I personally feel like the old call of chulthu dark corners of the earth is superior in terms of story to these two. Same with Sherlock Holmes in the call of chulthu ( which was made by the same company as the sinking city) I do love these games though i feel story of the new call of chulthu somewhat falls flat at some point . It's also important to recognise that the sinking city is a combination of many lovecraftian stories while coc is centered around a specific one
@elifriedman8812 Жыл бұрын
A few things worth noting: 1) The protagonist Edward Pierce is a WWI veteran who served in a campaign where most of his teammates were killed and so certain experiences he has or may have during the game seem to basically be "triggers" for his trauma which chip away at his sanity. 2) Sarah likely gave away the Shambler painting to the Sanders because Charles forced her to after she summoned it in a ritual in her office and Charles had to rush in to save her 3) It's clear that it was Charles Hawkins who was hiding out in Warehouse 36 after he was severely burned by the lamp Sarah smashed on his face during their fight. Due to him and the other cult members consuming Leviathan's flesh, they had regenerative properties but his severe injuries and loss of tissue resulted in him regenerating with cephalopod tissue from Leviathan (it's clear that he was like this before breaking into the bookstore to get the Necronomicon). He probably saw his disfigured reflection and was repulsed which caused him to smash the mirror 4) Charles' motives are likely selfish, not just protective of Sarah. He'd been traveling the world searching for powerful items and met her on his travels before they married. She was already having visions and making paintings of them. It was clear that the cult regarded her as an "oracle" and she could "communicate" with Cthulhu/Leviathan through visions and according to visions of the past that Leviathan shows Edward, Sarah was already in the cult and had advised them that they needed a "Truth-Seeker" who would be called to the island and who she needed to connect and work with in order to awaken Cthulhu. Charles assumed this would be him because he'd poured his entire fortune into serving the cause of the cult but got mad and jealous when she painted a vision of Edward and Charles realized he hadn't been chosen. This initiated their fight where the room caught fire and their son died. Afterward Charles had her locked away in Riverside against the wishes of the cult and Fuller was happy to oblige since the institute was funded with Charles' fortune. Charles was punishing her for not giving him what he had expected or wanted (the vision Edward has of Charles on his way to Alabaster Point confirms this) 5) A lot of people have mentioned that Silas the caretaker only appears in the beginning. I actually have a theory that he's the one who attacks Edward upstairs, snatches the painting of him, and leads him on a chase through the tunnels where Edward finds the painting on an altar and the cult member tries to kill him before they both fall and the other guy, likely Silas, seems to have died. It's mentioned that Silas regarded Charles as a son and that the cult members themselves didn't actually want Edward dead since he was chosen as their Truth-Seeker. Since Silas is shown having taken Sarah from the burning room after Charles ran out, Silas clearly knew Sarah wasn't dead and was probably in on the cover-up and serving Charles' interests over those of the cult. Plus since he could easily disappear when Edward was chasing him, he seemed to know the ins and outs of the mansion and tunnels well which makes sense if he's the caretaker.

@@nomernomznomz6015 My take wasn't totally different from his, I'd just say his examination of the game was a bit linear and didn't dive into some of the background info and hidden clues of the game. To be fair a lot of stuff in the game that I've observed is stuff that I've only encountered after several different playthroughs because I happened to look in the right place or leveled up enough on the right skill to get certain dialogue options or bits of info that I wouldn't otherwise get. The fact that it would take several playthroughs just to piece things together (since it's impossible to max out all the skills at once that are required to uncover certain bits of info), probably makes it tedious for a lot of people even if the game wouldn't take extremely long. A lot of stuff also isn't overtly stated but merely heavily implied (such as the regenerative properties of Leviathan's oil and meat), so it's easy to get confused.

Another excellent recap and analysis! There's just one thing amiss - the book is called the Necro-no-micon, while in the video you pronounce it as Necro-micon ( just missing a syllable there). I totally didn't catch on that the sleeping pills he was taking had already sucked him into this story before Sarah's father even came into his office. That's a nice touch.

Missing a few syllables in your own phonetic example there... *Nek-roe-nom-ih-con* I found it unlikely that it was never mentioned by a voice actor during gameplay. Wouldn't someone who actually played the game have been exposed to the pronunciation? 🤔 P.S. I skipped through a no commentary playthrough by SHN and, sure enough, they actually SAY the name. Specifically at 3:34:10 in their playthrough. 🤨

the names of the ships, Scylla and Charybdis, have mythological significance. in Greek mythology, the infamous voyage of Jason aboard the Argo saw him faced with an impossible choice at sea. he had to choose whether to attempt to navigate around a massive whirlpool (the Scylla) that would have smashed the ship against the rocks, or try to go around a giant sea monster (the Charybdis) that, should it spot them, would leave the ship intact but at the cost of eating some of its crew. this was the original being stuck between a rock and a hard place

Incredible recap as always my friend!! Real quick tho, not sure if you know this but Cthulhu actually isn’t the father of the star spawn, but a member of their race, that became so powerful he ascended to becoming not just a great old one but the priest of the great old ones, thats what accounts for Cthulhu being so much larger than regular star spawn. The term “great old one” is more or less a power ranking and not related to just a particular race. Anyways thought you’d like to know that little tid bit! Cheers my friend!!!❤

I finished both games in my pc back then and among the latest from one of the studios Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened I finished in my PS5, also lovecraftian, story wise it was okay, Call of Cthulhu takes the win for the story again, in terms of detective work? Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened offers a focused detective work rooted in the story while Sinking City offers detective work on so many stories therefore diluting the impact of its main story.
