The topic of Adderall in esports made headlines recently following the release of a video from LA Thieves' Cuyler "Huke" Garland bringing to light revelations about the use of the drug during his time on the Dallas Empire.
Following the confession from the 2020 CoD League champion, many others in the Call of Duty community have come out to weigh in on the issue and how it is more prevalent than one may expect, but something that few have been willing to discuss.
Despite the topic being brought under scrutiny, especially in the CoD League, Activision Blizzard has maintained a state of radio silence, refraining to comment on the matter.

Yeah, I'm with you on that. I got diagnosed last year and was put on adderall xr. Along with an adjusted schedule at me college, it turned my life around. Unfortunately, it kinda became my only support system during the pandemic, so things went south when i learned that my prescription was giving me super high blood pressure. I think it can be really useful for a lot of people, but i think there needs to be a lot more education on what the drug actually does. I have a hunch that neurotypical people who take it would probably benefit a lot from seeking therapy or something to figure out why they actually want it in the first place. The solution to adderall abuse is talking about it openly, not running away from the conversation.

And it makes it harder for us to access the drugs we need. Many years ago I found a medication that did wonders for me, but I had to be taken off it because the potential for abuse was too high with that particular drug. (As in, it would no longer be prescribed to anyone, not just me.) Since then I've tried almost every other ADHD medication under the sun, and found one that's okay, but nothing compares to the one that got taken away. Also, I wanted to teach English in Japan or Korea, but I gave up on that dream when I found out my medications were illegal (even for medical use) in those countries. I don't blame players and students for feeling pressured into taking these drugs in order to stay competitive, but it really sucks that their recreational popularity makes it that much harder for those of us with ADHD to get the meds we need, where and when we need them.

@wwanimalsavers
@wwanimalsavers 3 жыл бұрын
@@perc3136 dude, there's a shit ton of research from Harvard and st. John's, showing that adhd is infact caused by a chemical misbalance in the prefrontal cortex. Dopamine management seems to be the primary culprit. So stimulants just raise the overall baseline of Dopamine in your brain so that you are actually rewarded from doing menial tasks. Without the medication, taking a shower has just as much appeal as staring at the wall for 30 mins. It's not a perfect cure, but it can really help with executive function and allows for people with adhd to have pretty "normal" lives. In short: adhd is a chemical imbalance, not a lack of character or will power.

If you're a slow test taker it produces insane results (like taking you from Cs to As on tough STEM Midterms/Finals) so it doesn't shock me in the slightest that most esports players take it right before matches. However if they're forced into using it daily or even just bi-weekly that's really bad as there are serious health consequences for that if you don't actually have ADHD.

Adderall is not only used by people with ADHD. I have narcolepsy, I do not personally take Adderall, I take methylphenidate which is very similar in effects, just different method to get that effect, one pushes more signals while one blocks the reuptake of signals which gives the same effect, a very stimulates CSN.

Urmmm, adhd meds don't just magically give you knowledge it doesnt work like that, it improves concentration thats about it. The effects for esports are slightly improved reaction times (which makes a big difference especially in fps) and the increased focus, imo makes a HUGE difference in esports if someone doesnt have adhd its cheating but irl its not going to turn you into a genius magically.

@@ceefarbs560 You clearly didn't read my comment, I specifically mentioned for slow test takers and for them YES it DOES work like that it helps you hyper focus on each problem as well as work through problems faster. It can make a massive difference. There's a reason it's a big meme that you get a lot of shit done on Adderall, because you truly do fire on all cylinders faster. Although obviously if you didn't study for a test you're going to fail either way because it's not going to make up for a lack of knowledge, it makes up for lacking quick computational ability (with practice you can improve that on your own for example doing math problems over and over but for some people it's really hard to raise it like you can be smart but also unfortunately be slow to work through your thoughts)

