Fun facts of the actual battle for the Reichstag: The Soviets wanted it since it was the parliament building of Germany. The Germans wanted to defend it because it stood between the Soviets and the Reichs Chancellory and Hitlers Bunker. The Germans completely bricked it up so the Soviets couldn’t get in and the Germans defended it from inside and outside. The Soviets bombarded it with artillery and it didn’t collapse before their attack. The first attack by the Soviets actually failed as it was held off by the defenses (including two 88mm flank guns in front of the Reichstag, and four 128mm guns 2km away). The second attack the soviets broke through the outer defenses and their artillery broke a hole through the building allowing them to get in. The building was defended by about 550 Germans, those troops being the Kreigsmarine (Navy Soldiers), Luftwaffe Fallschirmjäger (Elite Airforce Paratroopers), Volkssturm (civilian soldiers) and as said in the mission, Hitlers personal Waffen SS Honor guard, that unit being the 1st SS Panzer Division Leibstandart SS Adolf Hitler (Known as the LSSAH), absolute fanatics. The battle was room by room, floor by floor, and the battle inside the Reichstag started on April 30th, and didn’t end with complete control by the Soviets until May 2nd. A couple hundred Germans died in the battle, couple hundred surrendered/were wounded, and part of the Waffen SS escaped the building to go on and fight another day.

Fairly certain you’re wrong about the lssah as it was French ss Charlemagne and ss nordland troops that were posted around the Reichstag the chancellory and other government areas. Yes some of the honor guard fought in these battles for the government district. But it was mostly French ss and foreign ss volunteers as they had no home to return. Being shot as collaborators or put in the Russian gulags for the Nordland ss. They basically fought to the last man as they had no alternative.
@5ve1e79 Жыл бұрын
It later took part in the invasion of France and the Low Countries were it was mainly held in reserve though it was used against the retreating British troops at Dunkirk. LSSAH was attached to XIV Armeekorps during the second and final phase of the invasion of France. Following the armistice the LSSAH was to rest and be upgraded to a brigade while training amphibious warfare for the planned invasion of Britain (Unternehmen Seelöwe). This invasion was cancelled and LSSAH was transferred to Romania for the invasion of the Balkans. It fought its way through Yugoslavia and Greeve chasing the Allied troops to Kalamata, from where they were evacuated by sea to Crete. LSSAH took part in Unternehmen Barbarossa (the invasion of the Soviet Union) attached to Heeresgruppe Süd and saw action at Kiev and Rostov. It was transferred to France for refitting 1942 and was upgraded to a Panzergrenadier-DIvision. It returned to the Eastern front 1943 and fought at Kharkov and Kursk. After the failure at Kursk, LSSAH was sent to Italy on anti-partisan duty but it soon was sent back to the Eastern front this time as a Panzer-Division. LSSAH was one of the divisions encircled near Kamenets-Podolsk and though it was saved by 9. SS-Panzer-Division Hohenstaufen and 10. SS-Panzer-Division Frundsberg it suffered heavy losses and was sent to France for rest and refitting. It fought in Normandy following the Allied invasion and saw action at Caen, Falaise and Aachen as it was pressed back towards Germany. It took part in the offensive in the Ardennes attached to I SS Panzerkorps. After the failure of that offensive LSSAH was once again sent to the Eastern front to take part in the offensive to break the siege of Budapest (Unternehmen Margarethe). Following that failed offensive it was transferred to Austria where it surrendered to the American troops at the end of the war.

The French volunteers of the Second World War constituted an entirely separate division in the Wehrmacht, and after that the Waffen-SS which consisted of units that were called the 33rd Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS Charlemagne (1st French) and the Charlemagne Regiment. With an impressive strength of an estimated 7,400-11,000 at its peak in 1944, the numbers came down to a mere sixty, as of May 1945. Entrusted with the protection of Central Berlin as well as the Führer’s bunker from the Soviet invasion, they were one of the last remaining German units to have faced combat.
@5ve1e79 Жыл бұрын
Ok after some of my own research we have to distinguish between the LSSAH combat division and the LSSAH guard. Even though the LSSAH became a division earlier in the war and subsequently surrendered later on in the war like I previously talked about. But the LSSAH did have around 800 men (guards not divisional troops) that fought in the central government area. Alongside Charlemagne and nordland. Just wanted to clear it up.

I think the soviet campaign works better becouse they worked a better connection between the game and the characters in that side of the campaign. We were just people having a great time killing npcs, just as the Soviets were enjoying their carnage fighting for revenge and bloodlust, killing the germans no matter what. The american side was portrayed as soldiers that just wanted to get done with all that and go home.

I don't know if the author of the soundtrack wanted to convey this, but there is a certain mystical and religious overtones in it. The battle in parliament turns into a battle in the cave of horror of an agonizing infernal beast, in the music you can hear its frightening cries, and the choir resembles an Orthodox choir. It seems to me that the author wanted to give the whole action the subtext of God's judgment on this invisible beast that personifies the Third Reich, or the evil soul of the Third Reich and its pagan god.

You know, even on the official website on the page about Chernov it is written that he is a newbie and did not see all the crimes of the Nazis on Soviet soil. Imagine that you are a soldier and you approach a village hoping to meet youre compatriots, but you find that all the inhabitants were burned alive in a barn. For example, Belarus was never able to populate after the war because its population decreased by a third. A lot of Belarusians and Ukrainians lost their families and houses. The only thing that made them live was the desire for revenge. Even after Stalin's order that “the Red Army is liberating, not seizing. Robbery, murder, violence against the civilian population is severely punished.” But fortunately, they destroyed the real evil.

It's funny how Japan (rightfully mind you) has the reputation for fanaticism, when you could make a strong argument Germany was just as, if not more fanatical. Japan would surrender before the home islands were attacked. Germany would fight the Red Army for every inch Berlin, house by house, room by room. They fought when they were pushed to the Reichstag plaza. They would fight room by room. Germany fought until it literally could not fight anymore. They just started throwing little kids, the elderly, the wounded, even enslaved foreign prisoners were forced to die for the Fuhrer. For a battle that was already lost.

Well, that's not exactly true. Before both the bombs and the Soviet entry in the Pacific Theatre, what the Japanese were keen on what amounted to taking as many Americans/Soviets with them and hoping there's still a country to rule over by the time they give up; otherwise known as _ichi-go_ , it involved giving schoolchildren rudimentary machine gun training and giving pretty much every civilian on the Japanese home islands a bamboo spear or gun. What threw a wrench into these plans being the aforementioned bombs and Soviet invasion, which worked to convince the Japanese government and overseas armies respectively to surrender; neither would have worked with the other missing.
