The whole 4th Reich idk was a huge missed opportunity. Imagine if once that happened, Vanguard team gets tasked w/ hunting down Nazi’s in actual countries that are known to or allegedly harbored Nazi’s after WW2 (Spain and Argentina for example). They would be performing the first unsanctioned missions into “neutral countries”, essentially becoming the first black ops unit which would tie in w/ the new story there telling in Warzone.

I'm not taking a nasty or vindictive tone, but I suspect what she meant was - there were no *female* iconic characters, and with today's obsession with ID politics, that's as good as not having any iconic characters. I 100% agree there is not a single memorable character in this series that isn’t a gruff white guy. Trying to be noncommittal though invalidates the point as it usually does. And on top of that Vanguard didn’t change this by throwing out what isn’t even their first case of “we have Sniper Wolf at home”. The fact is, almost all indie games never have these issues, it’s like the old days where you can just pick up a game regardless of cost or validity and enjoy it to your hearts content. It’s not to say all AAA developers are bad, but I wouldn’t mind some being out of business.

Well, that's not true tbh. Almost all indie games are trash, so we don't know or hear their names. As they don't have a budget for advertising, we don't play or even come across hundreds of stupid indie games. We only hear the good ones, which is pretty few compared to the whole indie sector, and that's why we think indie games are likely to be more successful about innovation in the end. But we hear almost every AAA, so... it's not accurate to criticize like that IMO.

I'm a True COD player not an Average COD player who plays Warzone and 6v6 MP. Go watch Tom Hendersons leak on Vanguard now he's completely silent about BF2042. And Didn't MW and Infinite Warfare have Cinematics like Vanguard? So Battlefield can be 100/10 on Launch because it is a Battlefield game. But COD cannot be Broken on Launch 0/100 👍👌.It's like as if Battlefield2042 not having a Campaign is a good decision.

AS-44s in Stalingrad, Volkssturmgewehrs in North Africa and the Japanese using STG-44s and MG42s? What the hell? I'm not asking for 100% documentary-esque historical accuracy, but at least give the soldiers period-accurate weapons. Even some of the cutscenes didn't make sense, why would the Americans need a Japanese plane to bomb the enemy defenses? Did the Marines somehow forget about the 20 aircraft carriers that would have been stationed off-shore?

Part of the “memorable character” thing that they missed is that for the longest time, COD was a lot like the Sherlock Holmes books, in that, the main character/protagonist is not actually the viewpoint character. Sherlock Holmes is the main character, but watson is the narrator. It’s the same here, the true main characters were the Reznovs and Prices and Gazs and whatnot, rather than the player character, and this was actually very effective, it worked with how the game operates. The only outlier here is Soap, and even then, we only know him from seeing him from an alternate view in MW3 and Price’s reaction to him. But Soap didn’t need to be the star of the show, in fact, it was perfect that he wasn’t. Once you start creating “star” playable characters in COD, the player just taps out, bc they’re not there for that. COD built its status on faceless, storyless MCs. It works.

A movie can be very cinematic while also being interactive. It can also be very linear but still fun and interactive, but a lot of teams either don’t have the time or the ability to allow you to interact with it while still showing the story and pushing you to move forward. Easier to add a waypoint and a cutscene trigger than it is to make the environment such that it leads you to where you need to go, and the events are interesting enough that you’re gonna look at and understand them without being forced into a cutscene or just have control taken away from you.

Part of the appeal of the original Call of Duty 1 & 2 is that the devs created an interactive movie out of gameplay through set pieces, AI behaviour, and environmental design. These things were carefully intertwined to produce the desired result. But that takes skill. Nowadays we get two hours of cutscenes from people who'd rather be working on a movie set.

35:10 This is exactly why in any FPS game with weapon progression (camos, attatchments, etc), you absolutely NEED to have it be a purely points-based system, with no references individual k1lls or headsh0ts. Terms like weapon exp and say "critical hit points" could stand in perfectly, and be scaled based on the game mode, even dynamically for certain seasonal events, to promote new modes, or if the devs notice they were wrong about the real pacing of certain modes (because players will definitely find out and flock to it if they find any notable discrepencies). For example, the same pub-stomping player may get 70-80 elims in a frantic 10v10 mode, where they may only get 15-20 in a plant and defuse mode (even though each individual one was far more difficult and contributed far more to the outcome of the match)... so if any challenges are requiring any specific number of anything, playing plant/defuse modes is just wasting your time if your goal is to unlock things. Vague points systems let players experience more of the game or just do the things they enjoy most, without feeling like they're missing out by not playing the fastest TTK modes.

I think she meant iconic characters, but people don't go to COD for that. There are so many incredible true stories from WW2 - I would rather play missions based upon documented real events. Let me be a machine gunner in Sgt. John Basilone's division on Guadalcanal. Let me fly Norman Jack "Dusty" Kleiss's dive bomber to hit 3 Japanese carriers at Midway. Historical re-enactment would be far more impactful than this fictional special ops squad. EDIT: Yes, I too would also like real POV characters and events from ALL combatant sides. Play as Soviet women tank commanders and Night Witches pilots, Germans crushing Operation Market Garden, Australians in New Guinea... My primary point was give me historical accuracy/authenticity. There is plenty of diverse representation to be found and highlighted from the existing history without resorting to fiction. The first examples that came to mind were just US American because of the last podcast I listened to.
