You could watch a live stream from six months ago, and it would be hard to tell the difference. It feels like they’re following a checklist: 1. Hate on Disney. 2. Bash the MCU. 3. Rant about Hollywood being woke. 4. Mention Gina Carano. 5. Mock [insert name here]. The thing is, Gary at Nerdrotic didn’t always seem so creatively bankrupt. I've long said that network television prepared the way for the birth of KZbin when they got the public accustomed to the late 90s/early 2000s reality TV craze. KZbin has always just been the world's largest reality TV show. It's the reason no matter how hard they try to make scripted stuff it fails. Nobody was ever here for that. They wanted infinite reality TV content the networks had taught them to crave.

Now on Tiktok there were some influencers talking about how they were receiving political ad money that they weren't supposed to disclose. Just work the message they were supposed to promote into what they were saying. Given how important the algorithm is there is the question of who games it and how. I could propose many hypotheticals on such, from personal contacts to online networks designed to artificially offer engagement and other algorithm boosts. I've seen an occasional video on how to maximize exposure with the algorithm that are pretty old by now, but I've heard that if you have links to other KZbin content in your description that's very good. If you have links to anything off KZbin you get torqued by the algorithm. The one video recommended running a main channel that then linked to a secondary channel that had all the stuff that was off-channel promotion so the main gets the boost, the secondary isn't meant to have the reach. You could even cut in videos and outro that showed stuff from the secondary as long as the main channel doesn't provide off site links.

As Ellison stated in his books "The Glass Teat" and "The Other Glass Teat" television doesn't suck, it is sucked. One could go further with the internet and its nascent and existing media outlets, like KZbin. Many of the creators themselves suck, as they did in the old days of the cathode ray tube. Theft in the industry (and Paul is obviously aware of this) is endemic. For every original thought or idea, there'll be 99 steals. The problem with subscription cable TV (at least in Australia) is that when it first started in the 1990's, there was no advertising, so you would gladly pay your subscription and be able to watch your various shows, documentaries, movies, etc knowing you wouldn't see any advertising breaks. As the years went buy, it seemed that slowly but surely, advertising crept in. Nowadays we watch cable TV with the same advertising breaks with half a dozen or so commercials. I dislike reactions, and have YT block all such creators that end up suggested to me....and yet. Last night, in a fit of 2am boredom, I watched 4 hours straight, probably 50+ videos, of people reacting to "Still Here" from LoL/Riot Games. Started with the actual for real video.... then rather than listening to it on repeat, figured I'd get some "professional" takes on it - "film" makers, effects artists, music/voice pros, and other related industry folks - to see if I could figure out why I love it so much. It didn't help at all. So that experiment turned into just watching other people reacting to it, so I could see if I could figure out why they liked it (? I think). After a few videos it was clear they just enjoyed pointing out things they recognized (often incorrectly), and only 2 of the dozens of videos even commented on how amazing the song was (which caused me to question my taste, but nah - f*ck that, I LOVE it~!) Not doing that again. Don't need confirmation bias, I've got my own self-importance. *Edit* Now that it's morning...omg I have so many creators to block from my YT feed now....so much regret. F-ing YT >< *Further Edit* For anyone that actually wants to know why the video is great, Necrit is the guy you're looking for. It's telling a story, you probably just don't know what it is, or if you are also a fan, all the minutia that makes it amazing. As for the song... it's just great - and the video was made to fit it, rather than the other way around. That said, I think what makes YT great and terrible - or at least superior (?) to TV, is that if you want it...there are rabbit holes to go down. You can't get that elsewhere.

Yeah I tend to try and avoid all the YT scandal stuff. I usually watch Reactors reacting to movies or shows these days. I find those quite entertaining. I can gladly say that in my many years of watching YT, I've only EVER seen one or two Mr Beast videos, and never heard if SniperWolf until you said her name. Super glad I've never watched ANY of her stuff. Just another feather in the cap, as far as I'm concerned :)

I miss the good old days when you were chased by a crackhead on the street or that time you went out riding your bike 🚴… then you sold out and started hanging out with impious people obsessed with diabolical companies like Disney. I miss trve Chato.

My rule for reaction content is if the reactor has something interesting to say. I'm a fan of MxR plays (rip their YT) and the main attraction is their personalities and interactions with each other around the content their reacting to. This type of transformative work is the type of reaction content that i find acceptable.

