Thanks for sharing your amazing journey! I’m a RN Case Manager in CA and mostly working for Health Plans in various Administrative roles. UM,QM,Project Management and of course Case Management. You both are obviously both very smart people and very mindful of your finances. Honestly, I have been an RN over 25 years and so many of them are impulsive and don’t do the basics. #1 buy a home asap. #2 invest #3 save money in retirement accounts #4 find out the highest possible pay doing the type of nursing job that you enjoy. Currently I’m a contractor for Kaiser and I love it! I worked for them 10 years ago but it was a different hospital and it was just a temporary position. Anyway I’m enjoying your channel and try to follow some of your other socials. You’re the best nurses on KZbin for what I enjoy!

Buying a home asap ain’t realistic anymore
@NursesToRiches Жыл бұрын
The problem with buying a home is that many consider it an investment but often go about it the wrong way, turning it into a financial drain. Look back at how we approached purchasing our home, desperation led us to borrow $70k for the downpayment because we only managed to save $30k prior to applying for the mortgage. Let's look at some numbers: We bought our home for $697k (rounding up to $700k). For the past 7 years, we've been paying $4,100 monthly, covering our mortgage, property taxes, HOA, and homeowner's insurance. This totals $287,000 in mortgage payments and $82,880.84 in interest for the initial $70k downpayment loan. We also got some tax savings by deducting the interest and property taxes paid towards our home, averaging around $5k per year. Currently, our home is valued at approximately $900k according to Redfin, Zillow, and Realtor.com, while we still owe $584k on our mortgage. Had we continued paying $1,800 for the 3-bedroom, 2-bath apartment we had in Roseville before moving into our home, we would have had an extra $2,300 per month to invest in rental properties or low-cost index funds. Our future plan involves reinvesting in our business and allocating a significant portion of our earnings towards real estate and index fund investments over the next few years. If this means renting an apartment or home until it makes more financial sense to buy, then that's the path we're willing to take.

Hello, New sub here-I'm in school for my LPN and then going for my RN. I wanted to know, how many years would you guys recommend in experience should I get first before considering moving to CA for a couple of years? Also, I definitely agree, that there's nothing wrong with moving away from bedside-I already know down the line that I want to move away from bedside-maybe as a nurse consultant or nursing informatics

I am glad they discussed how difficult it was when they first moved to Sacramento region to find a Nursing job. It is an understatement to think someone will just arrive and be able to make this wonderful money. The area is very competitive, and it is not uncommon for new graduates in the area to struggle to even get a job. I mention this because lots of people seem to think they will show up and start making this awesome money. I am working at two facilities in the area, so it is doable, just be realistic with yourself, your finances and budgeting before just making a one-way trip. I love the area and am happy to be here, there are great areas for families if you research.

Move to a different location or work in a different hospital. Unless you're working less than 20 hours per week, there should be no reason why you're making less than 100k per year. I worked 16 hours per week and still made $115k.

I was pregnant half that year and can't just up and leave to go to NY where I knew from past experience NYC hospitals had deplorable working conditions. We also paid off 128k of debt that year as staff nurses. The goal isn't about a short stint in NY, it's to settle back there for good.
@NursesToRiches Жыл бұрын
Believe it or not, nurses we work with were making $40k to $60k per month during covid because of the abundance of overtime they were giving away. But the best part about this part of California is that we don't have to be signed on for 13-week contracts in order to earn those rates + benefits. But those perks that travel nurses got do sound pretty appealing.

YOU GUYS ARE AWESOME!!!!!! to be honest I feel mad bad when you guys say you might come back and get a nursing job......especially for benefits, because you need full time (from what I am aware) to get benefits (health insurance) and NYC conditions still suck. Maybe you guys know of another spot. BTW How did Monica feel about returning to real bedside when she went to cali? she said she was really burnt out and was nervous to return. I am in that phase. Was bedside just THAT must better with cali laws (ratios)? or did she push through it? Thank you guys!!! awesome stuff! more content like this where you guys are just talking to the camera together is just a suggestion. ❤

Hi ! Staff nurse 1 new grad here at kp , should I stay in inpatient or transfer out to outpatient??
@NursesToRiches11 ай бұрын
The great thing about Kaiser is that you can try anything out. Go to outpatient, and if you don't like it, go back to inpatient. I will say this, though: as a new grad in an outpatient setting, you will have the least amount of seniority and will have to cross your fingers every time you request a day off because it's unlikely you will get every day you want.

I’ve been following the two of you on KZbin for a while now and love your podcasts. They are very insightful and entertaining. I have wanted to move from Texas to California for many, many years but just never did it. My son move to the Sacramento area after graduating college and he loves it. After coming to visit I have now fallen in love with it as well and wanted to be closer to my son. So with that being said, I jumped at the opportunity to transfer my job to California, but it’s 2 hours away from Sacramento and more expensive where I am.(San Jose). Your podcast has also shown me that there are more avenues to nursing other than bed side at a hospital. Your podcast has opened my eyes to so much more in nursing than ever before. Many years ago, when I graduated from high school and went off to college, my major was nursing. But it became very clear to me that this was something I did not want to do! But I always think back and wish I did complete college. But I am close to 60 years old now and I don’t know if this is something I should still look into. I am taking into consideration the money that nurses make now and where I could specialize in, since I can work another ten years.
