He knew that it was live streaming its content back to Earth, and he wanted to send a message to them that they were dealing with a man who cared to little about his men that he had no qualms with killing them just for the sake of it. That was why he looked straight into the camera after doing it.
@what75304 жыл бұрын
@Archangel It actually makes alot of sense. He did it to say "I dont care about my men, or how many I lose on the battlefield. And therefore you have no leverage over me, you have nothing to make me surrender, and no one who'd betray me as I dont care enough about them to share any secrets that could be used against me, with them.". Its just like the Joker, how can you ever beat the Joker of he doesnt even care about his own life or the people around him? What do you have to use as leverage, or to make him feel pain or loss? Hes an unbeatable villain unless you flat out kill him specifically, and even then hes still won as THATS what hes always wanted. A version of THAT is what they tried to do with Kotch, the only issue is that they didnt go full in depth with it for Kotch and it's a pretty played out cliche when it comes to villains.
@what75304 жыл бұрын
@Archangel Well the entire SDF's motto was "death is no disgrace". So to them, it wasnt Kotch saying "fuck the SDF" it was probably more like Kotch was saying "me, nor my men fear death, and in fact we embrace it". Its a cult basically. That's why the other two soldiers didnt fire on Kotch when he killed that other soldier, because every single one of them are ready to die for their radical beliefs, that's why when Kotch dies, he looks proud of what hes accomplished, instead of scared and defeated.
@what75304 жыл бұрын
@Archangel Its like how in Harry Potter how the Death Eaters all blindly follow Voldemort, even though he kills like 3 of them IN FRONT OF EVERYBODY, one of which because he needed a new wand and just decided to test it out on one of his servants. Now yes Voldemort is powerful, but every death eater was very skilled in magic, and if they all teamed up on him, they wouldve won. But why didnt they? Why did they still blindly follow him KNOWING he didnt give a fuck about them? Because they were a cult, and the radical beliefs of a cult trumps the feelings, or attachments any of the members have, even the leaders. MOST (because some did defect) of them were willing to die, or be bitched around and even sacrificed by Voldemort if it meant making sure the pure bloods won. That's basically the SDF here in this game.
@what75304 жыл бұрын
@Archangel Basically the moral of the story here is that cults....are just fucking stupid lol. They make no sense in their beliefs. Every cult has always had a lack of logic in what they believed in. Every religious cult, anti religious cult, fascist cult, race-based cult, etc. ALL did stupid shit for the sake of their "belifs"

tbh from the trailers already I knew he wasnt going to be a promising villain...Kit haringtons acting in this game was C-grade. 2:33 for example...they shouldve chosen someone with more mo-cap experience rather than 'star power'. Anyway, outside of game of thrones, he sucks as an actor anyway. The rest of the games cast though are great, its just Jon Snow that has cringe worthy acting.

***** Probably. But if you watch the other movies hes starred in (not GoT) hes just a very underbearimg, non-threatening person. hes short, and suits heroic roles more than a villain. Irons, Makarov, and Menendez were great villains. Zakhaev from Cod4 too.

Money definitely isnt an issue with COD...they pull in the biggest numbers every year so I assume they have a limitless budget. Its more so the fact that kit harington had to film GOT at the time he was filming mo cap for COD too so there were time constraints. Thats why they shouldve just gotten a real actor and not a fad, trendy actor (for now).