It literally does, it only seems like its not the case Example: If you give a thirsty person and a normal person a glas of water, they will behave differntly after drinking, but the water still has the same effect on both With adderall its the same, Adhd patients just feel a bigger difference because they have more trouble focusing without it
@ece-hr5fg

@@otozinclus3593 dude, you literally can't compare a thirsty person to someone with adhd. being thirsty is a temporary state of being. having adhd is literally having a different brain chemistry than the norm. obviously a drug meant to help someone with that brain chemistry is going to affect them differently than someone who has a properly functioning brain, lol.
@otozinclus3593
@otozinclus3593 3 жыл бұрын
@@ece-hr5fg It was a methapher, if you know what it is, not a comparison. What I tried to say: If something has a need for something, he will react differently to it, but the actual effect o them is the same "ADHD people have different brain structures" Do you even know what ADHD does? The main difference to people with ADHD is that they produce less Dopamine, the thing that makes you feel happy Saying the whole brainstructure is different is overexaggerated to such an high extend, its just a lie ADHD makes you receive certain signals differently, but the actual brainstructure is nearly the same The reason why methylphenidate gets used for people with ADHD is becauce people with ADHD cant focus, and methylpenidate helps you to focus. People with ADHD cant focus becauce they receive less dopamine. Its like this: There are 2 kids: 1 Kid hears from his mom: Clean your room and you get a cookie the other kid hears: Clean your room Kid 1 thinks: I am motovated to clean my room.now, because I want a cookie Kid 2 thinks: Why should I clean my room? What do I get from this? Because of that they arent motivated -> they arent focused. Methylphenidate helps you to focus. It doesnt fix ADHD, nor does it has a different effect, it just helps people with something they usually struggle with Its like a robotic arm: If you give a healthy person a robot arm she will obviesly not imrove much, because she never missed a arm in the first place But if you give a person without a arm a robotic arm it will actually benefit from it, because you help the person with something she struggled with before **regardless:** The robotic arm still has for both person the exact same effect, the robotic arm works for both people the exact same. 1 just needed it more than the other one, but the effect is still the same

There's a bit of misinformation in this vid- Adderall's effects are nowhere the same between adhd people and those without it. While it does improve focus, for people with ADHD, adderall brings dopamine levels up in order to compensate for the lack of dopamine receptors that ADHD people have. The effects on a neurotypical person are a lot more concentrated, with a much larger effect. It transforms from an effective tool to managing symptoms of a neurological disorder to a stimulant that enhances performance beyond normal levels. I don't know about neurotypical people, but as someone with adhd, i don't get much of a benefit from Adderall when it comes to gaming. It helps me to do tasks that would otherwise seem impossible to start such as just simply cleaning my room- I can understand how it could help professional gamers in terms of being able to focus for large periods of time, but I'm curious as to why Adderall has become the go-to when there's other stimulants that can effect reaction times and other more impactful aspects of playing games more significantly.
@Chironex_Fleckeri
@Chironex_Fleckeri 3 жыл бұрын
No. ADHD doesn't magically make psychostimulants work differently. In fact, people with ADHD are _more_ likely to be abusing methylphenidate/d-amphetamine to get high. It has exactly the same effects, but someone without ADHD will not see the same drastic change in executive function at therapeutic doses. Many people with ADHD have underlying endocrine issues, poor diet, etc. ADHD can be secondary to hormonal problems. Fix the hormonal issues, no more ADHD.