Any "react" channels is sort of self reflecting. Where YT is really shining over Networks is in News for some "unknown" reasons.

My theory is that people are looking for collective experiences and now that regular TV is dead, we need something else. The news has filled that void a little, but it's too serious to provide escapism. So, we turn to KZbin drama.

Yo, I remember 'The Guild' that was great webisode series. Don't think it holds up now, but when I was in high school, I really liked it. They even had a decent song, nothing groundbreaking, but catchy.

As a former network executive, you definitely hold television in high regard. I don't see half hour-hour long fictional tv shows as anything sacred. To me it's always been a cheaper, lower level imitation of film. I fucking hate being advertised to, it drives me nuts, so cable tv with commercials is about the last thing I care about. If I find a TV show I like, I'll buy it on dvd. I can't watch cable with ads on a daily basis. I know that I'm in the minority, most people seem to LOVE numbing out to endless reruns of Law and order, i can't stand that stuff. That probably sounded harsh, there are some great shows that I like. But the cable tv format with commercials is God awful. I'd rather watch a 30 minute video about a real life scam than a rerun of the damn big bang theory, and I'm obviously not the only one.

Back in the day YT had a reply to video feature where videos literally had a button to allow you to post reply videos. That's where the KZbin commentary community got its archaic start in the long long ago

Well said! The repetition and constant commentating on the one or two big stories does remind me of when my college roommate would leave ESPN on all day and each new show (on the hour or half our) would talk about the same 3-5 big news stories in sports from the day before with commentary and reactions... But now on YT, the commentary and reactions aren't limited to one or two 24 hour channels, its any channel at any time. I guess in the YT News cycle, being first isnt necessary because more drama get stirred up to react to... etc. So in some ways, weve been trained by (and even conditioned to believe), as you said, the reality TV, and cable commentary reactions are a standard model of entertainment. And it truly is fascinating the quality of production we not only expect, but reward with views, depending on the platform and style of content.

The thing i most dislike about youtube is personality channels, these channels that seem to have an incredible amount of subscribers based solely on the youtubers personality which is generally loud and obnoxious and over the top etc... the kind of people i hastily avoid in real life. and yes i personally pretty much abandoned the Networks because they were creating more and more and more and more reality shows which i detest and which by default means less and less and less actual TV shows. and yes to me these kind of youtubers are absolutely the equivalent of reality tv and i will never know why do many people like that kind of thing and follow them. all that said i have been getting pretty tired of seeing a bunch of the youtubers that i do watch ALL just doing reviews on the same bad TV shows and films which i had zero interest in in the first place, and it honestly irritates me that people, these reviewers included are hate watching these awful shows. every click on these shows just ads to their viewer count and enables them to continue on with this trash. i knew and swore i would never support Marvel and Disney the second all of the Netflix Marvel shows were suddenly cancelled. and i have never watched a single second of a Disney plus show. my job actually gives free membership to Paramount Plus, and i have never taken them up because i want nothing to do with the channel that did this to Star Trek. there is nothing to watch any more on the networks, and even most of what i see on Netflix is ruined for me in some way or another because of woke stuff and most often because of diversity where it makes absolutely no sense. any shows involved at all with the BBC are really pushing diversity in period set places. so all of this means i spend more and more time here on youtube rather than watching TV, but it is quite difficult to find content on here as well that is doing or saying anything interesting. and there is not enough Time Team to keep me busy.

The Maker content seems to have a pretty good content cycle where someone makes sometime really cool or interesting and then KZbinrs that are experts in that category of thing post a response for the original maker. Prime example is makers creating new locks they think are unpickable and sending their creations to the LockPickingLawyer. The content creates content that is original but also a collaboration.

Well I work in construction. I get along with the people I work with well enough, but we aren't friends. We don't share interests. I enjoy my video games, like many people enjoy sports. It doesn't require me to get out into the real world, really... so I admit the draw back is a missed opportunity for in person interaction. But considering my experience at work, and often at Chruch, where I am there to worship, rather than socialize, in person interactions are often awkward or boring. But when I tune into KZbin, even that is often functional, to learn something about what is going on in the world, or have a laugh with like-minded people. I'm not going to pretend that I am not part of the problem as I find myself, often, boring. But life being what it is, I think many of us are just making due with what is available.