Having now played the campaign for myself, I think Kotch's lack of screentime actually works a lot better in context. The story feels a lot more like a realistic, gritty war story than most other CoD campaigns (ironically too, since it's also one of the most sci-fi), so it makes sense that you rarely see the enemy leader aside from as a picture on a screen. When you DO see him in person, like in that first scene, it's largely just to establish his formidable ruthlessness. Compare it to how you don't ever see Hitler in the WWII games. You're just one of many soldiers, so why would you? I think the only thing they DEFINITELY could have done better is in explaining Kotch's motivation; it is in there, but only when reading through the logs and profiles on the Captain's computer, and even then it's pretty vague. I'll keep my fingers crossed for an Infinite Warfare 2 to shed some light on the matter, because you're blatantly given the impression that the evil SDF created the evil Kotch, and not the other way around.
@TheArsenalgunner285 жыл бұрын
It’s not that he doesn’t have many scenes, it’s that there’s only one good one. That first scene is very effective because it’s not a cutscene or a video, he’s there in person. MW2 showed you everything from first person perspective which had a surprisingly good effect for the story. (It also massively helped that Hans zimmer was bossing that soundtrack) This used cutscenes and Video presentations of Kotch which was less effective imo. A man standing in front of a camera isn’t that intimidating, but a man giving you air just to question you is. Waste of casting imo because that first bit was giving me mw2 vibes. He felt to generic too ‘we will win, you are weak, you shall surrender for immediate execution’ Doesn’t convince me as a villain because he doesn’t talk like a human. If you want a mad man don’t cast Kit Harrington, he should have been a villain you understand because he has that charisma to do so (plus villains you understand are more compelling). Say you rewrite the story a little. How about, They are constructing a colony on mars and are attempting to create a new earth, by importing air, vegetation and countless other materials to create an habitable atmosphere, however in his efforts to do so and his time on Mars, he slowly builds an aggressive perception of earth, how flawed the planet’s system is and how selfish greedy humanity has become. He instead decides to gather the supplies sent from earth and uses it to build weapons and an army. And instead of a war, (which would be illogical because earth by rights should have more resources) the plot should be that he instead plans to capture all orbital stations round the planet and take it by surprise so that earth is unaware of the threat. His plan should make sense because obviously he’s plotting to control earth in order to create new order to sustain the planet. Yet from what I can tell he’s just a war general who doesn’t care about his men (which was a bit hard to bite because surely he would need men given he’s facing an entire planet and he values his Martian colony) All in all he’s not a bad character but vastly disappointing.

The new modern warfare was ok, even if it does use cut scenes, felt more refreshing than the usual

His motivation is simple, but effective in my opinion. His world is just beginning, and he wants to make the beginning of their history a glorious one. Where he, and the rest of the SDF valiantly destroy the "weak earthlings" He wants his world to be stronger than the Earth, and he chooses to find every weakness he can find in the earthlings. Such as the capacity for mercy, and caring. So he eliminates those qualities from himself. In his mind, this means he is stronger

The funny thing is how much of what Kotch said ended up applying to Reyes. "Care clouds Judgment," Reyes cared for all under his command, when Omar died, Reyes was willing to endanger himself and his fellows in a vain attempt to save him. "Death is no disgrace," Reyes willingly puts his life on the line and nearly dies several times to ensure the success of the mission and eventually died to ensure victory for his side thus ending the war.

You can deduce the reason of short screen time by the character's personality and the campaign's time span. Admiral Kotch said near the end of the game "we don't fight, we attack.", that plus the fact that the game's whole campaign is set over a time period of one day is a reason why Kit Harington didn't get much screen time. Still, outstanding performance in my opinion, Mars Aeternum.

Wow what a complete 180 from Advanced Warfare, MW1,2,3 and Black Ops 2 in terms of villain. When Irons talked to you, you felt like a part of his crew and when he made his defiant speech to the UN(even though he was basically going to take over the world) you understood where he came from. He lived in a time where governments time and time again failed the people and he believed he was the solution because of the work he and his company had done for places like Iraq and Africa. We understood but ultimately knew he had to be taken down. Menendez was a sympathetic villain, someone who lived through hell and lost the jewel of his life, the reason he got up everyday. We as the audience were able to sympathize with him but like Irons, we ultimately had to stop as he was rogue anarchist who threatened the world with his power. Makarov was enjoyable though not incredibly complex he was an evil villain necessary and his crimes against humanity enforced that. He had an ideology and he would stop at nothing to achieve it, he was able to make you tremble as you never knew where he would pop out. A traditional evil villain yes, but an enjoyable one at that. Zakhaev was a little more distant, like a dark god roaming the distance with minions raining hell upon the world, this distance gave him a dark visage that while short did make him a good villain. I'd say Call of Duty had been improving with it's villains in recent games(Did not play Ghosts or BO 3 to tell you whether or not their villains were good), but here we see a waste of an actor for a role that will go down as forgetful.

