"...In cities, increasing urbanization rendered the night-watch system completely useless as communities got too big. The first publicly funded, organized police force with officers on duty full-time was created in Boston in 1838. Boston was a large shipping commercial center, and businesses had been hiring people to protect their property and safeguard the transport of goods from the port of Boston to other places, says Potter. These merchants came up with a way to save money by transferring to the cost of maintaining a police force to citizens by arguing that it was for the “collective good.” *In the South, however, the economics that drove the creation of police forces were centered not on the protection of shipping interests but on the preservation of the slavery system. Some of the primary policing institutions there were the slave patrols tasked with chasing down runaways and preventing slave revolts, Potter says; the first formal slave patrol had been created in the Carolina colonies in 1704. During the Civil War, the military became the primary form of law enforcement in the South, but during Reconstruction, many local sheriffs functioned in a way analogous to the earlier slave patrols, enforcing segregation and the disenfranchisement of freed slaves...* " As usual, the truth lies somewhere in the middle. Not all police forces in America were founded due to slavery, just the ones in the south. As usual, both sides are misrepresenting the truth to further their own agendas. And its the truth, history and intellectual integrity that get caught in the cross fire.

I would be in jail I’m afraid, if I had to deal with a teacher that was indoctrinating my kids. Parents DO have a right to view EVERY piece of educational information they pump into their kids heads. I filed a legal letter with the school district prior to enrolling my kids. I wish I could remember the attorney’s name, it’s been so long. It included no sex education without me viewing the materials. Might be able to find it online. It is something all parents should file. Let’s the school know you WILL be watching, listening and protecting your kids, even if you can’t be there in person. One good thing that happened with the lockdowns and the kids out of school. My daughter saw what they were teaching them and she was appalled. So she quit her full time job got a really good part time job, and started homeschooling them. She will not be putting her kids back into a state run education system after this experience.

Yay!!! More people need to do this. I recently read an article about parents, like your daughter, who were getting together to form a kind of "pod" to be able to teach a group of kids together, and sharing the responsibility and duties among the parents. That sounds great to me and I hope the idea spreads around the country.

@@anainamerica6807 We also need to delink our property tax dollars going to schools. The people who should pay for schooling, are the people who have children in the schools. This video is so curious to me. Anyone with basic knowledge of the history of American policing knows that the first modern police organization in the southern states was the slave patrol. This system is the root of the police institution and carceral state of America. As we grow as a society, we need to identify and correct the flaws that exist in the systems created by previous generations... it should be natural. Perhaps the origin of policing is different in Australia, and this is the reason for the anchors' disbelief of the views of the California professor.

Former educator in Oregon here, now back in college to further my own education after being chased out for teaching my K-12 music students critical thinking and personal responsibility. My anecdotal take on it: Teacher's unions want teachers who teach the curriculum and ONLY the curriculum. Standardized testing is king. Students are to focus on "learning" material for each test, which means spitting out the correct fact for the multiple choice answers. No arguing a position, no taking a stance, no developing opinions or healthy disagreement. No being able to explain why you are personally offended or support Hendrix's Star Spangled-Banner, just rattle off when and where it happened and why others were so brainwashed to hate a black man playing guitar. You _love_ it, even if you don't really because you prefer chiptune Mario music you have to love it as a symbol of fighting the power and you will write so on every test... no joke. I walked into a school where everyone but the youngest was afraid to form their own ideas and could articulate why they felt a certain way, 2018-2019, and by the end of it my students felt confident enough with me that I wouldn't shame them for disliking something I liked... and they wouldn't shame me. Maybe some light teasing because music these days is awful as it always is, but we could talk about why I prefer DeadMau5 to Taylor Swift and why they prefer Katy Perry over any of my old dead composer guys. It was heartbreaking to seeing them fight the literal signs of abuse at the start if the year when I was coaxing "Do you like this song?" out of them and asking if it was the beat or lyrics or what. We're talking 15 year olds afraid to tell a near 30 something teacher if they liked Thunderstruck or Be Our Guesr or Beethoven's 5th. (And no, AC/DC's sexuality never came up. I focused on the music.) By the end of the year those same kiddos did a project on a given movement from Holst's _The Planets_, examining the myth behind their planet's name and their personal opinions on how well the music conveyed those qualities. My contract wasn't even offered for renewal because I wasn't teaching my students "correctly"... aka I was enforcing individual critical thinking, analysis and extrapolation of outside sources over anything quantifiable by Scantron sources. Teachers (like me) who develop that critical thinking and analysis are essentially chased off, not rehired, black listed, etc. We have students who question, who observe, who think for themselves and recognize when/where adults do them wrong... and the schools can't have that. So they support the cowards who only teach what the books say, even when factually wrong. They support the "teachers" who assist the memorization of dates and vocabulary and can profess whatever ideology into it on a whim and tell their students what to think. They far prefer the teachers who don't stir the pot... and our students suffer for it. The hordes of Antifa are made from said students who never learned to question and only know to follow. The teachers who remain never, and I mean never, question authority or directive or why... they just do. They don't protest when we're assigned in the book to only read specific paragraphs/scripts to ensure all students are taught the same facts; no more lesson planning, the book has you covered, isn't that so helpful? Forget Ms. Frizzle making her own lessons, "Take chances, make mistakes, get messy!" is outdated. Memorize what we tell you to think. Do what the admin says. Keep your job by not teaching, but by parroting and being a mouthpiece of approved information. It sickens me tbh, how we're neutering our children's minds from abstract thought, reasoning and conclusion. How we're prioritizing obedience over learning. How my profession is choosing our paychecks over our careers. We're not teaching if our students only know what to think. They need to know how to think for themselves, regardless of field or application. And just because I haven't challenged the big tech overlords enough: True story: I was at a grant meeting 2018 when an Indigenous woman stood up and told us all how offended she was that her children were given a creative writing assignment to imagine being a European explorer in the New World. I completely understand why one with her heritage would be offended given the history of conquistadors to the misutilization of Manifest Destiny, but I disagreed with her attacking the school for insensitivity, publicly shaming the young teacher and admin, forcing the resignation of those involved over a curricular "oversight." When I discussed with my table what other options could have been, I mentioned, "Write the assignment about being a starving orphan forced into oceanic exploration to support your family, being hoodwinked by the captain, and relating with the Natives you encountered while disobeying orders and trying to assist them... or a missionary learning how to best serve God's other flocks by learning their culture and language... or a businessman negotiating trade instead of just stealing/ransacking. OR allow the teacher to assign a follow up essay on imagining your previous assumed conquistador story but from a Native's perspective. Focus on seeing the same story through different lenses, different moralities, different cultures, and open minds to the horrors both sides experienced." I was escorted out of the room, my district uninvited from the program and I had to change schools the next year because of how I damaged relationships. (BTW, helpful hint: the best way I found to get kids invested in watching The Sound of Music? Tell them it's Nuns vs Nazis and frequently pause to discuss what's happening, why characters are doing what they are, politics, religious beliefs, etc. That way they understand why the Von Trapps are running away at the end instead of just, "lolwut the boyfriend has a gun?")
