I think they should have killed off most of the plains walkers in War of the Spark so Nicol Bolas would have gone in magic history an amazing villain but like 2 people died and now they have way to many characters. Instead he did absolutely nothing but bring down a few buildings.

What I’d like to think is that after the events of war of the spark, the energy of Bolas’s elder spell failing spread out from ravnica and to other planes. Giving more magical energy to other planes that can give sparks to those that couldn’t gain them. So if we think of it like that, planeswalkers could be popping up more often then usual. However that’s just my opinion anyway.

Calix's very being was created for one purpose. Theros, being based on belief, allowed his spark-ignition to occur, because he believed it needed to. Clothys knew about the god-walker Xenagos, so that realization may have been passed on to Calix.

I like this explanation the best.. Plus in the little short story for beyond death it states in his moment of extreme grief he had a dark thought, and Planeswalked after her. That would be the moment he put such belief power to use.

My head cannon is that Klothys used Xenagos soul to craft Calix. Xenagos died in Nyx, so his sould could have still been there for Klothys to capture ans repurpose.

Found this on the mtg wiki figured it would help a little Calix is artificially created and artificial creatures normally can't spark. Doug Beyer explained that artificial creatures like Angels and Demons which are manifestations of mana do not have the right soul/essence to hold a spark.[4] While Calix is an enchantment, per se, he is indirectly made by mortals. Mortals' belief made the gods in their image, who in turn made a creature with a very mortal-like soul. It is implied that Calix's spark ignites because his entire purpose, his existence, is dedicated to the pursuit of Elspeth and he can't fulfill that without a spark and that strong desire and belief (which is a particularly strong influence on Theros) is what helped him push further.

yeah Ami is powerful but she isn't like Calix. this is a different case. Ami is a natural born person that thanks to her magic, was able to bypass the struggle/trauma/revelation required for a spark and just unlock hers early. Calix is an entirely artificial being that just *wanted* a spark to do his job and got one out of nowhere.

I read a while back that he still has his Spark as a god, they just didn’t represent it on the card. No clue what would happen if he actually used it though. Maybe he’d leave his divine self behind trying to leave. Gideon did say that gods are tied to the fabric of a plane, but Amonkhet’s gods were able to leave... when they were undead. So who knows.

so i wanted to wait for the video to finish to see if you brushed on the subject, and you sort of did, but i feel the reason Calix worked, and by that i mean had a soul, is because of who/what it was that created him. unlike Urza whos just a planswalker, Klothys is a god, every plane is unique, with varying lore as to the creation of life, all of which could very well be true for that plane. i know that it was mortal life believing in gods that made them real, but if the mortals of Theros believed the god's had the ability to create soul's, wouldn't they just have that ability. this is a long winded way to say that i think because the creature type that made Calix was a God, they would have that ability inherent to them, planewalkers may have been treated like god's, and in many cases were more powerful then them, but this is the real deal, only a god can create life from scratch perfectly, i just feel like thats kind of their thing.

Also they should at least mention it in the lore to help explain things. Like the god of Destiny crafted a soul similar to a planeswalker that had died on Theroes long ago. Hmmm you refer to the Nyxborn as artificial and constructs, but I believe they are just another form of life coming to be as all other “regular” life forms are on Theros. Even though their way of being born is more unique. It reminds me of the short lived (unless vampiric) Aetherborn on Kaladesh, though born differently, they seem to have souls and may as well be like other forms of life like humans, dwarfs, and elves from the plane. These life forms seem far less artificial that those of phyrexia. As for being different from demons and angels, it seems harder to differentiate them. Perhaps the cycle of demons and angels dying and “resurrecting “ disrupts this planeswalker compatibility making them more artificial mana beings. Just my theory on this ^_^

I saw another comment after a TON of scrolling that voices my own thoughts on the subject of Sparks. And that is, The Elderspell. While I’m not entirely sure what all was entailed by it, Planeswalker Sparks were a major component of the spell, to the point that Bolas was making NEW walkers on Ravnica during the War of the Spark to make himself a god (or god-like as Planeswalkers were before the mending). We know that sparks were essentially torn out of mortals, and fueled the spell. It makes me wonder, after Calix, if the spell changed the Essence of the Planeswalker Spark. We had Pre-Mending Walkers, Post-Mending(modern) Walkers. The spell may be something similar to The Mending, with all the concentrated mana and sparks changing the core of the multiverse in a way thag we will now have the new “Post-War Walkers”, a new generation that will follow their predecessors in shaping the multiverse. And are possibly with fewer limitations upon them, as Nyxborn are Aether given mortal shape, but not mortal body. They are very much Walking Souls that will turn to nothing if and when they perish, after all. Anyways, that was just a theory of mine, and I’m excited for more of the Post-War Walkers to be revealed to us! Didn’t we have a set of Twins who share a spark in Eldraine, something that I haven’t heard of in recent memory. That’s likely the first example of a Post-War spark we were introduced to, and Calix is the latest.