Adderall is the go-to for many reasons - accessibility(ease of just getting their team doctor to prescribe it and acquire it), cost, and other factors. @@Chironex_Fleckeri Yes and no. One with ADHD is born with it. Signs don't normally show until the child is 8 years of age. Yes, it is a hormanol issues because most people with ADHD have high levels testosterone and low levels of estrogen. ADHD medication aids with the production of serotonin, which aids in estrogen synthesis; which every human needs a balance of. Moreover, the brain of an ADHDer is different compare to maybe a person such as yourself. The way we process information and control our emotions is because of our prefrontal cortex which, those with ADHD are smaller. Even the front part of our skulls are smaller because of our smaller pre frontal cortex. I know. Some of y'all are gonna say "it's all in your mind." It is very easy to say that when you are born with a "normal" brain with no learning disablilies because the way in which your brain processes information is much different. Yes, I agree. ADHD people are more likely to abuse any form of stimulate because it is what "get starts us." Trust me. I did everything from working out, good balanced diet, watching my macoros, saying no to junk food and other harmful drugs but papo. My brain just could not process information, Think of it as a control always having stick drift. You got the same controller but! one is always turning to the left, and that is the mind of an ADHDer. The problem is ADHD is not something that a blood test will say you have or not. Doctors will give Adderall if you show symptoms of having adhd. Some doctors require you to take a test at a facility and the test must show you have focus problems. But then again someone who does not have adhd can fake it and lie to the questions or make up stories and the doctor/psychiatrist will give it. Point is, these players received Adderall from their doctor as well. It's entirely up to the decision of the doctor to recognize if they have ADHD or not .. It's just that some doctors are more loose with the pen you could say.... or perhaps some of them are afraid that you do have ADHD and don't take medication and end up screwing ur life with bad grades and losing jobs and end up homeless or in poverty or suicidal tbh... So i don't believe you would be into the competition even if u took Adderall before... Same as the UFC and TRT usage beforehand. Just my 2cents.

Definitely something that needs fixing but how do you regulate it easily? Some people do actually use it responsibly for ADHD while some don't. I knew way too many people in high school or college whose parents would just find some doctor willing to write a prescription for vague ADHD to get the drug and for extra time on exams, now that's blatant cheating. It definitely works for focusing, thankfully I never needed it but seeing kids on it while we studied together they were absolutely locked in. They just couldn't sleep for like 48 hours.

Atomic Habits contains a story about how japenese train conductors stay focused without the use of drugs. They relied on a system where they point at things and call them out as they see them. I don't remember any specific exerpts of things they say being in the book but I always imagined this system working out as "A woman with a red coat is walking by the railroad." "An intersection sign just flashed by." "The mother's son is not in the train with her." This last one actually happened. Basically the son was a little too slow to get in the train and the doors shut, cutting them apart. Atomic Habits argues that it was because of their point and callout system that the conductors were able to catch the problem and delay the start of the train before they got further seperated. I've tried applying this technique to my own life with positive results, namely with regard to driving. Over the years I've developed a few bad habits and my alertness goes down dramatically when I am driving along a familier road. To counteract this I've started calling things out and pointing at them as I drive, allowing me to avoid speeding and to address every single road sign. In video games this takes the form of talking out loud about what is on my screen, almost like a sports caster for the blind. In Heroes of the Storm: "All right, I am walking to lane. My team is in the bottom lane, I am in the top. I don't see any enemies yet but I'm going to try hiding in this bush here to set up an ambush. If things go bad I will have my teleport ready.....oh, there's Nova." When its really late at night I can't do this sort of thing for more than a minute before forgetting to do it which is usually a good sign that I need to sleep. Anyways, if you want to concentrate more effectively in games I'd reccomend thinking out loud and to take a break if you can't remember to empoy this technique for more than a minute.

Adderall works so well for CoD because it's the absolute definition of a twitch shooter; super fast time-to-kill requires you to always react quicker to the other person, and super lightning-fast movement mechanics requires you to have immense focus. It's a flaw and problem with the game's core design, not the people or the drug.

If you're not good, you won't be able to play at those levels even with Adderall, but with an even level of skill, the person using Adderall has an advantage over the person who isn't.

The first concern of an esport org should be the player's health, and after that the competitive intergrity.

Really late comment but, Yes he’s clearly doing damage control and I can safely bet Huke not taking adderall played a part in him being dropped by dallas but also The CDL has a massive issue of constantly benching players even after they’ve won a champ. As soon as a team stops being dominant or consistent they make roster changes instead of figuring out what is not working.