I like Kotch as a villain though they might have fleshed him out a bit more, imo. And that first cutscene with him is a bit curious to me. He casually murders one of his personnel just to make a point but then a moment later he says, “save the bullets”, I guess to be economical. The spent bullets might have cost a buck or two but I’m assuming the SDF spent quite a bit of time and money training and equipping the slain soldier. Makes zero sense.
@dark7element2 жыл бұрын
His backstory is a bit silly, too. They mention the fact that he "climbed Olympus Mons" (the mountain, not the ship) as part of the legend he's built for himself and why he commands so much respect on Mars. But in actuality, Olympus Mons would be extremely easy to reach the peak of. It's a low, flat shield volcano in less than half of earth gravity, so Kotch didn't so much "climb" the mountain as casually stroll up the side of it. Granted, reaching the top of Olympus Mons would take a long time if you started at the bottom (it's about the size of France). But, assuming you had air to breathe, long-distance hikes on Mars would be easy and relaxing due to the low gravity. 'Climbing Olympus Mons' is more like something that a middle class family and their children would do on their two-week vacation, not something for a hardass military leader to brag about. Maybe we're supposed to assume he did it with limited air supply or something...

He was super into the role and hoping for more. He was even excited to play a villain for the first time. The Dev team and writers just fucked him over. This game had a fuck ton of potential too but again, fucked because they treated it like a cod game when it should be more of a Mass Effect type game with CoD gameplay.

I respect Kotch for his military and strategy intelligence and his motives but also dislike him for how he is to people if he was more kind,supportive and more caring but not to much he would have become a very great admiral and leader in the entire solar system

I'm sorry but am I the only one who thinks Kotch is a good villain? I mean I think they nailed the heartless sociopath who doesn't show any remorse or care about anyone. Hell he doesn't care about himself as long as he defeats the UNSA and not only that but he is responsible for many of the setbacks through out the campaign like destroying Tigris and killing admiral Raines. Also, the game isn't about Kotch in the first place.
@George-Hawthorne3 жыл бұрын
Too bad he isn't a smart villain. First the attack on Geneva was well conceived but poorly executed. Though it might not have been wholly his plan so I let it slide. But then when he appears on the Olympus Mons and wiped out most of the UNSA fleet he ignores the Flagship and the ONLY carrier they have. Then came Titan, Olympus Mons literally pulls up right beside the Retribution and doesn't use it's One-Shot-Kill Cannon to destroy it. Kotch had the chance to end the war twice didn't take advantage of them.

TBH guys this game SP was literally really really good. Best yet of the COD franchise next to Black Ops 1. My god the graphics are really good too. Some of the back drops had me with my jaw open and got me killed. As far as Kit goes, I dont know much about him as I dont watch GOT but he really nailed the heartless villain, wish there was more of him though. One thing I never like however about these military shooters is the protaganist is always a overly competent perfect man which always kinda bothered me. Best character next to Kit was easily the mech guy ETHAN! Such a great personality !

It's kind of a shame. When you die, you get info about the soldiers of Mar and their beliefs. Kotch gives loads of speeches and threats. But his actual presence feel very weak, as 98% of your interactions with him are just one-way video feeds he sends you. They have the lore and character writing for a solid and interesting enemy, but we rarely actually see that in the story or in person. His introduction, while generic, did its job fine, the attack on Earth was effective, but we need to develop more of a conflict with the main villain than just video threats, if we want to connect with our character's drive for justice. It's hard to write a story like that, when he could be anywhere in space, and is usually on his ship, but then maybe make him more of a soldier, where he leads AND fights, just like you, so you'd meet in person more often. Someone who would die with his men like you, fight with them like you, would make for a less paper-thin villain, and more of a mirror of you.