Technically yes, the players are 'wizards' because planeswalkers are wizards. That's why every planeswalker has their own signature form of magic like Jace's mind magic, Chandra's pyromancy, and Liliana's necromancy.

For Calix’s Spark, it could be a case similar to that of the Worldsouls. Either Klothis, maybe even the Gods in general without them fully knowing, or some other factor could have been powerful enough to allow for this to happen.

Is there anything to deny this being the spark of xenagos, gideon, or another unnamed planeswalker that was in the underworld that klothys repurposed without knowing what it is?

As sad as I am to say it, I'm pretty sure since Gideon died off of Theros that his soul/spark couldn't be in the underworld. Xenagos on the other hand is entirely possible, unless becoming a god means you give up your ability to go to the underworld for some stupid divinity reason like "to be a god you must give up your mortal shell and become pure spirit" so when he died it wasn't so much that his body died but that his soul was destroyed....this was a very long winded way to say Gideon no but i agree with Xenagos

Calix is more of a corner case as opposed to throwing out the rules. In a way Calix is an amalgamation of all mortal souls as he was created by the power of mortals beliefs which created Nyx and by extension Clothys. In this way, Calix is more like if Karn than you think. While he wasn't made of a specific mortal soul he is sort of a golem made of magic rather than metal with a mortal soul forced into it

This is something I've pondered since Theros first introduced actual God cards to the game; Planeswalkers themselves were the closest thing in MTG lore to being actually omnipotent beings pre-mending. Theros itself is an utterly unique plane in the MTG world and the existence of actually omnipotent and omniscient (within their frame of being) beings does pose some interesting questions about the nature of their existence - Nyx itself is quite probably energy from the Blind Eternities and Theros is simply a world with unique qualities which allows that energy to manifest, unto actual Gods being formed of ideas and mana. Either way, if anyone can create a being capable of bending the rules of the mulitverse, would it not be a God?

They are still “born” and in Calix’s case being born fully formed adult, his destiny/fate was written/woven into Nyx/Theros as though he was always there, an aspect of the plane we are only now seeing that Klothys emerged from the underworld.

Chickeen Shaw Earlier then that tbh. The Pre Mending Spark was honestly OP. Like we are talking characters who can create planes OP. Like Serra with Serras Realm, Karn with Argentum/Mirrodin and a few others. Since the Mending, Planeswalkers are now more Mortal then Immortal then before and the Elder Spell was implied to re elevate Bolas back to his pre mending days. So it was time we got some updated spark rules, but we have retconned the rules once before and outright nerfed them once before with the Mending. Glad to see a new ‘type’ of Planeswalker, but I just wish we could undo the mending sometimes.

Well, Bolas and Ugin are "old" walkers, planeswalkers from before the Time Spiral event. The only new rules that apply to them is how powerful the spark makes them. But still, all three have mortal souls any ways, even if the dragons cheated their mortality.

Ob nixilis's spark was only suppressed because when he fought Nahiri on zendikar eons ago she shoved a small hedron into him, suppressing his spark and his power. Later conflicts resulted in his hedron being removed, and by manipulating the hedrons during the eldrazi conflict, he channeled enough of zendikars mana into himself to forcibly reignite his spark. All that said, he was initially cursed by the chain veil long before that all happened, and it was in search of a means to break that curse, lured by the rich mana of the plane, that led him to zendikar in the first place.

Very late comment, but I built a deck with Calix recently and noticed something in his art. He has one of those golden masks on his arm, same as character's like Daxos who died on theros and came back to life. I think Daxos might have a soul and thus a normal spark, resurrected and used by Klothys.

