As an atheist, I approve of this message. Not to God per se, (no offense, I don't think that God is a bad thing I just think God does not exist) but sacrifice to others is what makes humans human, it's what defines us as a species and lifts us above animals and the law of nature. Altruism is it a uniquely human quality. Whenever you hear a guy interviewed why he ran into a burning building to save someone he always says the same thing "because I couldn't bear to stand by and watch them burn". That is the best of being a human being. I have heard people who have been seriously injured pulling other people out of burning cars and their motivation is simple: The pain of watching others suffer and die was greater than the pain they suffered in saving them. In a way the word "God" it's what we call what is best in us.

I saw this in a theater when it came out. The final double knockdown caused the wildest audience reaction I ever saw. Everyone was screaming for Rocky to get up. It seemed everyone forgot it was a movie. It was impossible to hear what was happening on screen. It was the kind of experience that streaming can't match.

Funny thing: that was Stallone taking license with the rules of boxing. In the real world, Rocky fell as a result of a slip not because one of Apollo's punches put him there. So he could have just laid down and not have to worry about beating the count. However, if Apollo got up and Rocky didn't, the ref could have awarded a TKO to Apollo.
@track16ofthechronic212 жыл бұрын
You are the first commenter of this film who got that this film would be even greater if it showed more of Apollo's story. This man was ridiculed, called an Uncle Tom, and worse, by people writing him hate mail, a traitor to his race! My goodness. Apollo is a man in crisis here. He is in his HOUR OF DOUBT. There's a lot to mine there, and the film chose not to use it. It's still a surprisingly good sequel, and not just a cash grab. The first film is something we might never see again. An underdog actor, playing an underdog down and outer and rising to the top of the world. Cinderella with boxing gloves. Love your reactions!

Aw man, Rocky's attitude is such a vibe. Even through all the movies he's naive but always has some wisdom.

The story of how Rocky came to be is just as interesting as the film itself, with Stallone betting on himself while being virtually unknown, and winning.

Well, if muhammad ali and george foreman had a rematch after the 'rumble in the jungle' like they were supposed to, then ali wouldn't have fought chuck wepnar and sylvester stallone wouldn't have been ringside and come up with the idea for Rocky
@freestrike20002 жыл бұрын
Answering some of your questions. Stallone did NOT plan a Rocky 2 when he was making 1. He, like everyone else was shocked that the movie was a blockbuster. The studio didn't want him to star in it because he was an unknown, but he wouldn't sell them the script unless he got to star. They offered him a fortune for the script but when he insisted that he star in it, they only paid him the minimum for the script and he was paid scale to act in it (he did also get a percentage of the profits which ended up being much more than he was ever offered for the script). The film was given a low budget of just 1 million and not one penny more, which is why the first one looks like a "documentary". Even after it was completed, they had so little faith in the film the studio nearly released it as a movie of the week on television. Stallone didn't have much more faith. He expected the film to make a few bucks and give him some exposure. Amazingly the film was the number 2 movie of 1976 and won the acadamy award for best picture. However, Stallone DID plan on a Rocky 3 while making Rocky 2 and that was supposed to be the last one. And as to why Creed in so furious in the beginning. It's because before fighting Rocky no other fighter had made it past the 12th round with him. And then this loser comes along and goes the distance with him. Apollo's biggest weakness was his ego. He could have easily pulled an Anthony Joshua and outpointed him in a third fight but his ego would never allow that.

It's really a beautiful moment when Rocky seeks out Apollo on the hospital ward and ask him "Did you give me your best?" Without the lights, and the reporters, and the marketing, Apollo gives him an honest answer, "Yeah". And that's all Rocky needed to know and Apollo needed to say. They know who they are, what they value, and who they respect.

You're the first commenter to notice that, even though Tony was Rocky's former boss, he had a love for Rocky. One reactor said he thought Tony was trying to make some money by giving Rocky $500 for training, but I pointed out, "Did you notice Tony said that Rocky ain't never had any luck."? And in this one, you noticed how Tony just didn't like seeing Rocky doing janitorial work at the gym. Tony wasn't trying to recruit; he just didn't like seeing Rocky like that. So good point in noticing Tony! :)

18:15 The right/left handed tactic is a thing in boxing but not many can do it, one man famous for it was former undisputed middleweight champion "marvellous" Marvin Hagler, who was naturally a southpaw but could fight right handed and could switch any time he wanted, it could throw an opponent off his game very well and his impressive win/loss record speaks for itself

Sly did NOT have a part 2 in mind until Rocky was a hit in 76-77. It was a damned miracle in itself that he got to shoot the first one at all. His demands were unheard of for a bonifide nobody, which Stallone was pre- Rocky. An absolute zero with no credentials at all. Still, he got to make his movie with Universal and even got to play the lead. It was a miracle in itself that he got to shoot the first one at all under his own terms for mafor studio. His demands were unheard of for a bonifide nobody, which Stallone was pre- Rocky. An absolute zero with no credentials at all. Still, he got to make his movie and the Sylvester Stallone story in itself should be made a movie about because he beat all odds by working hard.

Creed actually was way ahead on points (punches), even though it looked dead-even toward the end. Experienced boxers/champions know how to pile up points to win decisions, which forces the challenger to go for the knockout to have any chance of winning, That's why Creed's manager kept telling him between rounds to stop pushing for a knockout or else he'd risk getting knocked out himself, as Rocky was ravaging his ribs and he could hardly breathe. Then again, another split decision for Creed without knocking out Rocky would've made him demand yet another rematch anyway.

I don't think Stallone had a sequel in mind when he wrote the first movie. He was flat broke before Rocky, so he was probably hoping just to get ONE movie made. It's was also the 70's, before it was a common practice for Hollywood to have multi-film franchise plans. It's not like today, where they have like 12 Marvel movies planned out ahead of time. There's also no rule against switching between fighting left-handed and right-handed. Though I'm sure there are ambidextrous boxers out there, I don't think it's very common for a boxer to switch like that, as boxers usually prefer to fight in the style that favors their stronger dominant hand. It's like switching which hand you write with. It's uncomfortable and the results are not as good.
