He is showing you step 1, 12 months later, the planting process, the entire process. I go through tonnes of videos which only discuss one aspect (pruning). So I am happy to subscribe to this channel.

Love this video! thank you for recording 5 years and it was so clear to see how to take care of it. I didn’t know that Pomegranate needs Chill hours.. We live in Glendale, Last year, 2020 we had over 50 fruits and juiced a lot, made some jam and it was grate. Since our tree has a big seeds, I take fruits out by tapping the skin after cutting and putting some slices into the outer shell, then put all the fruits in vitamix lightly, then filter the juice with cheese cloth catching all the seeds and other things. ) This year, I only got 9 fruits🥲… a lots of flowers fell off during the summer. This is common for us that our Tree does well only every other year. May be we need to feed the tree better…

You should mention that the tree is a bit thorny and pruning should me done with care. Other than that I would reduce watering before the ripening of the fruit to avoid cracking. In Israel where I live, as in other parts of the middle east and Africa, we have a pest called Deudorix livia- a butterfly that lays eggs in the fruit and ruins it; we need to cover the fruits with paper bags to prevent it if we don't want to spray. You guys in California are lucky.

Nancy, California doesn't have the abundance of insects like Florida, or the humid east coast, in general. I grew up in New Jersey, "the garden state". Now in sunny San Diego for over 31 years. The drier climate isn't as bug friendly as back east with the dreadful humidity.

The best way I've found to open pomegranates was actually on a box of them I got from Costco. First you score a ring about 1 inch down from the flower end of the fruit. Next, peel up the edges of the ring you just scored to take the flower end off. This will allow you to see where the membranes separate the clusters of seeds. Then just score down the sides of the pomegranate along those membranes and you can easily break apart the clusters.

In order to encourage fruit set, stop watering the pomegranate tree for a while when the flowers appear until you see small fruits being formed. If you water/overwater during the appearance of the flowers, they will just fall off.

Hi Zay, Its year five now. I transferred them from seed trays to individual small pots about four months. They are repotted once every year in slightly larger pots and prune them at the same time to reduce them getting bush like, the trunks are still just pencil thick. Growing from seeds is a very slow process and takes many years.

I have a pomegranate tree in my front yard that I grew from a seed. The parent plant was a Wonderful variety. The new plants pomegranates are nearly identical to the parent plant so we got lucky. It took the plant about 4 years to start making fruit, and 6 years to get a high yield of fruit. I've also found cross pollinating varieties gets better yields, as we planted a Wonderful variety in the yard and now when both plants flower we've gotten almost double the amount of pomegranates on the plants, then from the single one I grew from seed originally.

I have a tree, It was 6" when purchased. I reported it in a larger pot, at the bottom there's bushy stems with leaves and one stem growing now about 5'. It has small leaves but some seem to wilt and fall off of the large stem. Is that OK, or am I doing something wrong? Is to much water causing this, not enough sun. or does it need repotted again into a larger pot? Also to finalize the potting process. what actual size of a pot do I need, and would a certain pot do better than a plastic?

He didn’t say that you couldn’t grow them from seeds, he just said that he wouldn’t suggest it because you never know what kind of fruit (pomegranate)you’re going to end up with. Meaning, growers will pollinate different varieties together to end up with a certain variety that perhaps produces larger fruit or sweeter fruit. He has the variety called Wonderful. If he were to grow fruit from that plant he would not get the same pomegranate as Wonderful

Thank you for showing the progress of your pomegranate tree over the course of time, and for explaining the pruning, fertilizing, and harvesting processes. I’ve got two Wonderful Pomegranate trees which were planted this spring into containers. I am unsure how old they were when we bought them, but based on your video, I am guessing that they are both about one year old at this point. This is my first year growing in a new climate, and my first year trying to grow my own pomegranates. The winds here blew the blossoms off before they could become fruits, but these are still beautiful trees and I am happy to have them. We will plant both of them in the ground this autumn, and use the containers for herbs I think. When is the best time to fertilize them? More than once per year, or just in the springtime? Thanks!

Thanks for a great video. I live in La Habra which is only about 20 miles from Irvine. I have 4 pomegranate trees (bushes really) in the Wonderful variety that I am growing agains a fence. I tie them to the fence in a kind of espalier treatment. The plants are about 3 years old now and this year I am getting maybe about 20 fruit from all the plants. They are still rather young. I have them behind some peach and apricot trees so while they get direct sun in midday the get partial or filtered sun in the later afternoon. I am a little concerned that they get enough sunlight but so far the fruit seem to be doing well but the ones in the sun get more red in color while those with more shade seem to be more blushed with pink and red. When I open them up the seeds are not dark red but also blushed with pink. They are amazingly SWEET and delicious.! I take out the seeds and put them in a bowl in the refrigerator and they make a sweet and juicy snack. I do have to fight the squirrels and opossum for them. I lost six last night to these little critters. They hollowed out the fruit leaving only the leathery shells behind. I am treating the plants with a natural animal repellant to ward them off. Any other advice to dealing with these critters is much appreciated.

Thank you for a comprehensive guide to growing these trees. Now I know why my 10 yr. old trees don't bear fruits in Austin, TX. Not enough chilling hours and perhaps not properly fertilized....

There are many varieties of pomegranate that does not require chill hours to set flowers/fruits. Look at varieties from South India(tropical varieties).

Could you give me some pointers on how you took care of your pomegranate tree the first year? Did you fertilize, if so when? Also did you prune your tree, if so when? Thanks!

Hi. I enjoyed this video. I live in corona California and i have a 8 year old tree. Every year it produces great fruits. But in the last two years it gets this bug late in the summer that looks like a Beatle of some sort. In the dead heat of the summer i would not be able to spray the tree with any kind of pesticide. So i spray the tree with water to shoo them away.

If it only comes out at night and has a shiny green on black to it it's a Japanese beetle. But this would work for any bug: I took the ashes from a friend's barbecue grill and scattered them on the beetles. The microscopic sharp points break their joints, they die, and the tree is fertilized. This saved my small English Morello sour cherry tree that they were decimating but didn't work at all for my pear, where it burned the leaves (but did still kill the beetles). Pomegranates, like my sour cherry, have thicker leaves than pears. You might want to experiment with just one branch first.

I also live in Atlanta, and I have 5 pomegranate trees. Two Wonderfuls, a Salavatsky, Phil’s Sweet, and a Crimson Red. The last three are Russian variety pomegranates I bought from Edible Landscaping in Virginia. Not many people know there are many varieties of pomegranates from southern Russia that are more cold hardy and produce really tasty fruit.
