounded in addition to swing trading, I honestly think $1.5m should be 100% possible. Coast FIRE in 10 years at minimum.

Gas in California is double of Texas. And didn't include sales and property tax. Everytime they buy coffee which is more expensive in CA is compounded with CA highest Sale Tax in the country. And even though the property tax rate is lower in CA, the house price is more. So that is also a higher dollar amount. And all that overtime put you in a higher Fed and State income tax bracket too. And what about quality of life? Less homeless and thugs on the streets. And you can have a weapon in Texas. And CA toll roads? They are higher than Texas too. All that adds up!

Texas’ property tax is incredibly high, making it not worth it to buy a home in my opinion. I’m a nursing student in Texas and a native of California. As much as California is expensive, there are so much more positives for me to go back home than stay in Texas after graduation. I much rather invest in a home in California, have family, be near a beach, and have more opportunities.

Move to Vegas. We have one of the highest hourly rates in comparison to cost of living. Lowest paying hospital here as a Icu/ed RN = 100,000 base. Homes are about 30% cheaper than California and a lot better and newer

Most hospital unions contracts have alternative work week overtime calculations and they differentiate 8, 10, and 12 hour workers. So RNs who work 12 hours do not see overtime pay until they go over 12 hours in a shift or 36 hours in a work week. If you go over 12 in a shift it is double time still and not 1.5x. If you pick-up an extra shift and you worked your 3... the entire shift will be 1.5x pay. If you work all 7 in a week the first 8 hours is 1.5x and the last 4 is 2x.

Union Dues and Health Insurance is also voluntary. A Laborer can opted out of all those programs. So other than Federal Taxes, Laborers can take home ALL their pay check.

Dude, your channel has helped me so much. I’m a student in Florida and I obsess over this stuff. I’m a finance brain too, and I’ve eventually come around to Sacramento. I forgot that’s exactly where you are; lol, figures. A couple hours from South Lake Tahoe for killer snowboarding too, no less. Now, if I can just convince myself to forego the MMJ card and pass from the BON we get in Oregon, I’m in for the extra $30k/yr before overtime take home. I moved to Northern California from NYC in 2019. It might be helpful to get your first nursing job in a specialty and get 18 months to 2 years under your belt. Once you have that options open up since some hospital systems don’t take new grads. You can apply for full time jobs or come out as a traveler to try different hospitals before deciding.

If you've seen my other videos you would not be saying this. My wife's salary increase is bringing her hourly rate up to $123/hr. Her and I are bringing home a combined income of $330,000 this year. That's with me working 20 hours per week and her working and average of 32-36 hours per week. Even after taxes, mortgage, and monthly expenses we have between $9,000 and $14,000 left over every month. There is no way we'd be able to bring home that much in any other state, working the same number of hours.

I save $4000-$4200 each month after all the expenses. Also, our nurse patient ratio in the hospital I work is 1:2 in ICU, 1:4 in stepdown and medsurg... I still think most nurses are saving almost the same amount of money wherever state they work with the same comfort/lifestyle of what we get in cheaper states versus expensive states, only difference I could think of is bigger cities are more lively..

Forget commiefornia lol. More people leave Cali for Texas than the other way around. You should see the new home construction in this state and you get more bang for your house here. My daughter graduated from nursing school in Hawaii last year, where we were stationed there for four years. I transferred my GI Bill to her and she only took a 8k loan her last semester, that I paid off for her as her graduation present. She makes in the mid 60s and I just want her to save. I am a disabled vet, so my property taxes are waived. We bring in nearly 20k a month and my monthly expenses is just 5500 a month. My mortgage with just home insurance and county tax is 2200 a month. And I have solar. :)

I thought only $12k of the whole mortgage is waived for disabled vets in texas? In cali its close to 170k or more for low income vets. I find more benefits in cali for vets. Plus all my kids get to go to school for free at any UC and Csu schools and get to pocket the VA educational benefit. Texas, from my research, didn't have any tuition waiver for vets moving into Texas. We thought about moving there however find it to.be too city for us. Texas is way too big, too much traffic, too far out to certain places, and we will be making less there so we decided to stay in our small town in cali. Btw We only paid $1700/month for our new construction home. Other factors played in our decisions why we didn't move to TX.

The 401k would because the IRS recognizes it as a reduction in your earned income for the year. However, you pay the taxes when you withdraw it in retirement. The Roth IRA, on the other hand, is just after tax money (the money you receive in your bank account from your paycheck) that you contribute. And, because it's money you've already paid taxes on, you don't have to pay taxes on the withdrawal of ir/Roth IRA investments when you reach retirement. There are also other tax benefits to the Roth IRA that would allow you to withdraw, in 5 years, the original amount you invested.

Hello, do operating room nurses and Pacu nurses get as much overtime opportunity or near as much overtime opportunity as a floor or ED nurse?

Not even close, unfortunately. But they can pick up extra shifts for straight pay up to 40 hours per week and pick up on-call shifts. I know PACU nurses that work up to 40 hours of straight pay and 24+ hours of on-call hours at 1.5x pay per week.

Although cities in Cali may enter the Top 10 and may pay higher, the cost of living and taxes there would also devour many of your income. Texas has no state tax, and with lower cost of living. :) Port Arthur is still practically the winner. :)

I am a bit confused when all vloggers making videos of RN salaries, are these stats including APRN salaries as well? Or just BSN? And what about 2 yrs diploma with RN? Do BSN RN nd diploma RN get same salaries ?

Depends where you work. Some hospitals offer a differential for having a BSN but it's not too significant that it's going to make much of a difference in your pay. And, if you work for a hospital like Kaiser, you get paid the same whether you have your ADN or BSN. I have plenty of videos going over all of this.

@@raghuveerkamalakar7836 no way. Being a nurse practitioner in the US is completely different than being a nurse practitioner in another country. You would have to go back to school here to meet all of the requirements. Either way, staff/bedside nurses in California get paid more than advance degree nurses in the entire US.

I am currently work in Los Angeles as a nurse. I work 10 hours a day, but I don't see overtime pay for 2 hours. I get paid for straight 10 hours, no overtime pay.

That's how nursing employers circumvent the laws. Employers are allowed to not pay employees time and a half if they hire them to work 12-hour shifts. You have to be hired on as an 8-hour-shift employee.

These charts dont include any overtime the nurse has done in a given month. So that means the "True Net" could be higher in CA. Wow, I wonder how often headnurses would allow the said nurse to work overtime (if the said nurse kindly ask his/her headnurse he/she is willing to do overtime). Because if she can do it weekly, then that would mean digging a gold mine.

But, don't worry, you can still easily make over $250k out here. There will always be enough OT to make that much or more per year.

Texas has a lower cost of living so you get to keep more and Texas is growing faster so real estate opportunity is better and crime rate is lower as well as law and order are better