Here is what they could have done, Calix was formed from a collection of souls that gave him the abilities he needed to hunt Elspeth. One of those souls had an unawakened spark and by using it in the mix gave him the potential to planeswalker. That would make planes walkers like the highlanders, some people have the spark and it just never happens, making the activation of a spark more rare. Done.

pretty simple fix... Xenagos was a planeswalker who ascended into Nyx (ergo his spark ascended into Nyx)... They could just say because of this, the fabric of Nyx occupied by Xenagos upon his death, was imbued with his spark... so if Kloyths created Calex from Xenagos's mana, he inherited his spark.

So, I’m new to MTG. Reeled in by the Godzilla stuff what can I say. But the first stuff I looked into to get a feel for things was Eldraine. I was told it was a good jumping on point since it was a whole new plane right after some other big lore event (WOTS). I instantly grafted onto the Planeswalkers and felt some endearment towards Oko and the Twins. But. That trailer. That dang trailer, man. If Calix means the Gingerbreadwoman can be a planeswalker in some iteration in the future, I am all for it. Lore is important, but I could see a mass death of Planeswalkers causing some shift in the multiverse. And that shift might allow for sparks to form in those once not thought possible.

What if the magic put into Calix made it possible for a spark to be created? I mean, he seems pretty tailor made to the task of brining in Elspeth. Elspeth is a Planeswalker. It stands to reason that we may not know just how powerful destiny magic really is. Perhaps he was given a mortal soul unknowingly. That being the only way a being like Elspeth could possibly be brought back, it was part of his creation. I mean, this is a multiverse where some people can SHARE a spark merely by virtue of being twins. That's pretty awkward too.

Looking at this with a Greek mythology point of view it can make sense. Greek gods can create mortals with mortal souls. Prometheus shaped man out of mud, and Athena breathed life into his clay figure. So you could look to it as that. When Klothys created Calix she did so in a way that imbued him with a soul and therefore can gain a spark.

Id point out that davriel is a person with a dead worlds avatar inside him that gives him his power to planeswalk i believe theres also a twin who killed her otherside to complete the bog avatar from innistrad then planesd away so maybe avatars can and calix will be reconned as a avatar planeswalker maybe thatd cover the nyx creation.

I think demon lore could perhaps be used to help this all make sense. It is going to probably require another ret-con... Or someone with more knowledge than me about MTG lore. But since Demons, and Eldrazi too, are able to not planeswalk but move between planes perhaps the line there could be blurred more and the way in which that travel is achieved could be more closely related to planeswalking.

Do we have any idea when in the timeline Theros Beyond takes place? Like is this before, during, or after War of the Spark. Mainly asking because the most we saw of Gideon/Kytheon was Taranika’s flavor text referencing him, and I honestly expected him to at least appear on a saga.

Calixs spark ignited because he was created to guide fate ergo keep elspeth from leaving the underworld he failed at that which basically broke him proving that his entire existence was useless because he couldn't chase her but now his spark then ignites where the trauma met devotion

There is nothing in magic that says nyxborn do not have mortal souls. On Theros, being nyxborn isn't artificial, it's a natural form of birth unique to the plane. Also don't forget Memnarch built a spark transferring machine so obviously sparks can move.

I thought the planeswalkers of mirrodin were also artificial. I may be wrong because it's been a while since I've even read the lore, but I'm pretty sure Memnarch gave the plane life to farm for a planeswalker spark to put into himself to spite Karn.

My head cannon is that Klothys used Xenagos soul to craft Calix. Xenagos died in Nyx, so his sould could have still been there for Klothys to capture ans repurpose.

Personally I think that there is no discernible restriction on who or even what can be a Planeswalker, only that the powers that be beyond the blind eternities acknowledge their existence. If anything, BECOMING a Planeswalker might have a greater effect on somebody than the event which ignited their spark. As I suspect the case may be for Calix. As a Nyxborne manifested directly by a goddess, you would think that Calix would be merely a construct, a pawn, without soul or will of their own and only the simulation of such to better aid their purpose. But by igniting his spark at the existential crisis he had confronting Elspeth, we might see him struggle with newfound independence and soul granted by his spark. I think a heel face turn is in the works for Calix.

The wrong god was chosen to do this in my opinion. Klohtys should have asked Kruphix to create her new champion since the latter god instantly learns everything that anyone who steps into the plane knows. The only thin excuse that I can see happening is since she and Xenagos share the same colors, she used his Spark to form Calix.
